A SitRep appeared on the panel built into the conference room table where the Captain sat.

sensors began to pick up activity on the surface of the planet. The population was not very large, about 400 thousand scattered all over the main continent. However, what was alarming was that there were activity on the surface of the planet consistent with violence. Life signs were moving and many were getting weaker. There were also signs of explosions and the like on the planet.

The Captain sent it to the main screen in the conference room for all to view but did not stop the reporting process.

Parker CO

“Who boy,” Jason whistled when he looked at the screen.

The Counselor made a mental note to speak to Xandra at some point, but his focus was primarily on the display that the Captain had put up. “What’s going on down there?” The Lieutenant asked quietly to himself.

CNS

“I might be wrong,” Jason said as the color left his face, “but I think we’re looking at what happens on the planet’s surface when the mind control is turned off.” Could it be true? Were the officers and crew of the Dragoon victims of mind control? Was the entire planet? The ENTIRE PLANET? What could do that? With an ashen face, he turned to look at Xandra.

Jason Harn, XO
“I need answers and options.” The Captain said. “Are we relatively sure we are safe up here? Can we use the Dragoon in any manner to our benefit? If were going down what should we do. A large heavily armed party or a small insertion team? This is what you get paid to do. Give me options?”

Parker CO
Toro listened “It is my opinon that a small insertion team would be better. Once we have a clearer idea of what is going on, we can send in additional support. The smaller the team the better chance of success.” She said “In research the area where the child was found, there is a small clearing that has some cover that could be used to bringin the team.” She suggested.

CIO

Ch’zaolrirh’s eyes scanned the monitor. He searched for any particularly large pocket of lifeforms that could resemble the remainder of the Dragoon crew. Without averting his eyes he spoke aloud, “I concur with the CIO. We need to establish the exact location and mental state of the Dragoon crew before taking any bold measures.”

“Medical might be able to set up a cortical jammer.” He looked across the table. “I’ll see if there were any telepathic species on the Dragoon. If so, that would imply that there is not natural defense.”

“There seems to be a range limit. Not too much more or less than the range of the Microwave weapon. I’ve never seen mass weaponized mind control before. Perhaps research of the data base will come up with a similar situation.” Kolar seemed to remember something in the kin occurred to the Enterprise under Picard… almost started a war.

Kolar.

The COS jumped in again, “We can’t take any chances by allowing the Olinski into the range of those emitters. If we can get the Dragoon fully operational, perhaps we can use her for forward operations as necessary.” He paused for a moment, “Do we know if the CAG has made contact with anyone from the Dragoon?”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“I can get the Dragoon up and running. If we need to, we can use security tapes and logs to try to look for evidence of any mind control. Odd behaviour from the crew, etc. The hard part is hotwiring a Pendragon class ship. As hard parts go, could be worse. I can do it.” Michael had the look of a mad scientist in his eye. He wanted to get back to his pet project. If he succeeded, possibly his greatest ever achievement.

-Lt Michael Gould, CE

“The ship’s log indicated that the Dragoon’s people never got a chance to raise their shields,” Jason added. “While Gould and his people are getting the Dragoon up and running we can analyze the frequency of that microwave emitter in order to come up with the most effective shield frequency to counter it. We don’t want to get the Dragoon powered up only have it start firing on the Olinski if our mind control theory checks out. Of course, since we’ll have to lower the shields if we want to use the Dragoon’s transporters it will make rescuing her crew a bit chancy.”

Jason Harn, XO

Xandra had frozen when she was asked about what happened in the fighter. The others had started talking and she’d let them. But as the idea of more people going down was made she shook her head. First it was barely a shiver, but then it was emphatic. At a momentary pause, she spoke up. Her voice was raised because she’d thought she’d have to speak over them. But because of silence, her first couple words were fairly shouted before she caught herself. “No! You can’t!”

Biting her lip, she took a breath. “I mean, we should find a way that doesn’t involve ‘more’ folks going to the surface. We can set a couple shuttles like hoping pads between here and the planet. Beam up survivors a few at a time and leap frog them to the Olinski.” She wasn’t aware that her hands were white knuckled, wringing themselves against one another as she spoke. “It takes control. There’s a hum. Like vibration more than sound. But it grows till you cover your ears. But it doesn’t stop. Then… Nothing. You can’t feel… Can’t move,” her hands reflexively stopped their panicked twisting. “You can see, but you can’t speak. You can hear and feel yourself screaming in your head. But nothing comes out.”

