The Odin was 20 minutes away from Tammaron and scans were made. While there were life signs on the planet, production activities seemed to have ceased for most of the planet, definitely not enough to show export numbers.

The Tammoron governor hailed the Odin at this time.

GM

=/\=Sir the Tammoron governor is hailing us. Channel is open on your mark =/\= the comms officer stated.

NE Comms officer

“Open channel,” Mason ordered, then leaned back in the chair to see what the governor had to say.

=/\= Tammoron, this is the Federation Starship Odin. How may we be of assistance? =/\=

Mason Black, XO

“Thank you, Odin, for coming to Tammoron to offer aid. Please tell me how we can assist you in your mission,” said the governor.

GM

Garrett walked onto the Bridge, thankful the XO had responded promptly to the comm call. Moving to the Centre Chair, O’Connor settled… his gaze lifting calmly to the Governor’s.

Looking at the Captain now that the Governor was on the screen, Mason waited for him to take over. Placing his knuckles under his chin, thumb extended towards his neck, he settled in to listen and try and look intelligent.

Mason Black, XO

The facial expression of the governor was calm but his eyes did not seem to be looking at the display but somewhere beyond. The eyes did not say that he was calm at all.

GM

Kate noted that the production of the planet was akin to life in the 1950s. No activity anywhere. It was as if everything had shut down for the day. Running her sensors, she brought up several of the largest tracts of Tammorron grain fields and enlarged the visuals checking to see what was going on there. The weather in these areas showed it was a perfect day for farming and farming was not like other industries. When the weather was bad no work was done. When the weather was good, it was activity everywhere. If the weather was good and nothing was happening the question was why. Blowing up several images she tried to see if there was anything going on with the large corporation fields vs. the smaller family fields.

Kate O’Neill COS

O’Connor noticed immediately that the Governor was uneasy and, tugging his tunic straight, began to speak smoothly. =A= Governor, I’m Captain Garrett O’Connor, Commanding Officer of the Odin. The most important thing my team needs right now is to meet with your leadership and be brought up to speed on the challenges you have experienced since first requesting assistance and to clarify if the situation has changed.=A= After a pause, Garrett asked as gently as he could. =A= Governor… is everything quite alright? =A=

O’Connor, CO

=/\=I understand that some overreactive native on this planet has bothered the Federation with a complaint. It is actually a rather small matter; nothing that we cannot handle on our own,=/\= replied the governor.

Tactical detected attempts on the planet to prevent other communications from reaching the ship.

GM

“Sir,” Kate replied in a firm tone, “I am detecting some interference with communication with the planet. It seems to be a localized interference spreading out from a central point.” With a flick of her finger, Kate sent the image of what seemed to be a blanketed interference surrounding various locations except for the one where the Governor was located. “The interference is not meteorological but seems to be mechanical.” Kate had enough tact on an open line not to directly say the Governor’s government was producing it but she left it open-ended enough for the Captain or XO to ask the question directly if necessary.

Kate O’Neill COS

“Overreactive native?” Mason asked while he waited for the Captain to reply. “Are you not from Tammoron, Governor?” The phrasing the man had used indicated to Mason that he was either not born on the planet, or highly dismissive of local people outside of his circle.

Cmdr Black, XO

“Of course!” said the governor rather perturbed. “I am of this planet. How could I be governor if not?”

“Forgive me,” Mason said smiling widely. “I assumed from your offhand comment about the people on your world that you may have not been a native yourself.”

The XO beat Garrett to the punch on that one. He pursed his lips and seemed deep in thought for a moment before he shot a quick text to O’Neil’s console. It read simply:

=A= Kate… can we kill the interference?=A=

Kate opened her mouth to reply and saw a small blip appear on her screen. Opening it she read the message.

His eyes had never moved from the screen in front of him, but the message in front of the COS would bare the message code for “PRIORITY ONE”. From her position on the Bridge, she could see the Odin’s Commander then fold the small Tactical Repeater Plot from the arm of the Centre Chair. When he did, the Tactical Console’s display in front of Kate was mirrored to the Captain’s. She then saw on her console what the veteran pilot was doing… silently initiating a Threat Scan of orbital structures and craft. It was very clear the Odin’s new Skipper was as paranoid if not more so than the Security Chief.

