Abel swirled his wine and looked at the liquid with a rueful smile. “More than you know. I am quite familiar with the responsibilities and… troubles… that come from being held responsible for one’s House. And being held responsible for that reputation… both past and going forward.” and he looked up at her. There was a sense of regret in his eyes. “You need to think long and hard about what will happen after you reckaim your name. And make sure that price is one you are willing to pay. And it will be steep, that is for certain.”

Lissi sighed as she took another handful and ate it. This time, not thinking about it, she almost looked like a comfortable Klingon.

“That’s just it. If the price is joining my House to another, I don’t think I could do it. I know none of the males in the other Houses by anything other than name.” She glanced at him a moment then back to her food. “And maybe that’s not where my interests lie anyway.” She grabbed another handful. This time truly lost in her thoughts and eating as she should. “And I won’t give up Star Fleet!” Her other hand pounded a fist on the table as her food went down her throat with a deep growl of defiance at the thought in her head.

Abel simply nodded and said “Well… then it appears that you have some soul-searching to do. And believe you me… that takes more than a few passing thoughts.”

Abel, CMO

She swallowed her mouthful, before choking on it from the growl. “That’s just it. I can’t make the decisions without knowing all the facts. Thinking of all the possibilities is just driving me nuts! But I can’t just go ask anyone. And I know the Council. I doubt they are gonna be any different now than centuries ago. It’s gonna be an ‘all or nothing’ choice, I’m guessing. And I don’t think I can do that.” She shook her head, her next words not necessarily seeming to be towards him in particular, so much as a question to the universe as a whole. “How am I supposed to save my House and still remain true to Myself?”

Abel shook just head and said “Rarely does one have all the facts when making a decision. Refusing to decide before having them is simply an excuse most people use yo avoid making hard choices.” His tone was non-judgemental; but it carried a sense of regret. “And sometimes you simply can’t make the choice you want. Sometimes we have to choose what is best or right, even if that isn’t what we want personally.” and he took a sip of wine and then said “The curse of being an adult with obligations.”

Lissi smiled. “Smart and sane. However do you manage, Abel?” She took another mouthful of the gagh and took up her wine to wash it down. She had managed to relax, and as her mind wandered, she was absently acting herself once more. “So I should make a decision and hope that all the variables add up to let it happen. And if they don’t, I just have to make sure the decision is one that’s best for my House, and not just me.” She was thinking out loud. There were others in the House she had to consider, not just herself. If it was just her it would have been an entirely different matter all together. The question was… what was in their best interest.

Tired of worrying about it at this moment, she changed the subject. “So what are you going to do about your company? Anything I can assist with or help find assistance for?” She topped off her wine and offered him the last of the bottle. She hadn’t realized how much she’d had to drink. Thankfully, she could hold it. She knew a lot of crew mates who would be crawling over the table or slipping from their clothes at this point. Not that her mind wasn’t wandering that way every time she looked at Abel, but at least she was able to control those urges.

Abel shrugged and said “The Foundation is fine. I just have to keep trying to find the right people for the various positions. People who share my vision… not who is just after a lucrative job with a fancy title.” He took the bottle and filled his glass. As he did, he glanced at Lissi and said “You are, of course, having the same troubles I would think; are you not? You are dealing with Klingon politics after all. Finding allies to look out for your interests and handle the day to day operations of your house is important. You have been addressing those needs, haven’t you?” he asked, his question being said in such a fashiopn as to ensure that she was, indeed, spending all the necessary time finding those trustworthy individuals.

Abel, CMO

Lissi nodded. “House K’Tash has been Second to House Rosh since before my grandfather. They have had our Voice in Council and have looked after the defense of my position as well. Lator has seen to every one of my ascension rites since I was a child so he could stand in witness when I came of age. And House Pretor has been running the daily House issues since I was born. So we have at least them as allies when I go back. And I have no doubt Lator has been gathering allies in the interim awaiting my return.” She sighed. “I think my biggest concern is being forced to stay longer than I desire. I know I’ll need to stay for a couple years to at least be sure it’s stable when I come back to the Fleet. But I don’t want to have to retire early because of it.”

After another sip of wine, she laughed. “And I have no doubt there will be a line of marriage suitors awaiting me as well. Other Houses vying to either topple or join me with a union. I think I’m looking forward to that least of all.” She shook her head. Wanting to change the subject, she went back to him.

“So do you have folks in mind for the positions that need filling?” She laughed a moment before taking another handful of dinner. “And if you ever want me to help out, I hope you’ll just say so.” She didn’t use the word ask because she knew it wasn’t in his nature to ask for help anymore than it was in hers.

“Well…” he said as he wiped his mouth with a napkin and pushed the plate away slightly, “… I used to allow others to select candidates and then I would interview and make a final determination. But that hasn’t exactly worked out, so now I am doing my own headhunting. I have a couple of candidates I am talking to. We’ll see how it goes.”

Able, CMO

Lissi smiled. “Well, then at least you will know who is honestly behind things and not just making sure they pass on someone else’s review.” She sighed and leaned back taking a long draw from her drink. “I wish more people had your vision, Able. The universe would be a much nicer place.” She smiled. “Though I imagine it’s a catch 22. If the universe was a nicer place, such things as you have wouldn’t be so vitally necessary.” She knew he was a kind man deep down and wished others could see it. She knew better than to draw attention to his works. But she hoped, someday, others would know just what a special person they had served with.

((apparently we lost this lol… bump 4.15.21))

Abel shrugged and said “The Universe is a nice place. It’s sentient beings that tend to throw a wrench into things.” and he smiled at her. “And without them, I wouldn’t be here, so you have to take the good with the bad, I guess.” and he took another small drink.
