There was a high priority message from Starfleet HQ

Vice Admiral Bonsall was on screen. “Captain, I hope you find your new ship satisfactory. There is a situation with the colony at Tammoron (see refernce below). There has been a dispute between the growers and the processors of their main produce: Tammoron Grain. The colony is in danger of shutting down. The colony chief has asked for aid to help settle the matter between the parties.”

Garrett leaned back in his chair and took a sip of coffee. The cup in his hand was older than he was but it was rarely, if ever, washed. After a moment, O’Connor replied.

“Things are going well Sir, thank you for asking. I don’t think you all could have found a better posting for me.” Garrett smiled slightly and nodded, clearly at the second half of the Admiral’s point. “I’ll change course and head there the minute we’re off this call Sir. Is this a shooting situation or a diplomatic one?”

“There has been reports of violence when tempers flared but nothing like an all out war. It would be primarily be diplomatic but be aware that violence may erupt,” replied the Vice Admiral.

“Understood Sir” Garrett said, already bringing up the plot on his desk unit. “Anything specific you wish for us to address or are we just a cold bucket of water on a hot situation?”

O’Connor looked square into the video pickup, his attention solidly on the Admiral.

The Vice Admiral looked a little miffed. “You’re water in a fire situation. Whether cold or otherwise, the fire needs to be quenched.” Then looking a little less stressed, he continued, “Captain, from the reports from the colony leaders, everything seemed okay until the traders informed us that shipments were being delayed. Find out what is really happening and try to get an amiable situation. The Federation has erected certain principles to keep peace within its borders. Unfortunately, enforcing the principles is another matter. Abuses can occur and once it is known, the Federation, through Starfleet, hopes to show that these principles matter. When there is a deviation from those principles, people suffer. We hope that suffering can be alleviated as much as possible within the Federation.”

“Captain, the matter should be settled amiably. If not, we would have to get the diplomatic corps and the ambassadors involved. That would then become more complicated,” the Vice Admiral concluded.
