Life has become something of a dream for Shaun since Kate has returned. They were engaged again but life had made it hard to find just how to get back to Earth. He never wanted to bring up the point they had a wedding once before why reinvent the wheel. Commodore Calin had already offered the two of them a chance to tie the knot if they had wanted.

This though had been shot down, and Shaun understood why. They had always wanted to commit their lives and souls in front of their parents and siblings and they both knew how much they would regret if they did it on the ship without them all to be around them.

Still as Shaun sat in the bed, the dim light around him as he looked over his PaDD as he worked some files before he let slumber close his eyes he couldn’t help but look over from time to time with a small smile as Katie snores loudly. She slept best with him right next to her, leaving little chance to do work from a more comfortable and practical location such as his desk or his office.

This though did give Shaun a chance to do other work, work that Katie never knew of. The truth was Katie was afraid of doctors, unless he was her doctor. She would never see the CMO or other medical staff, and even Shaun had a terrible time getting her to truly sit still for him to make certain she was okay.

This has lead to some, questionable practices that had started Shaun once a month scanning bio signs and logging them as he had begun. Ultimately this was all because he loved her, and he knew she would never want to be so regular in her check ups.

Slowly, and deliberately, Shaun put down his PaDD as he opened up the nightstand drawer ever so slowly as he took out his Medical tricorder as he opened it up as he took out the medical probe as he slowly began to scan his beautiful fiancé as he looked over the vital signs.

“Shaun,” Kate said sound asleep feeling the bed give and bend slightly with his movements. She had never had trouble sleeping until two years ago. The last good night sleep she had was the night before their wedding. Having Shaun next to her helped greatly. Reaching her arm out she flopped it over his chest settling instantly. Letting out a deep breath, Kate instantly felt relief wash over her.

As the numbers slowly began to come back Shaun felt a eyebrow raise, these numbers hadn’t matched last month as he looked over at Kate with a peculiar look as he wondered about the increased hormones and higher than normal ekg levels.

“What is going on her puppy…” he said soft and low as he began scanning once more as he changed the levels on the tricorder. It was then that his stomach dropped as the display showed back the diagnosis he had never once expected.

“No.... no no no…” he said with a feeling of dread and panic in his voice. It was clear he was worried, his eyes wide in fear as he looked over at Kate as she began to stir slightly. Quickly, Shaun closed the tricorder as shoved it back into the drawer as he hastily closed it before grabbing back the PaDD as he could tell Kate was waking.

“Love,” she said letting her eyes flutter open still blurry with sleep. She had been so exhausted lately. It was like she could not get enough hours in the night to rest.

“I… I didn’t disturb you did I?” Shaun asked in a soft neutral tone, he didn’t want to sound worried as his heart raced. He had to make certain this information was correct, he couldn’t just take the word of a tricorder, but how could he get Kate to let him do a full examination.

“What’s wrong? It is home,” she let out sleepy moan trying to arouse herself. The effort to wake up was monumental. Kate half fell back to sleep trying to wake up. Pushing up on the bed, she lift the top half of her body up so that her hair spilled over her face delicately brushing his chest. “I’m getting up. I just need a second,” she rubbed an eye with the back of her hand like she had for years. Kate was only weak and defenseless when she was waking up and without her first cup of coffee. The motion was innocent and almost childlike but one Shaun was very familiar with having seen it for years.

“No no no baby I was, I was just going to bed. You should too… we have early shifts and I…” Shaun said with a loud yawn as he put down the PaDD as he stretched out and curled up with Kate. “I want nothing more then to hold you I my arms puppy” Shaun said as he patted his chest for her to rest her head on as he slouched low to get comfortable with her, knowing he wouldn’t sleep a wink till he knew for certain if what he read was truly real.

“Good because I did not want to talk to our moms about Sunday dinner,” she curled up on his chest letting her hair spread out around him and the pillow. “They are mad because you have to work and we are the only ones not showing. I got the whole your brother is a CO and your sister is an XO but they are showing speech. You gotta do something because I am not spending the night making excuses ah gain,” she let out a contented sigh happy to be in his arms. Sunday night dinners over the holos were a bizarre ritual but one every O’Neill and Grecken observed regardless of where they were in the galaxy. They changed their duty schedules, woke up in the middle of the night, or got up two hours early just to have one meal a week with everyone together. It was a holdover from growing up where everyone came together. Few people understood it yet neither Grecken or O’Neill cared. It was about family and family was the only thing that mattered.

“Oh lord, being a CO and XO is easy, you sit around and order other people all day to do your work. Same things with Chiefs…” he said as he elbowed her playfully before leaning in to kiss the top of her head. “No us little people have to put in overtime and double shifts while you all sit in your ivory tower drinking exotic coffee’s and talking about badminton.”

