“Hey Stephanie.” Trevor said as he re-approached the girl. “Do you remember where you saw your parents last?” He asked. The Lieutenant moved to the right of the bed so the doctor had more room to work.

Doctor Clint started with the noninvasive procedures first, using a small hand held scanner to check her for obvious maladies.

Doctor Clint, M.D.

Clint’s reading showed that the girl was slightly malnourished. There were signs of being exposed to the elements but nothing life threatening. What was interesting was that the girl had an auditory implant.

“They were acting strange once the sound started,” said Stephanie. “I just followed them because I didn’t want to be alone on the ship. On the planet, they went about doing things like collecting wood for building houses and lighting fires. Just before you came, after those metal emitters were destroyed, my parents recognised me and then shoved a commbadge to my hands and brought me to hide. Mom told me to hide until Starfleet arrived. I was not to come out no matter what I heard was happening.

There was a lot of shouting and I was very frightened. Then Trevor came and I recognised the uniform he wore. Mom and Dad had changed to strange clothes after we arrived at the planet.”

Mind Control? The Counselor thought to himself as Stephanie spoke about the sound and the way her parents were acting, and how they seemed to snap out of it once the emitters were destroyed. This was definitely something the Captain would need to know before the team left for the surface.

“Are you saying your parents didn’t recognize you from the time they heard the sound, until we destroyed the emitters?” Trevor asked to confirm what he had heard. The Lieutenant also noted to have Stephanie describe the clothing later on.

“Yes, they did not answer when I called to them, like they did not recognise me,” replied Stephanie, “Strange though, they knew exactly where I was once the sound stopped.”

The Doctor set down the instrument he was using and picked up a second one. This time he made an intense scan of her ear in order to identify the make and model of Stephanie’s auditory implant. Now that the girl seemed to confirm that sound was the weapon used to override people’s will, perhaps the technology in her implant could be used to create protective gear for the search parties to use when they beamed down. Of course, it was possible that it was the way the implant was connected to her nervous system that created the immunity. Either way, once Clint figured out how they did it he could figure out how the Olinski’s crew could resist it.

Doctor Clint, M.D.

The doctor discovered that the child’s auditory nerves were damaged by some past accident. The auditory implant was not merely replacing the nerves but was translating the sound into electrical impulses that stimulated the brain. In other words, the implant took the sounds and translated them into meaningful nerve messages. Whatever did not have meaning was simply interpreted as sound. The microwaves that had somehow changed the behaviour of the people were not effective because the implant did not perceive it and the sound that accompanied it was simply a sound.

“One sec, Stephanie.” The Counselor said as he stepped to the side, giving himself some distance to call the Bridge.

=^=Captain, it appears there is a weapon that is capable of using mind control.=^= Trevor said as he took a glance at the girl sitting on the bio bed. =^= Stephanie, confirmed that everyone started acting strange when they heard a certain sound, and that the destruction of the emitters will also turn off the mind control.=^=

CNS

=^=The question is then if the emitters are down in the danger past or do they have smaller units of the same? Something we can only know if they get down there. Anyway to block it?=^=

OOC: Note: Stephanie’s answer regarding her parents were very significant as are the experiences of Lt. Primage who knew what was happening but could not control her hands. I believe she did explain it, did she not?

GM

OOC: It sounds like rather than “mind control” we’re talking “body control.” The subject seems to know exactly what’s happening but can’t do anything but go along for the ride. The vibrations from the microwave emitters seem to cause this but will hearing protection be enough or could the vibrations affect the aural nerves by entering from the spine?

Jason Harn, XO

OOC: That’s it. If the microwaves did not use the auditory nerves, then Stephanie would be affected, right? So …?

GM

After Trevor had finished his report to the bridge Doctor Clint walked up beside him. “While examining our patient here I discovered that she had surgery in the past,” he informed the counselor quietly. “Her auditory nerves have been replaced by an auditory implant that translates vibrations into electrical impulses that are passed on to the brain. That’s why the microwave attack had no effect on her. When the microwaves set up those mind control vibrations in her inner ear her implant simply interpreted them as sound. You might say something was lost in the translation. I suppose we could get hearing protection for the landing party, special earplugs that have transceivers that link with the combadges. That way they’ll still be able to hear and communicate as long as their combadges are working.”

Doctor Clint, M.D.

The Counselor looked over at Stephanie and sighed. “She sure has been through a lot.” Trevor said quietly to himself, out of earshot of the young girl. Lieutenant Michaels waited for the Captain’s response before continuing on with Stephanie. Hopefully, he’d be able to take her to the lounge for ice cream before meeting up with the Captain.
