Garrett had moved a bit slower all morning, cursing himself for overdoing it the night before. Addie’s own prowess and their near 7-year age difference caught up to him at times, but that was a hell-of-a problem to have! First they’d both overslept, which meant they were already running late so… like idiots… they thought they could shower together to save time. 25 minutes and a shower-based encore to the night before, they were now running even later than they were before. Garrett squared his quarters after walking Addie back to her room and sent his bags onward the shuttle via the Concierge. He then went and met Addie, helping her get her bags to his shuttle. Enjoying the finally minutes of holding her hand, Garrett’s hand suddenly squeezed hers and dropped unceremoniously as they approached the shuttle. “No reason to start the rumor mill at full tilt before we’re even on the ship Babe.” Garrett said softly with an apologetic smile. “Sorry.”

Addie looked at Garrett a bit confused at first however shore leave was ending. They couldn’t just skip around the halls playing he loves me he loves me not off Eden Prime. Still, sorry babe made Addie wrinkle her nose up. It wasn’t like he needed to say anything. He could have just let go of her hand without comment, but he did comment and apologize. Maybe it was the apology or the slight gnawing headache and scramble to the shuttle that had Addie in a mildly persnickety mood. Giving Garrett a side glance she decided instantly....it was the apology.

Stopping walking, Addie planted her feet and crossed her arms. “Um Garrett I need a second,” she said. Clearing her throat, the next few minutes definitely did not go the way Addie had planned in her mind. “I think we need,” she started before a woman yelling caught Addie’s attention.

The man paused, turning to Addie with a quizzical expression. Garrett was not sure what he’d done wrong, but she seemed… concerned. He let her speak until…

As the couple approached the shuttle, a young pilot waved and ran over to them. The redheaded Lieutenant Commander ran over and with no warning what so ever, threw her arms around Garrett’s neck, practically jumping into his arms and kissing him on the cheek. Garrett caught her effortlessly, kissing her back on the cheek and squeezing her before setting the overly excited woman on the deck.

“Holy frack Cannon!!” The girl practically squeaked, she looked around Addie’s age… if not a year or two younger.

“Yes holy frack,” Addie looked at Garrett wondering why his lips were involved in the greeting instead of his hand.

“How you been?! Did I read the manifest right… FCap?!” She was talking VERY fast and seemed to not even notice Addie. “What’s it been… three years since the 275th?” Garrett smiled and nodded.

Oh my god and my sign is Virgo and still love unicorns and the colors pink, lavender, and teal, Addie’s inner voice added to the sickeningly sweet conversation.

“Nearly four actual…” His voice and tone had noticeably changed, this was someone Garrett knew and he seemed surprised yet happy to see her. “… that was a great tour wasn’t it?”

Not as great as the four-minute flight we are going to take back to the ship. You are so not going to forget that actual four minutes. I have a feeling environmental controls are gonna be on the fritz so you better get that old parka out if any more body parts start touch ol’ Jezebel Jones there. Addie had no reason to be jealous however once the green-eyed monster woke up, it had to be satiated to fall back into its slumber.

Then the woman flushed, giggled, bit her lip and looked away for just a moment before almost breathlessly adding. “Yes… yes it was Mike.”

Then, like a switch, the woman turned to Addie… there was a challenge behind her green eyes and it wasn’t masked, something another woman would spot instantly. But she smiled and offered her hand. “Jessie Wells…” She smiled, the tall redhead looked down slightly at Addie. “… and you are?”

Garret & Jessie

It was at that very moment… Garrett O’Connor knew… he had fracked up. He knew Jess… intimately. They had served together for two years… most of that time breaking each others beds. She was intense, passionate, kinky as all hell… and a lioness when it came to ‘her’ property. The tone of her voice… the challenging, condescending way she spoke and looked down at Addie, she was trying to make her point that she… Jessica Anne Wells… had been here first. And she did NOT like people playing with her toys. She had been possessive to a fault and it had taken his sister nearly putting him through a wall at their parents’ house to get the man to think with the correct part of his anatomy. BK had basically given him no option, making very clear that she would have no part of her brother marrying some trollop from his unit… her exact words in the moment being “I don’t give a damn how well she screws your brains out Michael… she’s not marrying into this family. I will kill her first!” While he did like Jess, BK had a point and Jessica Wells would have never fit into the close nit family. Too flighty.... too about herself and her appearance. Sydi hadn’t had the chance to meet her, but one dinner with the family and a formal banquet at UC Denver’s Business College… at which Jess had kept her hands all over Garrett every chance she could embarrassed BK into making a line in the sand. They had only spoken twice since he took the Monroe, and hadn’t spoken since the promotion. She was a chapter closed… to him. And now… all Garrett could see was his life flashing before his eyes.

