Ensign Polis stepped of the transporter pad and acknowledged the transporter operator as he headed out into the corridor. He had spent a couple of weeks travelling with different starships to get here from the USS Endeavour and he used some of that time to learn what he could about the Odin. She was an impressive ship and he looked forward to serving on her as best he could. He also made sure to know the general layout of the ship. It wouldn’t look good getting lost on the first day.
First things first, he thought. Better check in with the boss. He threw his bagback over his shoulder and headed for the office of the Chief of Security. He arrived at the door and paused. A harsh swallow, tugged down on his uniform top, checked his rank insignia (for a little encouragement) finally pressing on the comm panel. He waited to be invited in.

“Come,” Kate said sipping her coffee and closing out the screen on the PaDD she was holding. Over the past few weeks, she had gotten several new officers on the Odin. The knock at the door was probably one of them. She had been messaged a few new crew were coming aboard today. Kate was probably almost as excited to meet him or her as they were behind the door.

With the invitation, the doors slid open and Ensign Polis stepped forward. As the doors closed behind, he stood to attention, “Ensign Polis reporting Ma’am. I’ve just arrived from the Endeavour”. He remained standing to attention awaiting to see how his new boss liked to do things, formally or informal. Best to play it safe and go from there he thought.

“Is there an Admiral on deck I am not aware of,” Kate said looking to her right and then left with a small grin on her face. Not wanting to make the Ensign feel awkward, she let out a small chuckle. “Relax Polis,” she said dropping his rank to try and put the newest security officer at ease. “This is just a check-in and not an inspection. Why don’t you get something from the replicator and take a seat,” she gestured to one of the chairs across from her desk. She was not much older than the man in front of her but she had a few more years under her belt since she had graduated from the academy. The first check-in was always nerve-wracking after graduating. For four years people told you what to eat, where to go, and when to be somewhere. Ensign Polis, like all first placement, newly graduated officers, was still making the transition from that to show up, work your duty shift, and then for the next sixteen hours you could do whatever your heart desired.

“So did you get settled in okay? How was your trip here,” she asked bringing up his record and transfer orders on the screen on her desk.

“Sorry lieutenant, thank you. I think its only natural now to stand to attention in the presence of a higher rank.” He walked over to the replicator, “water, cold”. He glanced at the cup on the Lieutenant’s desk. “May I get you a refil ma’am?”
