Taking a sip of his coffee, Garrett couldn’t hide the slight smile. He was happy to know how tight the leadership staff was close and got along well. They were the heart of the crew and the Odin would reflect the personality of the people assembled in this room.

“Alright folks…” O’Connor began after another sip, tapping the touch pad in front of him and bringing up the map the Admiral had sent him.

“… our mission involves a situation at the Tammoron colony, located here (OOC: A glowing dot appeared in Grid L8), specifically a labor dispute between the growers and producers of the colony’s main export… Tammoron Grain. The colony’s director is concerned as the dispute could result in the colony shutting down, and as such he reached out to Starfleet to help calm things down between the parties in question.”

“Do note…” Garrett continued, looking at O’Neil. “… there have been reports coming out from colony leadership of violence between the groups at times but thankful nothing like all-out war… yet. Apparently, everything was rather kosher until traders began reporting that shipments were being delayed. Command wants us to focus on a…” The Captain paused and smiled at O’Neil. “… diplomatic solutions. We have to be ready in case violence erupts.”

Kate let a small throaty laugh erupt from her lips. She wasn’t sure if Garrett had been told of her no nonsense way of diplomacy or her golden rule of shoot the hostage to end stand offs but for some reason she was starting to like this new captain. He had a way about him. Easy going and laid back in close quarters. She wondered he was like when push came to shove. That other side would come out unfortunately. It always did when the crap hit the fan. Picking up her coffee she stopped getting lost in her thoughts and focused on the briefing

“Primary objective is to figure out just what the hell is really going on and find an…” Garrett pursed his lips in a thoughtful gesture for a moment then continued. “… amiable solution. The UFP has already enacted policies to try and keep the peace, but enforcing said policies has been a challenge. Abuses of said policies are expected to be responded in kind… embargos and the like. The UFP wants this settled and quickly… otherwise, the damn Diplomatic Corps and the Sector Ambassadors get involved.” With a pause, Garrett glanced around the table once more and asked. “Questions?”

Kate raised a finger signaling she had one. Garrett would soon learn among the plethora of nicknames she held, question Kate was one of them. “Do we know the difference in money flow from what the exporters pay the growers. This could be as simple as the growers getting Pennie’s on the dollar for their crops and the exporters selling it for hundreds of dollars. Tammoron grain is pricy. I know. I bake and my family owns the brewery. We pay a hefty price for their grain to make mash.” She took a sip of her coffee. Sometimes the easiest explanation was the right one. Greed was the root of all evil. Maybe this was just a money grab and too many people were getting rich off the profits they didn’t want to see past the end of their nose.

“No Commander, we have not. My understanding is we are to meet with colony leadership upon arrival.” O’Connor smiled slightly. “Regardless, I’d like to have a standard Diplomatic Security detail put together for this mission. Covert arms, lighter looking detail… not your bruisers… people capable on handling hand to hand, but not necessarily looking like it. I want to handle this smoothly… and without force if we can help it. I want… the Admiralty wants the Diplomatic Corps as far from this mess as possible.”

“Also,” Mason chimed in, “do we have any information on how willing the different groups are to sit down and discuss their issues? What was the result of Tammoron’s previous attempts at diplomacy between the groups?”

Cmdr Mason Black, XO

“Apparently…” Garrett continued. “… the result has been… less than ideal.” He shrugged with a slight chuckle. “You don’t send a massive ship like ours into a diplomatic cluster like this as a first option. This is a final step before the preverbal excrement hits the oscillating air handling device.”

Solark spoke up. “I was able to access the general intel files and discovered that the governor and the farmers have been having major disputes only in the last two years. There are three different groups on the farmers side. Before that, the groups were united under a man named Prox. He was usually able to settle issues with the governor amicably. He died of an accident just two years ago, before the major disputes occurred. Now the three groups have been having disagreements. One group chose to compromise so that the dispute regarding the price of the grain can be settled amicably. Another group wants to stand by protectionist policies to safeguard the livelihood of the farmers. A third group wishes to deal with traders themselves, bypassing the governor.”

