Kate looked at the room clearing out and wondered if it was good or bad that she was held after class with the principal so to speak. Since she was not passing notes via PaDD like she had been known to do in school and at staff meetings, Kate assumed the request was about something else. She winked at Paris who slowly got up from the table looking at her with a questioning expression. It would not be the first time Kate had been called to the Captain’s office but this was the first time it had not been after some sort of decision she had made off the cuff.

“Comm me,” Paris mouthed as she followed Mason out of the room.

Paris Black Science

Kate nodded as she reached over and grabbed another cookie. While it was arrogant to rave about oneself, or so her mother always said, the cookie was insanely good. The recipe was so old no one actually remembered who it came from. The O’Neill’s just said it was Grandma’s recipe. Once Kate tried to figure out how far it went back. She only got as far as her maternal grandma from pre World War II. From that point on she just referred to it always as the Ancient O’Neill secret. Chewing it she looked at the new CO. Life would be different with Rivar but the man before her had a phenomenal reputation. He was also an O’Conner which meant his ancestry hailed from the same genealogical sector at some point as the O’Neills. As Uncle Jeb would say…that meant the man had good bones. Part of Kate was rather excited for this private sit down and couldn’t wait to see what the man had to say.

“Thank you for hanging back, I promise I won’t keep you two long.” O’Connor said with a surprisingly charming smile. He slid the folios and boxes across the table at the two officers and nodded. “These were in the Captain’s safe in my Ready Room when I arrived. It appears that in the sudden change over, a few things were missed.”

Nodding to the folios, Garrett smiled a bit wider. “Looks like you both have some new metal for your collars… congratulations Commanders.”

In the boxes were the small hollow collar insignia that, combined with their current pips… would make them both Lieutenant Commanders.

“Well done, both of you. I’m certain they are well deserved.”

O’Connor, CO

Kate sat up and looked at the box. It had been a long road to get these but well worth it. “Did you take Rivar’s word for it or read my last performance review,” Kate cracked a small joke. There was nothing bad or glaring in all of her performance reviews. Only comments that her mouth could get ahead of her common sense at times and she usually lept before she looked.

“Thank you sir and for the record…this will get you a steady stream of baked goods.” Kate gave him a lop sided grin as she pulled the box towards her examining it.

Lissi, for once, was at a loss for words and the stunned look on her face was brief, but evident before it was schooled and she reached a hand for the pip box. “Thank you, Sir. I admit this wasn’t what I had expected.” Unlike Kate, she wasn’t able to quick jibe and make jokes at moments like this. Unfortunately, she had had a sterner upbringing and moments like this were hardly a joking matter to her. Kate would probably tease her endlessly once they left the room, though.

She nodded once more and smiled. “I will do my utmost to see to it this wasn’t a bad choice, Sir.” Her fingers lifted the lid to see the shining new insignias. It wasn’t something she had been prepared for for quite a while still and it left her with few words other than her gratitude. Though a second later there was a slight upturn of her lips and she did find a comment. “Sadly, I don’t bake. But I am a pro at delivering things and taking credit.” She then glanced at Kate and winked, teasing her.

Garrett chuckled and smiled softly. “No need for retro-active bribery, with Baked goods or otherwise, ladies.” He shook his head as he continued. “I reviewed your records and to be honest, these were overdue. Your previous Skipper felt as much and apparently got the approval the day he left. I’m happy to be the one presenting them. You two earned those pips. Congratulations.”

“We are a team,” Kate winked at her. She was so happy that Lissi had been promoted. It was not that Kate didn’t work but work was very different between their chosen professions. Lissi worked non-stop so in a pinch no one was screaming where are my engines or lights in an emergency. Kate had a much easier day-to-day life until some put them on red alert and Kate had to put herself between a phaser bolt and someone else. For Kate’s part she was just happy she wasn’t getting her rank in sickbay which was often how promotions came when you were in the security field. “And she is not half bad a cooking,” Kate smiled. “Don’t let her kid you. I am not sure what Lissi can’t do.”

“So I’ve read…” O’Connor smiled. “… I don’t wish to keep you ladies from your duties but I wanted to address this straight way. You’re both dismissed. Have good day you two.” With that, O’Connor stood and tugged his tunic straight before motioning toward the door. With his charming smile, in the right light, the Odin’s new CO would look in his late 20’s or VERY early 30’s. He had a light air about him and seemed generally affable.

Lissi rolled her eyes at Kate. Leave it to the woman to make her out to be some kind of alien super human. “Thank you, Sir. I’ll be wherever I’m needed next.” She smiled and nodded to the man before heading for the door. Her hand snaked out to tug at Kate’s tunic hem to make her come along as well.
