The fat-faced human man speaking in the sub space comms sounded indignant as he tried to yell over the commotion behind him. “Mister Abel -” he started before being cut off by the CMO of the Odin. “That’s Doctor Abel to you, Fergusen.” The normal soft-spoken and chipper doctor was neither soft spoken or chipper at the moment, and that was readily apparent in the reaction of the man trying desperately to speak. “FINE. DOCTOR Abel, you simply can’t do this! I know your reputation in the medical arena is stellar, but in business -” and again Abel cut him off.

“In business I have grown the Foundation’s primary funding by thirty-nine percent over the past 18 standard months even accounting for a three fold increase in spending. Our rate of return on our medical licensing has grown seventy-seven percent over the last nine standard months with an anticipated growth for the next eleven years. You, Fergusen, seem to have forgotton that even without that I don’t care about the money.” Abel scolded the flabby cheeked man. “Let me ask you this, Fergusen. Did the supplies make it there on time?” “Well, yes… but -” and Abel waved him silent. “Yes. Did the supplies prove effective and did the city see a decrease in deaths immediately after?” Rhe man sighed heavily and said “Again yes but the cost -” and Abel stood up and screamed at the vid screen. “DAMN YOUR COST AND DAMN YOUR MONEY GRUBBING HIDE YOU SACK OF TARG DUNG!!” The commotion behind the man ceased immediately and Fergusen swallowed hard as his eyes went wide.

Abel… quiet, demure, happy Abel the doctor was beet red and breathing like a wounded Klingon. “I have had it with you, you greddy little schill. You have second guessed and drug your feet since the Board appointed you to the CFO spot. Well, that ends now. As the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, I have had it. Get out. Do not ever show your jeweled face around my Foundation again. And you can shove whatever severance you think you are owed somewhere painful. That will, instead, be donated to the orphanage build on Consdil II. Now get out before I reach through this screen and choke the life out of your greedy, sweaty, spineless body.” and he sat down hard and glared at the rest of the ‘Board’.

“Anyone else wanna put a price tag on helping people?”

Abel, CMO

Lissi had been coming to see if Abel was free to join her for something to eat. She came into the vacant medical bay in time to hear the end of the tirade. Frowning and on edge, the engineer slowly rounded the corner of his office and glanced at the room to see who was the target of his ire.

Seeing the console before him, she paused to watch a moment. He seemed in control so she wouldn’t butt in. But she did make sure if he glanced up, he’d see her with arms crossed, leaning on the door jamb, smiling softly at him in support of whatever was happening.

He looked up and shook his head and gave her a ‘Give me a minute’ gesture. Turning back to the console he said “I didnt think so. Now get this done, ladies and gentlemen. Now. And somebody find me a new CFO.” and he cut the comms abruptly and flopped down in his chair.

Abel, CMO

Lissi frowned and moved up to the side of Abel’s chair. “Abel, what is it? That didn’t sound good from the little I heard.” She looked down into the cup on his desk to see what it had been and if there was any left. He looked like he could use a stiff drink, but she’d merely refill whatever he had a moment ago, for now.

Concern and compassion filled her feature for him. She had come to care deeply for the man. And now, here he was, angered because of something she couldn’t just shoot someone for and fix the situation. She let a small laugh slip from her lips at the thought then touched his arm lightly. “What were you drinking?”

“Tea. Its nothing. Just an individual who refused to take the mission of the Foundation into account when he decided to turn down a request for help because it would have been ‘too expensive’.” he said and took a deep breath.

Abel, CMO

She moved to the replicator to get him a fresh cup. “Is it too late to give the help? Perhaps something I can help with?” She moved back to set it beside the other cup and rested herself on the edge of his desk. “Tell me how I can help. I want to be a part of this with you.” She smiled at him full of sincere desire. This was a passion of his and reached so many others, it had been on her mind to help because she wanted to be part of something bigger than herself.

“Think you could build me a Chief Financial Officer that is worth a damn?” and he chuckled. “Fourth one in a year and a half. I just can’t seem to get it through their heads: cost doesn’t matter. We will recoup expenses from alternative revenue streams that only exist to create funding and material for our mission. But no… these idiots still operate on the premise that we should be making profit off of the suffering of others. And that is not nor will it ever be a part of my foundation.”

Abel, CMO

She frowned slightly. “Maybe a financial officer is what you need for the incoming things, like the alternative streams you spoke of. But maybe you need someone else for the outgoing benefits. Someone who can be the weigher of the compassionate rating of the requests and needs that come in.”

She stood up and walked to the window that looked into the medical bday. Turning around, she cocked her head slightly. “How about a retired medical professional? Someone of renown who can work hand in hand with your financial team to find those projects that need funding. They could be the one to say this i.e that place needs X amount of funds and resources, then go to the finance board and say I need this amount moved to this location.” She moved back towards the desk and sat back on the edge if it beside him.

“Boards and advisors are great for running the books, dear. But you need someone with your compassion and heart to run the business. And your business is compassion. Isn’t it?” She had no head for business and actually expected her idea to earn her a pat on a head and a thanks for making him laugh.