The question the woman asked Addie was one every woman knew well. It was the candy-coated tone one all women used to say get out of my way witch yet still be appropriate around grandmothers and in church. The upbeat perkiness and fake pleasantry set Addie up to either respond and come off irrational or respond and come off insecure. Of the two, Addie was leaning more to the former. She opened her mouth to spit out some spicy retort, and then stopped. This Jessie wanted to make Addie falter and wobbly. It was why Jessie attacked Garrett as if he had just saved her from a band of roving pirates. What Jessie didn’t know was that Addie was feeling a little arg matey herself. The woman stated and Garrett agreed it had been a couple of years since the two of them had been in contact. Addie would just make sure to fill in the blanks.

“I’m Addie…Addie O’Connor,” she took Garrett’s hand back into hers making sure she dug her nails slightly into the back of his hand. If the man said anything she would not only mount Jessie’s head to her wall but Garrett’s as well. Being the supply officer of the Odin gave Addie one distinct advantage over most everyone. Addie knew almost everyone, especially the transfers. Even though Garrett slipped past her radar. Addie was sure some low-rent girls gone wild chick was not a permanent resident on the Odin.

Oh s#;^! Garrett felt the nails in his hand and knew this was not going to end well. Both women were squaring off and Addie, bless her twisted little heart, went straight for the Nuclear Option. As far as Jessie was concerned or, for his sake, better be… Garrett O’Connor was off the market… permanently. He turned and smiled down lovingly at Addie, catching the fuming Jessie out of the corner of his eye. It was like a car crash… he just couldn’t look away. He was absolutely clear on how Addie felt about him and he was crazy about her… so that wasn’t what concerned him. His issue right now was a single, terrifying question… Who swings first?

Jessie looked shocked and condescending in a way Garrett had never seen. Who in the hell do you think you are chick!? Garrett watched her face… still warm and smiling. But that tick in her right eye when she was beyond pissed was right there. This was gonna be ugly.

While it was in no way shape or form an engagement ring, Addie did have a ring on each of her ring fingers. The one currently on the spot designated for financee’s did have a large stone and a few diamond chips. It was her birthstone and a sixteenth birthday present but broad didn’t need to know this. The expression on the woman’s face showed she needed some kinda proof. The ring would provide enough reasonable doubt. It also had the added benefit of if Jessie questioned it, it would give ol’ Magic Mike the Cannon next to her the chance to show some righteous indignation about his taste. While Garrett O’Connor was far from a snob, the man did like nice things. His car, his suit, his watch: all showed he had an expensive taste when needed so to insinuate the man gave a cheap ass engagement ring would probably cause a kaboom from the Cannon instead of a sputtering misfire. Lifting her hand, Addie wiggled her finger and then wore a warm smile.

Garrett let out a slow, soft, silent breath. This was getting worse by the second and he had absolutely no idea how in the actual hell he was going to stop it! Why did it have to be Jessie…!?! The one woman that was never quite able to understand the word no… the one that had tried like hell to come back to him for years. She had sent him more than one explicit holovids of her over the years, trying to remind him what he was missing. Garrett had learned long ago not to let the woman back into his head. Jess was a good friend… but once they’d slept together, they both were like a drug to the other. And that was why BK had to finally put her foot down. Now, he stood there beside Addie, wondering when the moment would arrive when this whole thing blew up in his face.

Jess, to her credit, held her control better than Garrett thought possible when Addie showed her the ring. He distinctly remembered ring shopping in Denver with Jess and her looking at something very similar. This was bad, Garrett thought as her eyes flashed angrily at the sight of the ring. He wished Addie knew just how much she was twisting the knife with his former flame. Part of him couldn’t believe what was happening and part was simply in shock.

“While we finally decided to make it official, we didn’t think there was a reason to start the rumor mill at full tilt before we’re even on the ship right, Babe.” Addie knew Garrett would not miss that she had just parroted the lines back he gave her before Jessie ran them down and climbed Garrett like a cat post. Her tone was new to Garrett but his years of command training and dealing with women would show Addie was livid. “Since he is just taking command we thought it was best to wait a bit before the crew got too excited. Can’t have too much good news in one day now can we?” Addie let out the tittering laugh and laid her head on Garrett’s shoulder. “But it is so nice to meet you Bessie Whale.” Addie’s honeyed tone paired with her smile would have been enough to send any diabetic into a sugar comma.

The woman opened her mouth to speak, her look suddenly incredulous. She was starting to tremble and looked like she was about to scream when Addie went for the kill.