O’Connor nodded at the COO. “I have a sneaky feeling you will be very helpful to have around. Thank you for that info Chief.”

Kate was always a half-full kinda glass girl so when things were not going the way they should she turned to three options that made the Universe go round. “Love, wealth, and revenge,” Kate said taping a sip of her coffee. “My gut says it is one of the three.”

“I have a feeling you might be right O’Neil, which is why I’m concerned this might go stupid… and why I want your people ready.” Garrett said after pursing his lips.

“Basing that again on the Galaxy time movie network,” Paris let out a laugh. Although Kate thought she was using the scientific method it was not one Paris would sign off on with her approval.

“Go ahead and make fun of Galaxy time movies but these things were as old as life in the galaxy. Since the first amoeba crawled out of the water and looked to his left he either saw a beautiful amoeba with long eyelashes, a rival amoeba, and the desire to either win the girly amoeba with fancy bobbles or screw over his rival amoeba with fancy bobbles. People are generally lazy. They only do things for those reasons. We just need to figure out which one and definitely avoid the Dip cor. You think I talk,” she rolled her eyes. “I was on a mission once with some Dip Cor dude name Ian Bordeaux. I think he lulled them into compliance with the white noise of discussion,” Kate made the universal sign for someone chatty with a hand puppet. Getting back to the point at hand, Kate posed another question.

“Solark you said this Pox and the governor always settled the disputes amicably. What was their connection? People just don’t agree unless there is a reason to and was the accidental death deemed suspicious in any way?”

Kate O’Neill COS

“Also,” Paris raised her finger, “how is the health of the crops. Have there been any growing problems with the grain? Four years ago on Beltrallan V, a story came out about someone tampering with the genetics of the crop to drive up cost and drive down supply. It would have worked because crops do get diseases all the time but someone leaked what was going on.”

Paris Black, Science

“According to the latest available information,” replied Solark, “The strategy of Prox was to negotiate compromise: the same strategy as the first group of farmers. I said that the disputes were settled amicably. That did not mean that the negotiation process was always smooth. Prox was reputed to be a master negotiator and a skilled statistician. He always managed to keep the prices stable despite increasing output to keep up with the increasing demand.”

“As to the question of genetic manipulation, Prox was extremely proud of the quality of organic Tammoron grain. This was how he was able to keep the quality and prices stable,” continued Solark. “Not all the farmers were happy with his principles. Some wanted to make more wealth, as did the governor. However, Pox was able to keep the peace between the various factions.”

“And what do we know of the individual leadership of the three groups?” Abel said. “Because I doubt we will come to a palatable resolution unless we can get the three labor groups to present a unified list of grievances. From what you have said, Commander Solark, the three groups have conflicting goals. If the three groups are not unified, we won’t be able to negotiate without alienating one or more of them.”

“You got any other details in that area Solark?” O’Connor asked of the COO.

O’Connor, CO

Solark presented some profile pictures on the general display. “Prox was succeeded by his daughter Diana, who leads the first group. The second group is led by a farmer named Sima, who wants the governor to protect the livelihood of the farmers by keeping a constant supply rather than regulating supply to keep prices stable. The third is led by a very young farmer named Kino. His ideas are considered the most radical, eliminating the governor’s role in the sale of the grain. Many consider his faction to be the weakest because it does not have the support of the smaller farms. He only has the support of Tracer, the owner of the largest farm on Tammoron. Tracer has been buying up smaller farms and does have a considerable influence on the market of Tammoron grain. However, he is not popular as he is considered a predator, preying on smaller farms.”

Solark switched to a map of the planet. “The farms are only found in this region of the planet as the conditions are the most ideal for grain cultivation. Closer to the equator is the Tammoron city, the capital of the planet. For some reason, there seems to be a device in operation that prevents the transporter from working in the region of the farms. That is why the governor is still unable to use force to quell the farmers’ strike.
