Grainine stood at the bar of the tavern and watched the door as the woman next to her prattled on. It had been two weeks since she had met Shawn Grecken and thirteen days since she realized she wanted to know the handsome doctor better. Shauwn, however, seemed not in the mood to get back in the dating game. No girl wanted to be the rebound chick so Grainine was stacking the deck. She had contacted the local social director and told her about the handsome single Starfleet doctor. Bella Bucksley immediately took over. Within two hours she had found three candidates which Grainine knew would fail miserably and allow her to slide in as not the rebound chick.

Grainine Kelly cleaned a glass and watched Alice Porter sitting at the designated table. The dark haired woman was sitting very prim and proper waiting for her prospective date to arrive. A part of Grainine felt a bit bad helping fill out Bella fill out the info sheet on Shawn but not really. Allsnfaor in love and war

Shaun entered as he found the woman Grainine had described to him sitting at a table near her area. She was trying to wing him he knew but he still wasn’t certain about any of this. Still despite than uneasy feeling he was willing to give this a chance as he walked over as he took a deep breath and sat across from the woman. “You must Alice, Shaun.” he said as he smiled before sitting down across from her.

The young doctor was as handsome as Bella had promised. She was going to do everything in her power to make him feel comfortable. “Hell low,” she said in a very loud volume that seemed to cut through the room. “Yes I am Al iss,” she made sure she had full eye contact with him and spoke not only loudly but slower than normal as if she wanted him to understand every word. “Is this okay,” she said shaking his hand. “It hard when you can’t hear,” she made sure her volume continued to be louder than normal, just bordering on the ‘is this uncomfortable range’ over ambient levels yet not so loud you felt like she was a cheerleader at a football game.

“Would you like to or der,” she retracted her hand and sat in her seat. Opening the menu she looked it over deciding what to eat.

“Why are you talking that way? Are you okay? Are you having a stroke?” he asked her, worried that the first time he took a chance his date might have a serious neurological issue right off the bat. “Come here let me check you out, I need to make sure you are okay.” he said he began to loo her over. Without a tricorder he was having to to go old school though, check her pulse and eyes as he invaded her space. “Are you feeling any sharp pain?” he asked her as he looked over to Grainine. “Do you think we can get her to my hospital so I can check on her?”

“I feel fine,” she said loudly at Shaun. “I don’t think I need a once over now but that can be for dessert,” she replied again in the same loud slow tone. Grainine had said the young doctor was a bit skittish around women so to be nice and ignore anything out of the ordinary as nervous first date jitters.

She had to intervene and quickly. Grainine quickly came over and put a hand on Shaun’s arm. Whispering softly in his ear she said, “its hearing loss.” Gently nudging him back down in his seat, Grainine placed two menus on the table.

Not wanting to stress Shaun out any further, Alice simply opened the menu and pointed at a selection. Grainine did not say anything but took the response and acknowledged it with a nod and smile. Turning to Shaun she gave the guy a soft smile indicating she knew how hard he was working to make this poor girl feel relaxed.

Thirty Minutes Later

“Why the devil did you tell me she was deaf? I have never seen someone so furious.” Shaun asked as he looked at Granine from across the table. “Where did that mix up come from lass? I mean… lord she was fuming, you do know deafness can be cured in like 99% of the cases now. Finding a real genuine deaf person is like finding a real genuine person with poor eyesight, we have so much corrective measures it’s nearly impossible.”

“Deaf,” Grainine slide a shot over to him from the other side of the bar. “I did not say she was deaf.” Throwing the shot back she held up a finger indicating he needed to wait for her to reply until after she swallowed her shot.

“I said hearing loss because you were throwing out symptoms like a mad man. I am not a doctor but I thought it seemed more like hearing loss then stroke. ‘nother one,” she held the bottle at such an angle the slightest wrist flick would pour another shot into the glass.

“Hearing loss, sweetie… come on… she didn’t have that either.” Shaun said as he looked at her with a cocked smile. “You know you better be grateful I keep you around, you’re useful and cute but come on… you can do better than that.”

“Walk me home,” she finished the second shot and picked up her coat. She was thrilled the way the date ended. A couple of more bad dates and fun after dates and maybe Shaun would realize the girl serving the food was better than any girl sitting across from him

“Of course.” Shaun stood up and offered his arm for her to wrap around as he placed his hand over it as they left. “So, outside of that confusion you think she is going to call back?” Shaun asked, he didn’t really care but he felt his chances had really nose dived.
