==================================
Twelve hours later......

Kate lay in Shaun’s arms not caring if they ever reached Ireland. The small runabout the Captain had loaned them to go on their shore leave was not spacious but it was perfect for two people. “God I love auto pilot,” she said sleepily nuzzling his chest and shifting the leg across his body. Ten minutes after they entered the shuttle and set its course, she and Shaun had not left the bedroom.

The words had no sooner left her mouth before they were replaced with a steady beep…beep…beep from the cockpit indicating a message was coming through subspace. Rolling on top of him she sat up pressing his shoulders to the mattress. “Do not answer that,” she warned. “You and I both know Danny told my mother or your mother we were coming back to Earth. I don’t want to spend our vacation like we are back in middle school with comm calls under the blankets. “Let it ring,” she stated firmly looking in Shaun’s eyes.

Lt. Kate O’Neill COS

“We can’t do that.” he said as he kissed her brow. “I will answer you sit and look pretty I will be back soon. ” he said as he got up and made his way to the com desk. Hitting the button he waited to see who was trying to contact them. He looked around as he got ready to answer putting on a shirt over him to look more proper for the view screen.

Grecken, Doctor

Looking at the console of the ship, Shaun would see that the message coming in was a distress”Shaun,” A woman said

“Yes… this is Shaun, and you?” he said as he looked at her, unsure of who was calling at first, though the face began to look familiar. “Wait… Candice?” he said softly as the person came back to him in a blast. “What… what are you doing calling here?”

Grecken, Doctor

Candance’s face relaxed slightly in relief. It was the look of someone desperate but now had a glimmer of hope. The ease on her face was fleeting, however as she cast a glance behind her at the terminal before looking back at him. Leaning in she dropped her voice some. “Shaun I need your help. Persies has been quarantined. It came in a cargo pah,” she said and then was drowned out by heavy thumping on the door behind her. Candance quickly turned her head to the door and then back to the screen.

As the door broke open she spoke as quickly as she could and still be intelligible. “Shaun they are leaving us to die and let the virus burn out. They isolated us but it spreads too fast. We need your heh,” Candance tried to speak as quickly as she could before a hand reached over and ended the call.

“I will divert our heading… I will stop by Outpost 42, they are near your location to get supplies, I will stock up and be on my way.” Shaun said without a second thought. He looked back at Kate.

Persis Colony

“The door banging was a bit much,” Candance said to the man who took a seat next to her. Her face held a scowl and she crossed her arms over her chest.

“Well, you said to make sure he felt a need to show. I wasn’t sure your relationship with him was going to be enough for Grecken to drop everything and fly here based on one message. “

“Shows how little you knew of him. We did not have a relationship. He was pining over some chick the entire year he was here. Those nights he came to the pub,” Candance rolled her eyes with a hint of disgust to her voice, “he did not stop talking about he ex. That being said Shaun might have been an annoying boy scout at times but he is honorable. His Hippocratic oath would be in full swing the second I told him people were dying. Nothing would have stopped him from coming. We didn’t need the Gestapo act.” Candance brought up the monitors and looked at the perimeter of the complex. It would hold but for how long was the question.

SHUTTLE

Kate came up from behind Shaun and wrapped one arm around him giving him a bottle of Dr. Pepper. She felt the silly smile fill her face as she remembered the first time she saw him drinking one. They were still young kids then and when she asked why he was drinking that Shaun promptly replied ‘because it is what doctors drink’. From that moment forward she would never look at the carbonated beverage as anything but the go-to drink for anyone with a medical tricorder.

“So who was that,” Kate said kissing his neck. It was then she noticed he was bringing up the star charts for their parsec. “And what are you doing?”

Lt. Kate O’Neill, COS

“Someone from Persi II, they are under duress… we need to head by Outpost 42 and get medical supplies… I can’t let those people die.” he said to her, looking at her with a plea in his voice.

Grecken, Doctor

“Funny,” Kate said rolling her eyes. “Look if you don’t want to tell me about your ex-flame that’s fine. I don’t need to know.” Kate removed her hands from around his neck and took a seat in the co-pilots chair. She was more than a bit peeved. Ten seconds of silence between them and Shaun working the controls instead of bantering back changed the expression on Kate’s face. “You’re serious,” she said looking at him with a steady gaze. Shaun never lied to her nor did he avoid the really important questions. “I will go make room in the back for the supplies,” Kate said standing up feeling a bit embarrassed. The whole reason she and Shaun were out here, to begin with, was to restart and Kate was already slipping back into her self-doubt. She moved mere centimeters from the cockpit before returning back to him. Kissing him firmly, ate looked into Shaun’s eyes. “I will follow you anywhere not because I don’t trust you but because you are the only place I ever want to be.”

Lt. Kate O’Neill, COS

===========================
SABER ON ROUTE TO COLONY

Kate looked at Shaun as he fixed the approach vector to the colony. She was capable of piloting the ship but the girlfriend in her liked him flying. Partially it was the way she was raised but also it let her do the random stuff like play games and text on her personal communicator instead of making sure they did not crash. Many of her girlfriends complained that she should be more of a feminist and fly the ship while making Shaun take the co-pilot seat. Kate saw it that it was the epitome of feminism where the man did the work and she could sit back and just relax: sort of like a reverse 1950’s married couple. This trip however she was looking at him with an intense stare.

“Shaun, do all deliveries end up like that. You know without drugs and you jumping three ranks and becoming an ordained minister all in less than an hour?” Kate’s tone was playful but also had a hint of seriousness to it. “I mean how typical was that labor and delivery?” Kate had never doubted Shaun’s skill in the medical profession until the moment he uttered to Jessica Vaughn that they missed the window for drugs and that she could do it without them.

“It can, getting access to a ship like this is a perk though.” he said not knowing how to begin here.

Ending the lively debate she focused all her attention to the console running scans of the main town they were approaching. “There are life signs but they are condensed into tight groups. I have a group of about ten in the church, forty-six in the hospital, nine in the main administration annex, and about fifty scattered throughout the town and the surround three miles of the city center. Power is at a minimum. There is a distress call from the main relay beacon but its range is limited. This place is getting my spidey senses tingling Peter,” Kate said relaying far more concern in that one sentence than the actual words conveyed. Bypassing several junctions, Kate had boosted the signal enough that a strange crackling was coming through breaking up every few words.

=/\= Colony....quarrantine....Avoid.... infection…go…the hospital. I repeat, =/\= the voice said over and over in a loop. Kate listened to it several times and then gave Shaun a look.

“So we go to the hospital,” she said as he began to prep to land the shuttle. “That is my best guess but you were the one who lived here.”

Lt. Kate O’Neill COS

“Yes, but… this feels wrong.” Shaun said, this was all different. No one had come to see them, the message had seemed to be targeted to him. The beacon others could hear but there was little traffic that came past this sector. Only once a year unless they got tourists, and it wasn’t much of a tourist destination. “They were self sufficient in most things, there should be a fleet of ships here yet we come back and this is all?”

The others around the ship worked, Aedan had loaned his personal ship to this rescue, it gave them far more resources but a fleet was much better.
