Morganna made her way to sickbay with Etak. He was now almost three weeks old, for the most part a happy baby. He was adored by his sisters and his mother. Morganna sometimes struggled with her emotions seeing how much he looked like Rivar and how he had only been able to spend a short time with his son before he had been taken from them. Pushing those dark thoughts away, Morganna stepped into sickbay and looked around for the doctor.

Abel smiled and said “Commander… right on time. Come into my office, won’t you? We can talk there.” and he ushered mother and son inside and gestured for her to be seated. “How are you? And how is our newest shipmate?” he asked as he took a seat at his desk and pulled up the file on both. “I have some tea form Earth, if you would care for some. Darjeeling, I think it is called. A gift from a former colleague.”

Morganna smiled “Tea would be wonderful.” She said “He is doing well..eating, sleeping and pooping.” Morganna said with a tired smile as she looked down on the sleeping newborn and smoothed his unruly hair.

Abel got hot water form the replicator and the tea from a cabinet and made it while he looked at the desk interface. “Well, the scans look very good. He is doing well physically. How is his temperament? No issues with night terrors or anything of the like?” he asked as he poured the tea into cups and moved one close to Morganna.

Abel, CMO

Morganna took the cup and took a sip “No, no night terrors. As far as temperament, he’s definately much more laid back than the girls. He only fusses when he’s hungry, needs changed or is lonely..which isn’t often with his sisters.” She said hoping that he wasn’t referring to Rivar’s absence.

CNS

“Good.” the CMO said with a smile. He looked at the scans a few more times before nodding and saying “Well… everything looks fine from here.” and then he looked directly at Morganna and said “So how are you? Physically, mentally… emotionally. I cannot begin to imagine how hard the recent changes have been. How are you coping?” He kept his eyes on her and slowly took a sip of tea, his tone and look that of someone who actually cared what her answer was.

Abel, CMO

Morganna sat the cup on the desk and took a moment before answering “We’re adjusting. Mai understands that Rivar isn’t coming back. Nailah doesn’t really understand.” She said “And Etak…well he only knows my emotions.” She said “So those have to be carefully controlled around the children.” She said honestly “I miss him terribly. I want answers that no one has.” She added, swallowing back tears that threatened.

CNS

Abel looked at her with sympathy, but not pity. “I understand… I do. And I know that no matter what I say, none will bring you any sense of closure or solace. But know that you have a place to let it all out if and when you need to. You are always welcome to come in here and talk with me. I don’t have much in the way of Counseling training, but I can at least be shoulder if you need one. And I know Ensign Washington out there would ALWAYS be happy to watch the little one for you while we spoke.” and he gave her a half-smile.

Abel, CMO

Morganna smiled “Everyone is willing to watch he and the girls.” She said as Etak yawned and stretched “I may take you up on the offer to talk.” She said “It is just a lot to take in right now.” She said “I am just trying to keep a sense of routine for the girls so that they can keep moving forward.” She said “It has been hard on them as well, they miss Rivar and talk to him every night at bedtime.” She said “They probably have a better handle on this than I do.” She laughed slightly and took another sip of tea “I also have my own duties.” She said “I have found in the past that I deal with loss better when I am working.” She said

CNS

Siegfried nodded and said “That is true for many, I think. Just be careful that you are not allowing your duties to distract you from processing what you feel. I am quite sure you know that, but I am also sure you know we doctors tend to make the worst patients.” and he smiled and chuckled slightly. His eyes suddenly widened and he said “Oh my! I almost forgot!” and he stood up and went to one of the low cabinets set below the window looking out into Sickbay. He slid a door aside and retrieved a medium sized black box with a bright red bow. He turned and brought it to Morganna and said “A gift for the new arrival… with matching ones for his sisters. Please… feel free to take a look.”

Inside the elegant packaging was a bed of soft white linen in which nested three deep red spheres with black swirls. Seemingly made from some kind of glass, Abel smiled and said “These are Hortiashien Imagination Spheres. The Hortia use them to help stimulate dreams and imagination expressions in their children. Quite fascinating, really. When the sphere is picked up by a child or adolescent, it becomes active and light emits from it in random patterns. But as the holder’s imagination begins to interpret those shapes and patterns, they will coalesce into specific images and sounds. And they are hypoallergenic and almost indestructible.” and he laughed.

Abel, CMO

Morganna smile “Thank you. They will enjoy these greatly.” She said “I know, we do make the worst patients.” She said in agreement “We’ll get through.” She added “What are your impressions of the new Captain?” She asked taking another drink of the tea.

CNS

Abel shrugged and said “I haven’t dealt with him enough to form any, really. From the limited time I have spent, however, I don’t have reservations. At least… not yet. I am trying to withhold judgement until we can see how he operates. I am hoping someone in Command was thinking of the circumstances, and taking leadership style into consideration.”

Abel, CMO

Morganna smiled “One would hope that they would do that.” She said “Time will tell.” She added as she finished her tea and looked down at the baby in her arms a sad smile passed her face “I wish he could have known his dad.” She said as tears welled up in her dark eyes and she quickly brushed them aside “Did we get any additional crew with the new Captain?” She asked

CNS

CNS

Siegfried smiled. “He will know him. He will know him through you… through his sisters… and through those of us who knew both him and the boy.” he said quietly. “And as far as new crew, none that have checked in with me. But I think we have plenty of changes for the time being. Let’s see if we can’t just maintain for a little while, shall we?”

Abel, CMO