O’Connor, CO

“Trying to pinpoint now sir,” Kate said in a nonchalant tone.

The scan showed that there was a small vessel, not as big as a runabout but large than a shuttlecraft. It was on geostationary orbit at the other side of the planet.

GM

“Sir,” Kate addressed Garrett, “I am detecting a small geostationary object on the far side of the planet. It is probably the source of the interference.” Her tone was passive but her fingers typed out a message for Garrett in the same manner he sent her about the tactical scan. Take it out? I can do it loud and proud with a torpedo lock or dirty and sneaky with a small projectile to make it look like a bit of space debris. Please say we can use our large honkin’ space guns. Kate looked up waiting for either a verbal reply or a textual one.

Kate O’Neill COS

Mason heard the fingers typing, and simply slowly turned his head to look at O’Neill, then just as slowly shook it. He didn’t need to read anything she was sending the CO to know what she was asking.

Cmdr Black, XO

Kate gave the XO a small smirk and shrug of the shoulders trying to appear innocent but she had worked with Mason long enough the man knew exactly what she was thinking.

Kate O’Neill COS

=/\=I am sorry that you have been called all the way out here on a very small matter,=/\= replied the governor. =/\=If you are not in a hurry, may I invite the Captain and the senior crew to a simple meal to thank you for your trouble?=/\=

GM

The Captain leaned back in his chair and smiled slightly. =A= My Staff and I would be more than happy to join you Governor. If you would be so kind as to transmit the details to us at your convenience…=A= O’Connor continued calmly. =A=… we’ll be down shortly there after. That being said, I will leave you to address the details of our visit and look forward to hearing from you soon. Odin Clear. =A=

Garrett killed the Comm and his demeanor changed instantly. “Yellow Alert… no shields…” He began flatly. “… Commander O’Neill, launch both Alert Shuttles.” He stood smartly as he spoke, turning to face the Bridge Crew. “I wanna know exactly what the source of that interference is before I set one foot off this ship. Have them approach from opposite sides of the planet… silent running till they’re right on top of it. Secure said source as necessary.”

Looking to Mason, Garrett nodded toward the Ready Room. “A word Exec…” O’Connor said, already moving toward the door. “O’Neill… the minute you’re done, can you join us?” This was the last thing the Bridge Crew heard as the Captain entered his Ready Room.

O’Connor, CO

Solark took his cue to take over the CO’s chair as the CO and XO went towards the Ready Room.

Solark

Kate hid the sigh and soft groan only slightly. It was not that Garrett was bad. It was just she knew the speech that was coming. Don’t suggest torpedos as the first sign of diplomacy and don’t point out your nacelles are bigger than the people we are taking to. Kate begrudgingly moved from her console and followed the CO and XO as requested.

Kate O’Neill. COS

OOC: I am assuming that the alert shuttles have been sent …

IC: The data sent back was that the vessel was monitoring communications and only allowing some messages through. The vessel itself was communicating with someone on the planet but it was not with any government agency. Rather it was with Tracer’s faction.

GM

The moment the Comm Chime sounded from the Bridge, the Odin’s skill replied briskly =A= O’Connor… go.=A=

Paris looked at the data coming in and frowned. =/\=Sir, we are getting the data in from the shuttles. It seems like the vessel blocking the transmission are communicating with someone on the planet but not from any governmental agency that I can tell. Best guess at this time is the communication is with Tracer’s faction=/\= Paris reported to the CO in the next room.

Paris Black sciences.

Solark awaited the CO’s decision and kept his eyes on the displays at the commander’s seat.

Solark

O’Connor came back suddenly with =A= Have one of the Shuttles stay far enough off to not be detected.=A= He paused before adding =A= Piggyback the signal and provide the Odin with a live feed of their communications if possible. I wanna know what they’re talking about and would prefer they not know we know… =A=

O’Connor, CO

Solark moved back to the Ops station.

Solark

“Ask and ye shall receive,” Paris said and followed O’Connor’s directions. Several minutes later the data began to pour onto the Odin’s bridge.