She glanced around the table as she spoke. “It takes over. Controls you.” She shook herself mentally and physically. The shudder helped clear her head. “Sir, we can’t risk to many essential personnel. Ric and his squad are down there now. Let me take a shuttle and help. I know how it feels, now. I will know if I have to pull back. I can stay as the first ‘pad’ and beam up folks from the surface. Another shuttle between me and the Olinski should be sufficient. And they’d be out of range.”

There… She’d asked. No one else needed to risk themselves. This is what pilots did… They saved people.

Lt Xandra Primage
Green squad leader
“Little Sehlat”

“Lt. We cannot beam people aboard the Olinski and not know what has happened to them. Nor can we give them back the Dragoon. We simply have to see whats happening down there before we act. I agree on the smaller team. Lets get as much info as possible from a small tactical team. Science needs to figure out how to prevent the Olinski from being a target by blocking out these waves and medical needs to give answers on how we can apply that to people going down and those already under control. Any changes we make to shields has to carry over to the Dragoon where Gould will get it ready to take on its crew again and help out if necessary. Toro is a must on the team. Number One any other suggestions?” The Captain asked at last.

Parker CO

Before Harn could answer, a comm came in from CIC. =^=Captain Parker, this is Ens. Bell in CIC, we have confirmation from Cmdr O’Shea that he is returning to the Olinski with a child he retrieved from the surface. She is the 12 year old daughter of a Lt. Paul Reiser and Ens.Judith Reiser, an engineer and stellar cartographer, respectively of the Dragoon’s crew. He also reports that the microwave emitters that were holding the Dragoon have been destroyed by Green Squad. He has also ordered the rest of the fighter squads to run surveillance on the surface from a high altitude orbit. Lt. Kaev and Lt. Ursachenko will be coordinating the flight crews in orbit, sir.=^=

NE Bell (comm officer) a.k.a Ricochet

Xandra’s hand went up to cover her mouth as a gasp of relief spilled from her lips. “Sorry,” she murmured as the comm continued. He was all right and so was the rest of the squadron. That made her feel better more than any other info in the last hour.

Ch’zaolrirh’s antennae perked up, “I know she is just a child, but we should have a member of security assigned to Ms. Reiser in case she has been compromised.”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“Good idea and a counselor from your staff or yourself.” Sid replied to the CoS and then to the CNS.

=^=Clear Ens. Bell. Security and Counseling staff will meet him with the child. =^=

Sid awaited his XO for any input to include the make up of the Away Team.

Parker CO

Jason cleared his throat, but after that he was all business. “It’s painfully clear we’re going to have to send some one down to find and recover the Dragoon’s crew. Commander O’Shea and his pilots are already on site, but Ric’s people are pilots, and don’t necessarily have the landing party experience that those of us around this table do. I’m asking for volunteers, because the risk is real, not only for life and limb but also for your free will. For anyone who doesn’t volunteer, don’t worry, there is plenty to do right here aboard the Olinski that’s just as important.”

He glanced across the table at the science officer and hoped he remembered which Bajoran name was the surname, the first or last name. “Mister Balfor, we need your scientific expertise down on the planet, but if you think that your time could be better spent staying up here and devising a defense against that mind control weapon, go to it.”

“Telepathy isn’t my area of expertise, the Medical officer or a telepath might be more effective in that area.” He tilted his head.

The first officer then addressed the chief engineer. “Mister Gould, I’ll bet we will be encountering alien technology down there and will need your experience. There’s nothing wrong with the Dragoon to prevent a skeleton crew from getting that ship powered up enough to escape the range of that microwave weapon. But if you’ve got a better idea or a project that could help us in the current crisis, feel free to share it.”

Jason then addressed the counselor. “Trevor, if my hunch is correct we’re going to be dealing with a lot of people who may or may not be under the influence of some sort of mental domination. The idea of beaming down without you seems ludicrous. But at the same time we’ve twelve year old child who has lost her parents and needs your help. If you can find out whether or not she was affected by whatever happened to the Dragoon’s crew that would be a lifesaver because it would help us form a defense. Whether or not your time could be better spent planetside or aboard the Olinski is your call.”

“I think I’d be more useful up here talking with the child, for now.” The Counselor responded, turning his attention to the XO. “I’ve had my fair share of fights....” Trevor added, slightly feeling the scar above his right eyebrow. The Counselor might be able to get some important information from the child, that could be used to better help the landing party.

CNS

Next, Jason addressed the Olinski’s Security/Tactical experts. “Mirri, Thell, I don’t need to tell you that we’re going to need your knowledge of small unit tactics down there. Not only do we need to contend with any threat the kidnappers may pose, but we may also have to deal with resistance from the very people we’re trying to rescue. Still, I think that one of you should remain here and work on the shield modulations to keep the Olinski under our control and come up with some way to restrain and process the Dragoon’s crew when we find them.”

