“Tea. Its nothing. Just an individual who refused to take the mission of the Foundation into account when he decided to turn down a request for help because it would have been ‘too expensive’.” he said and took a deep breath.

Abel, CMO

She moved to the replicator to get him a fresh cup. “Is it too late to give the help? Perhaps something I can help with?” She moved back to set it beside the other cup and rested herself on the edge of his desk. “Tell me how I can help. I want to be a part of this with you.” She smiled at him full of sincere desire. This was a passion of his and reached so many others, it had been on her mind to help because she wanted to be part of something bigger than herself.

“Think you could build me a Chief Financial Officer that is worth a damn?” and he chuckled. “Fourth one in a year and a half. I just can’t seem to get it through their heads: cost doesn’t matter. We will recoup expenses from alternative revenue streams that only exist to create funding and material for our mission. But no… these idiots still operate on the premise that we should be making profit off of the suffering of others. And that is not nor will it ever be a part of my foundation.”

Abel, CMO

She frowned slightly. “Maybe a financial officer is what you need for the incoming things, like the alternative streams you spoke of. But maybe you need someone else for the outgoing benefits. Someone who can be the weigher of the compassionate rating of the requests and needs that come in.”

She stood up and walked to the window that looked into the medical bday. Turning around, she cocked her head slightly. “How about a retired medical professional? Someone of renown who can work hand in hand with your financial team to find those projects that need funding. They could be the one to say this i.e that place needs X amount of funds and resources, then go to the finance board and say I need this amount moved to this location.” She moved back towards the desk and sat back on the edge if it beside him.

“Boards and advisors are great for running the books, dear. But you need someone with your compassion and heart to run the business. And your business is compassion. Isn’t it?” She had no head for business and actually expected her idea to earn her a pat on a head and a thanks for making him laugh.

Abel sighed heavily. “If only it were that simple.” And he leabed back and closed his eyes. After a moment of silence, he opened his eyes and looked at her. “So. To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?”

Abel, CMO

“Well I am sure you will think of something. And I’m always here to help. But I actually came to see if you wanted to go to dinner or take a walk. You’ve been in here all day and it’s well past shift change by several hours.” She smiled and nodded out behind her towards the bay. “I am sure this shift doesn’t need you hovering. And if business needs attending to,” she nodded to the console he had shut off, “perhaps the privacy of your quarters, or mine, and some food might be a better choice.” She smiled once more and stood up from where she was perched on his desk. “Come on. Let’s let the shift supervisor at least think he’s capable of working without you overseeing him for a while.” She laughed slightly trying to help lighten his mood.