The contents of the communications were encrypted and used different cyphers each time. The approximate content of the communications were like this:

All factions are trying to locate Diana. Prox’s (Diana’s father) faction seems to be at loss without Diana. Kino’s (Tracer) faction wants to delay the meeting between the governor and Diana. Sima’s faction is being placated by Tracer but is not very effective because they are very suspicious of Tracer.

GM

“Aww crap,” Paris groaned shaking her head. “Why? Why can’t people just make it easy for us?”

“They have encrypted the signal. I mean it is not like we can’t decipher it but really, really....why should we? Commander,” Paris called out to Solark.

“Do we know if this is one of the governor’s comm satellites or one of the factions? I mean isn’t kinda odd for the governor to be bouncing a signal off one of their own satellites? Or is the satellite one of the factions and both us and the governor are eavesdropping?” Paris didn’t think it really mattered except that if the governor was using it to spy on the factions that could me the factions were far better equipt and organized than just a bunch of disgruntled dirt pushers.

Looking back at her console, Paris began to run the message through the decryption devices.

Paris Black

From the various communications going through the satellite, it seems that it belongs to Tracer and it is spying on the other factions and blocking transmissions between factions. What they were intercepting were messages moving within each faction.

GM

“Well this is interesting,” Paris said out loud to no one in particular. “It seems no one trusts anyone here. From what I can tell the satellite is spying on everyone. The factions, the government. Hell I think one of the feeds is actually spying on itself,” she let out a chuckle. “The satellite however seems to be controlled by the Tracer faction and not the government.”

Paris Black

“The question, then,” said Solark, “is whether the government is aware of the fact that they are being blocked and what they are doing about it, isn’t it?”

Solark

It was then that there was an encrypted message on the Tracer channel that said that they had located Diana …

GM

bump

“Sir,” Paris called out to Solark who seemed to always be the one at the conn when the skipper and junior were off doing something. “The computer finished the transcription and it seems like they transmitting they have found someone named Diana? Do we know who this Diana is?” Maybe Paris should have been focusing on the meeting instead of the bacon. Making a mental note she commed the Captian again in his ready room.

=/\=Sir the computers have decrypted the message from the satellite and are looking for someone by the name of Diana? We also are trying to figure out if the government knows they are being blocked or piggybacking off the signal to get intel from the Tracer group=/\=

Lt. Commander Paris Black science

“Diana is the son of Prox, the leader of one of the factions, who is recently deceased,” replied Solark. “This is interesting,” he murmured, “Diana, according to the LCARS write-up, was considered the natural successor of Prox.” He turned to Black and asked, “Would you be able to track down where Diana would be? If Tracer is looking for Diana, we need to consider whether Diana should be protected.”

Solark

Kate looked at Garrett and stood up heading back to the bridge. Lost children and armed men were two things Kate specialized in. Moving from the room, she entered the bridge and went to her station. Bringing up her console, Kate searched the news feeds for anyone named Diana cross-referencing it with politics, humanitarian work, activism, protests, and social status along with her usual scan of the judicial and police records. “Let’s see if we can figure out why you are so popular Ms. Diana,” she said waiting for the results to appear.

Kate O’Neill COS

It took some time before the computer was able to extract messages connected to Ms. Diana or her father. One of the messages implied that Prox had evidence of what Tracer was planning for Tammoron wheat trade and had a plan to counter Tracer. Another message reported that a search was made of Prox’s premises and no evidence was found. This message was after Prox’s death. A series of messages showed that Tracer had suspected that the evidence was in Diana’s hands.

GM

“Paris can you scan the messages for anything that has to do with the Tammoron grain. Production yields, most profitable regions, etc,” Kate threw the message to the side sending it to Paris’ terminal as she looked up a more specific target.

“Who are you Ms. Diana,” Kate said as various records began to fill her screen. Numerous articles came up recounting the death of Prox and a slew of conspiracy theories about it. All the theories pointed however to Diana having more information than she was currently sharing. “You are popular Ms. Diana,” Kate took a sip of her coffee. Kate followed the trail and singled out any message where money or power would be achieved with a stirring up of the old system. This led to finding a file about what Prox planned to do to out with Tracer in the grain game. Tapping a button, Kate searched for more information on what this plan was.

