Veyn nodded and smiled widely to the miscellaneous members of the Odin’s crew that he passed on his way to sickbay. He had only delayed his appointment slightly to ensure that he had been outfitted with a communicator by operations and to obtain access to the science labs and the atrium from security. It had been difficult to resist the urge to stop the turbolift just a floor earlier so he could inspect the ship’s scientific faculties immediately. He’d do that right after this. As a reward, or sorts. At least his quarters, though quaint, were located on deck sixteen, so he’d have a miniscule commute. Veyn chuckled to himself at the thought.

For just a moment, Veyn paused to consider which of the main two sickbays he should enter for the best odds to find the Chief Medical Officer. Port or starboard? Then he shook his head and resolved that Sickbay 1 was the obvious choice.

After stepping through the doors to the main sickbay, Veyn waited patiently just inside, glancing about every once in a while to see if he could identify the CMO. Veyn didn’t interrupt any of the various doctors or nurses present, content to rock back and forth on the balls of his feet and take in his new surroundings until approached.

It was very shortly after his arrival that a Bajoran woman in the blue uniform of Medical and Science under a white coat came up to him. “Hello, Lieutenant.” and she held up a PaDD and tapped a few commands into it. “You are Lieutenant Junior Grade Veyn, yes? Recently on board and here, I would hope, for your duty physical… is that correct?”

NE Delur

Veyn inclined his head in greeting with a polite smile. “That’s right, that’s me,” he confirmed brightly. “May I ask your name? I don’t have the advantage of the ability to familiarize myself with the crew’s medical files, but I would like to start getting a few names under my belt if at all possible.” He stopped short of extending a hand, figuring that the gesture may not be appropriate in an area of the ship where sanitation was particularly important.

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

Ens. Delur smiled and said “I’m Ensign Delur, but my friends call me D.” and she held out her hand. “Im the duty nurse most days.”

Veyn gladly accepted the handshake when she initiated, his smile widening. “A pleasure, D. Hope you don’t mind my saying that I hope we don’t get too acquainted… at least not in this setting.”

She smiled at Veyn and said “Lemme go get the Doc for ya. Just a sec.” and she walked off towards the center of the Sickbay.

In the middle of the room stood a single circular office, visible from the outside through the large windows surrounding it. Inside was a desk at which sat a human-looking male. For the species, he would be considered quite handsome; with dark red hair. As D walked in and spoke, the man smiled and nodded and then stood up and followed her out and towards the waiting Science Officer.

Extending a hand, he said “Lieutenant Veyn, is it? Welcome to the Odin. I am Lieutenant Commander Siegfried Able, Chief Medical Officer. Please, follow me and we will get you done and on your way in just a few minutes… all right?” and he held an arm away from his side and indicated an empty biobed.

Abel, CMO

Veyn clasped hands with the chief medical officer with the same friendliness he had afforded D. “Thank you Commander,” Veyn said before pausing a moment. As he followed Able to the biobed, Veyn rubbed his ridged chin. “Abel… You don’t happen to be related to Professor Abel, the Starfleet Academy chair of organic chemistry, do you?” He hopped up on the biobed Abel had indicated.

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

The CMO chuckled. “No, I am afraid not. But after reading his paper in the Federation Journal of Science last month on the chemical stabilization of recombinant genetic code during stasis, I wish I was!” and he smiled as he began taking reading. “No… Professor Abel is Human. I am am Ardanan. Similar, but not the same.”

Abel watched the monitors as the readings came in. “So any changes in your medical history between your last duty station and the Odin? Illness or injury?” he asked in a friendly manner.

Abel, CMO

Veyn shook his head in response to the doctor’s question, but his distinctive Denobulan brow was furrowed as he looked down at the ground in thought. “Right, right, yes. Hmm. I seem to remember having heard the name Abel refer to an Ardanan young man before, but I can’t seem to recall in what context. Have you written papers yourself? For the Federation Journal of Science or otherwise? If so, I probably recognize you from there.” He blinked a couple times, convinced that the answer was on the tip of his tongue.

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

Abel shrugged and seemed to look at the scans more intently. “I… uh… n-no. I never had the honor of being published in the Journal.” he said somewhat nervously. “And many Ardanans have made names for themselves in various arenas. Now then… back to you, Mr. Veyn.” he said as he smiled at the Denobulan officer. “That is, after all, why we are here… no? So… any changes in your health since your last exam? Injuries, illnesses, and the like. And how are you feeling overall?”

Abel, CMO

Veyn pondered the thought for just a second more before deciding that the doctor was probably right. There would be plenty of time to get to know the Chief Medical Officer, after this eval was completed and more importantly, after Veyn had the chance to investigate the ship’s scientific equipment compliment.

The science officer returned Abel’s smile and spoke nonchalantly of his medical history. “No changes, no. Haven’t had an incident in the lab for a while actually, so no new chemical burns to report. Feeling chipper, no complaints really. Sorry if that’s awfully boring.” He grinned again, then stifled a cough. “Ah, but that reminds me. Due to the nature of my work, inevitably I’m exposed to some rather nasty aerosols… if I could be scheduled for semi-regular appointments to flush my lungs of the chemicals, that would be a helpful preventative measure.”

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

Abel looked at him with mild concern and said “Would it not be more prudent to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment when working with hazardous chemicals? I mean, there are of course ways to clear lungs in most species, but Denobulan physiology lends itself to delicate respiratory tissues, and I would prefer certainly to not risk further damage.”

Abel, CMO

Veyn chuckled and waved off the concern. “Of course Doctor, of course. But sometimes there are unavoidable hazards, ones that I may not anticipate or that are more potent than the protective gear is prepared for. I assure you, I take all the necessary precautions. Giving my lungs a good scrubbing is just an additional safeguard incase something slips by.” He shrugged. “When dealing with unidentified chemicals with undiscovered properties… there are all sorts of nasty particulates that can get gummed up in my system without my express knowledge. Best to get a second opinion from a doctor such as yourself before giving me the all-clear from worrying about damage to those delicate respiratory tissues.” Veyn chuckled. “Don’t you worry Doctor, I won’t take up too much time on your schedule.”

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

Abel smiled and said “My schedule is always open for the crew. And in a circumstance where you feel you need it, I am always happy to provide you with an objective perspective on what is going on. So please feel free to call on me anytime. My staff and I are here to help, after all.”

Abel, CMO

Veyn nodded in thanks. “Well then I will be sure to take full advantage of your services, within reason. And although I’m sure you are splendid company, I hope we will get to know each other primarily outside of the walls of sickbay.” He smiled lightly at the jest. “How am I looking, Doctor?” he said while motioning to the tricorder.

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

Abel closed down the scans and smiled and said “Perfectly fit and healthy. Medically, you are cleared for duty. And if you find yourself wanting company for a meal, feel free to let me know. I am always a fan of meal and conversation… especially with new people.”

Abel, CMO

Veyn pretended to wipe sweat from his brow, feigning relief that the scans were clear. “Glad to hear it! And oh yes, that would be lovely! If you don’t have other lunch plans at some point later this week, please do let me know. Arranging a rendezvous would be a good incentive to actually leave the lab to eat.” He chuckled, half-joking.

(Lt. J.g. Veyn, Science)

Abel smiled and said “Absolutely. I am free tomorrow, if that works for you? Say… thirteen hundred?” and he cleared the scientist for duty in the ship’s computer.

Abel, CMO

“Splendid!” Veyn exclaimed with a grin. “I will see you then, Commander.” He hopped off the biobed and stretched. “The labs are calling my name, Doctor… and since I don’t seem to be harboring any foreign pathogens, do you mind if I heed their summons?”