Nuzzling his body it only took a second for her to find the right spot. It was just on the upper half of his pecs but not high enough to reach his chin. It was precisely a foot shorter than his height allowing her feet to touch his. It was probably more comfortable for Shaun if she rested her head higher, but this was precisely the spot her head rested when he hugged her as they stood. “I love you baby,” she said blowing him a kiss as she dozed off.

“I love you, god I do…” he said softly, his mind going back to what he knew, and the word baby making him feel a squirm as he laid eyes open and unblinking as he tried to not let himself go into a panic.

An hour later

“I’m panicking…” Shaun said in a low whisper at the computer screen as he looked at his sister Fiona as she seemed tired and weary like he was. “I mean… a dad? Me? I don’t like kids… you know I don’t like kids. You made me watch Cousin Kelly’s baby son once and I freaked out and dropped the thing when it burped on me… I don’t do kids hon… I don’t” he said in a loud muffle as he looked back worried he was going to stir Katie.

“Shaun, it’s 3 am… you have to find better times to panic… and… this is great news you love her, you two are in a better place… kids are not the end of the world,” Fiona replied in a soft tone as she tried to calm down her brother from overreacting.

“Oh you say that, but there are so many things that can go wrong with a kid… trust me I know I’m a doctor. You know how much more effort it takes to get an 8-pound bag of flesh and crap alive? I don’t want that responsibility, I couldn’t take care of a hamster when I was 9 how can I do this?”

Thirteen Hours Later

The buzz in Shaun’s quarters was loud bordering on the volume that brought security officers to your door. Anyone passing the room would pause long enough to press their ear to the door wondering what was going on behind the door. It had the murmurs of a party yet the number of different voices one heard did not match up with the known square footage of the lieutenant’s quarters. It was also four pm on a Sunday.

Kate sat picking at her food along with Shaun next to her at the table. On the table was a family-style dinner of roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, buttermilk biscuits, and green beans with bacon. The couple was not watching the holovision as was typical during dinner but a live stream of a dozen tiles all with various images reflecting back the same table, with the same meal but different faces.

“You know your problem Katie bug,” Dave O’Neill swirled a fork at the screen as he half-chewed half talked to his sister.

“Oh is that what we are doing? Pick on Kate time?” Shaun said with a giant smirk as sat back feeling a wave of relaxation, despite the shock he had to his system. He was nervous but he had time to deal. Right now he wanted to just get back to a simple luxury their families shared.

Kate rolled her eyes standing up from the table. “No, but I am sure you are going to tell me,” she quipped moving to the replicator ordering up two beers. She loved these dinners for about the first hour. The first hour was all catch up during the week between the Grecken and O’Neill clans. Since Kate could remember Sunday dinners were a family event. As her brothers and Shaun’s sisters grew up and moved out, the dinners slowly morphed into online events for those that had left the nest. Few people understood this Sunday ritual but no O’Neill or Grecken missed it.

“You lost that year dorking around on that dilapidated cruiser instead of taking the ship Dad and Mr. Conner had set up. That is why you didn’t get your promotion,” her brother summed up before letting out a sharp oww as his wife knuckle punched him in the meat of his arm. “What it’s true? Why are you hitting me,” Dave gave his wife a side glance?

“Because you are being an ah,” Kate started rolling out a snarky comment before a sharp throat clearing by her father instantly muffled her response. Slumping back in her chair Kate cracked open a beer and handed it to Shaun. “Did I ever tell you how much I love family dinners,” she mumbled to Shaun before picking up hers and snapping the top off as Dave prattled on with his lecture to her.

“You asked for this.” Shaun whispered back with a wink. Looking at the beer Shaun’s eyes grew wide as he slapped the beer from her hand. “Sorry… sorry… I uhm.” Shaun said as the bottle went across the room with a crack and shatter.

=/\=See told you not to panic. I would go by another skipper however and practice up for the future though=/\= Fiona texted to her brother under the table barely able to contain her glee thinking about how he had panicked last night. Talking under the table about the people around the table was just as common in these dinners. Being across the universe made it so much easier than across the room however to get away with it.

Shaun looked down at his device as he gave an eye roll. =/\=Panic is all I have done, this is the first time I haven’t wondered about going for a pack of smokes on Mars…=/\= Shaun said, knowing his sister would be very aware he would never do anything as silly or drastic, but that she would smirk and snort at the comment breaking her attention.

Looking back over at Kate he knew he had to say something soon but was unsure of what. “Just muscle spasm, I have been doing those workouts Chris had showed me before he left… had some… adverse effects,” Shaun said with a wide-eyed expression of pure fear on his face, knowing he wasn’t selling any of this.