Kate O’Neill COS

Paris opened the data packet Kate sent her and began to triangulate the most profitable grain-producing regions and the output. While Tammoron grain was a luxury of the galaxy, it still served as a food source for the planet’s populace. Paris put in data requests for the computer to analyze speficially looking for the amount of grain to be produced, how much went to export, and how much was left to feed the populace.

Paris Black science

OOC: Apologies!! How did the time pass so fast … Just a note: it has been established that Diana is the late Prox’s daughter. Refer to https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf5/odin/posts/163586/

OOC: No problem and thanks for the note. I was hoping for a refresher on the characters. Also…you rock as a GM. I have to say I am a huge fan of all your sims. Thank you for all you do for the ships and the stories you create for us. ~ Kate

IC: It would seen that Diana was on the run from those who would harm her. Whether she had the evidence or not was hard to tell because the reports were all based on conjecture.

From the analysis of the Tammoron grain data, Kino’s group (which Tracer supports) cannot get a comfortable profit from his schemes without either Sima’s or Diana’s group. While Kino’s group had bigger farms, the quality of the grain was not as good as the other two groups, which had farms in better soil. There was more than enough grain to feed the local populace. As to the evidence the Prox had, they was no data of what Tracer was planning for the Tammoron grain trade. All that was known was that Tracer had been buying up farms severals years before.

GM

Kate looked up from her console after collating all the information into a possible theory of what was happening dirtside. “Okay so as we know Diana was Prox’s daughter but she is now off the grid so to speak because she is worried for her safety. Why is the question I am wondering?” Looking at the crew Kate chewed her lip for a second. So we know that one group agreed to play ball over the dispute regarding the price of the grain but the other group was standing firm with the farmers. Which again I hate to continually bring up but,” Kate sighed, “they are the ones with the barbecue. The really really like insanely good barbecue.” The shameless plug uttered, Kate moved back to business. The last group went all separatiest and wanted to deal directly with the traders which of course royally pissed off the gov’ner,” she said in her best British accent.

“I think we need to find Diana. If she is on the run that means one of the three groups is probably not just mouthing off and is planning something or she is planning something. The word on the street is she is hiding out for her safety but that could be a press statement to make sure people don’t panic.”

“I think we should send an away team down there Sir,” she said to the captain.

Kate O’Neill COS

“I think it might be more Kino’s group wants Diana to back their play. We know that Kino’s group, which supports Tracer bought up a lot of land but the quality of the grain is not as good impacting the profit margin. We know Sima’s group has better grain but less of it. Both Kino and Sima need Diana to make any of this work. I agree with Kate,” Paris looked at her friend. “Not for the barbecue but I think we need to get people on the ground. If the grain is not the quality that most people covet, the price will fall and actually make Sima and Diana’s followers more profitable. The less of something the more it is worth.”

Paris Black

“We do not have enough data to actually come to a more definite conclusion, I concur with Commander O’Neill that we need to at least talk to the people involved,” commented Solark.

GM

“So what if we send down three teams,” Kate suggested leaning against the console. “I take some boots on the ground.” Looking over at Morgana, Kate mouthed I got you and winked. The woman needed some fun and while an away team mission wasn’t the exact definition of a good time it would get her in the fresh air. “The Captain gets to deal with the government because of his diplomatic skills. The XO takes another team on the ground,” she shrugged at her idea.

Kate O’Neill COS

Paris looked at Mason. She loved away missions with him. “Any preference on Prox or Sima?” Both groups were involved in grain production which meant she should be with one of them. “With any luck, one of us might find Diana with the groups either by choice or by force.”

Paris Black science

Garrett stepped through the door of his Ready Room and strode to his chair with a nod to the Department Heads. “Lets do our best keep the ‘by force’ to a minimum ladies.” He smiled and looked to his Exec. “Commander… anything to add to their plan?”

O’Connor, CO

OOC: My apologies. I was overwhelmed by RL work because I had to cover the duties of an absent colleague.

Kenson
GM

OOC: no problem. Just glad to have you back. -Kate

OOC: Thanks! Actually waiting for the responses from CO and XO to come in, so I can plot the next move. :)