“Yes,” Addie smiled not outwardly acknowledging the correction of the woman’s name. “So I assume you were friends years ago? I only say that because Mike,” she let her voice raise as if it were a question but the side glance to Garrett, “hasn’t mentioned you before. Funny because I seem to have known and met everyone but you.”

Addie Halsey

“You arrogant son-of-a-bitch!” Jessie’s eyes swung toward Garrett, fire blazing as she took a step toward him and CRACK slapped the pilot straight across the face before he could even flinch. “Nice to see I’m so easily replaced after your lil sister…” Her tone mocking. “… told you you couldn’t play with me any more! Pathetic!” She hissed. “You watch your back kid…” She snapped at Addie. “… you married into one hell-of-a-family!”

Garrett O’Connor & Jessica Wells

Addie’s mouth opened hearing the crack and she did a small double-take. Her shock was only momentary as Addie looked at Garrett. “Hold this,” she handed him her purse, reached out, and drove her shoulder into Jessie’s pelvis hard backward. While pilots were known for their hand-eye coordination, they were not as agile typically as a security officers. It was also to Addie’s advantage in this situation the woman was larger than her. That meant her center of gravity was different than Addie’s. Avoiding an expected blow to the face, Addie’s maneuver caught Jessie so that the woman doubled over slightly. The momentum of Addie propelled both women backward and into the large ornate fountain behind them.

Well %#$! Garrett thought, taking a slow breath and holding Addie’s purse as she went pro-wrestler on Jess. I guess that was THE breaking point! The veteran officer really embarrassed, more just momentarily lost as the women went tumbling into the fountain. He didn’t bother to speak… he knew damn well neither would listen to him. He just hoped both that Addie didn’t hurt Jess too bad and that Addie made it out of the fray OK.

The splash pulled everyone’s attention both arriving and departing to the fountain where the two women were now sloshing water over the edge of the intricate porcelain tiles. It especially pulled Lt. Commander Kate O’Neill’s attention. She and Shaun both stopped and watched what was probably going to be the prize-winning clip on the next Spring Break Girls Gone Wild holovid. “Is that Addie,” Shaun looked at the typically happy-go-lucky supply chief now wallowing about in the knee-deep water with another woman.

“Yep,” Kate nodded admiring Addie’s approach to the situation.

Addie felt the fingers knot into her hair and her head tilt back slightly. It was put up or shut uptime. Instead of trying to physically take the woman down blow by blow Addie wrapped her leg around the woman’s by the knee and pulled Jessie’s leg out from under her.

“Are you gonna go stop it,” Shaun asked as the pilot reached back grabbing a fist full of Addie’s hair.

“Nope. It was a nice leg sweep. She had it and I am not on duty for another two hours,” Kate shrugged and began walking to her shuttle. If she intervened there would have to be a report. If she kept walking there was plausible deniability.

As the pair went back down into the water, Addie spoke. “Don’t you ever talk about my family again!” Addie pulled her arm back and socked the woman in the nose? The sickening crack and blood starting to pour from the woman’s nose indicated it was likely a break. “And don’t ever mess with a supply chain officer. We get our $h1t done,” Addie stood up and started to make her way to the edge of the fountain in the high kneed walk typical of someone in knee-deep water. Seeing the crowd of people looking at her, Addie raised her hands in a calming manner.

Garrett cringed as Addie landed the punch. He knew the catfight over… well… him, would be all over the nets in an hour. He hoped to God that it didn’t get to the Odin too quickly.

“She is fine. She is okay. She had a murder hornet on her,” Addie let her gaze fall on Garrett as she uttered the word murder before again letting her gaze scan the crowd. Addie’s tone was calm as if she were at a press conference and explaining what was happening. Several guests looked around as if searching for another errant stinging insect. “It landed first on the man with the purse and then on her. As everyone knows the only way to deal with pests like that is crushing blows or submersion.” Stepping out of the fountain, Addie reached out wringing the water from her hair. “Don’t worry. We got it and the exterminators are on route.”

Addie Halsey.

Garrett kicked himself for finding Addie surprisingly attractive in the moment, breathing heavy and soaked to the bone. He cleared his head quickly, offering her her purse. “I’d like to say if that was truly necessary but I know you both…” He snorted a chuckle as they walked away from a screaming Jessie. “… so I know better. But you didn’t have to break her nose Anastasia.” It wasn’t so much of a scold as a factly statement. “Come on babe… let’s get you cleaned up.” He said as he slipped his dry over-shirt on her shoulders, kissing her on the top of the head.