The COS deferred to Toro. She was the senior tactical officer and he was ready to take on either role.

And finally he turned to Xandra. “Lieutenant Primage, whether or not you’re fit to return to duty depends on whether or not Counselor Michaels thinks your ready to fly. If you believe that you have some insight that could help us on the planet’s surface, now’s the time to tell us.”
.>>
Jason then looked at the captain. “I guess the only question left is do we put Ric back in the air or should we let him lead the away team?”

OOC: In short my fellow players, who wants to beam down?

Jason Harn, XO, apparently putting a lot more thought into this than is necessary

COS ch’zaolrirh

“We can hold the Olinski at range, and beam to the Dragoon, power up the Dragoon and beam down from her… beam back up to her as well. That should be keep the crew at large secure for now.”

Kolar

The Captain tossed the idea of himself beaming down. He wanted to but found no justifiable reason to do so. If he came under the influence of mind control the impact was greater to the safety of the crew than anyone else.

“I want to lead this team but given the circumstances I cannot. Balfor you are in charge of the team. Take the COS, Toro from Intel, The Doctor, and Gould plus two security officers in full tac gear. Commander Harn you go to the Dragoon with the engineering team. Get them motivated to get that ship going. We need it safe so we can get its crew onboard. Take Mirri with you upon her return in the shuttle. Ric and his team are to be cover patrol in the sky above. Lt. Primage if you are cleared get back to your bird or take the CIC. Whatever Ric thinks best. Communicate all of this to him. Our first mission is the safety of you all and the crew of the Dragoon. Second is help this planet if we can and it so desires. Any other questions?” Sid announced. Since only the CNS said he needed to stay everyone else in effect volunteered.

OOC: Obviously Harn could lead the team but he is always on the Away Team so I wanted to give someone else a chance. Im ok with changing this to Toro or Chi (COS) if Luke feels he does not have time to lead the party. However let me know quickly.

Sidney

OOC: I agree. When we beamed over to the Dragoon, Harn shot down everybody’s ideas. Who wants to play with a player like that? Until I can get Jason control his out of character control freakery I’m more than happy to let someone else lead the away team. In the meantime, I’d like to throw Ric’s name into the ring for leading the away team. He’s the highest ranking officer on the planet and he’s already down there.

R Smith AKA Jason Harn

OOC: Im around, but also a team player I can take any role.

“Well we have the dancers, I guess we need to head down to the dance floor.” Which was about as animated as the Bajorian got.

Kolar.

Xandra listed to the others and nodded. “I haven’t been cleared to pilot, but I can take Ric and we can use a small shuttle. There may be some that are loathe to beam on account of what’s happened. A shuttle on the surface may have a calming affect as well.” She looked to the others and was glad this was moving forward, and she was going to be part of it. Back seat, observer, wasn’t her comfort spot.

Xandra
Pilot

Ch’zaolrirh stood up as the briefing came to an end. Stepping towards the door he tapped his comm badge =^= Ch’zaolrirh to security, I need four sets of tac gear and two volunteers to join the away team. In addition to your phasers, bring some batons. I already have my own. =^=

With his orders in place, the Andorian stood silently and waited for the CSO to initiate their departure.

COS Ch’zaolrirh

OOC: OK with R’s thinking and mine lets do this.

Ric has the Incident Command control of the Away Team and Balfor has the Operational control. That means Ric can be in his craft or on the ground and call the big decisions.

While the CSO gives individual commands to the Away Team.

Harn is the de facto CO of the Dragoon and works to get it operational and even battle ready if need be.

The Captain is on the Olinski just out of range of trouble and overrides any call he disagrees with but for the most part stays out of it.

Primage has had enough vacation for medical reasons. Get back in the fight. Everyone else you should already have your roles on the Away Team or Flight orders.

Sidney

“I guess that’s everything, are we dismissed sir?” Jason asked.

Jason Harn, XO attempting to get the lead out without forgetting protocol.

OOC Just to be clear a large group is beaming to the Dragoon and then the away team is beaming from there.

Luke

OOC: Okie-dokie. Good thing we’ve got more than one transporter room.

IC: “Dismissed,” Sidney said. “Go out and learn things.”

Ch’zaolrirh looked back at the captain for a moment. ‘Go out and learn things’? Was the captain inebriated… He shook his head. Of course not.

“Okay, everyone,” Jason said while rising from his seat. “Time to get back to work. Gould, I guess you’re with me,” he added of handedly before heading for the door.

Jason Harn, XO, ending the conference room scene so we can move the story along
