I don’t know, you said that you felt controlled.” He looked about. “Have you ever felt that way before. Was it the same time of day, same place, interacting with the same people.” He gestured to himself and the crew of the Dragoon. “We are new here. So we don’t know what’s different. Its all different to us, but you have been here for years, set down roots and family.”

“Yes,” said the man. “My grandfather said that he was from the stars but we did not believe him,” he said with a nervous laugh. “Our Deity has been gracious towards us, so long as we obeyed the rules. We felt our bodies not moving to how we wanted once these …” he pointed to the Dragoon’s crew, “came to our parts. We have heard tell from other villages that sometimes our Deity would stop anyone who would do something against the August Law. These people would lose control of themselves.”

GM

“I find this interesting, Can you tell me all of August Laws, your deity and we would love to talk about the last visitors who claimed to come from the stars.”

The COS listened to the conversation intently. He had read enough mission reports to know that the local “deity” was likely acting in bad faith.

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“There is a village about ten kilometres from our own, the last time we met, about three months ago, one of the villagers shared this story with us. One of their young men fell in love with a visitor and did something terrible. He searched the belongings of the visitor. Number seven of the August Laws prohibit the touching of other people’s possessions without permission.”

GM

“That is curious to us, can you give us directions… and also a run down of these August Laws… I’d rather not break one without knowing it.”

“Perhaps we should get someone to go with you,” said the man who was speaking. He looked unsure at first but when he saw the food that had arrived, his eyes lit up. He thought that these people might be kinder to them if he became helpful.

“Chattwan!” he called. A boy that looked like a teenager ran up. “Please bring these visitors to Minvillage to see their village chief. As you go along, recite to them the August Laws.”

As tensions began to subside, Ric began to focus on Xandra. Some of her comments were. . confusing, and . . .out of place.

=^= Kolar, it appears you have the situation in hand. I’m sending Red Squad to recon that village site. I’m heading back to the Olinksi.=^=

He switched comm channels. =^=Apex, take Red Squad and recon that village. I’m transmitting photos of the Dragoons crew to you. See if you can any recognition of any of the crew. Copy?=^=

A minute or two of silence was observed and then Lt. Banner came over the intercom, “Yes, sir, Red Squad is on it. By the way, I am feeling much better now. That stupid virus I had seems to be gone and I have (again) be cleared to fly.”

As he powered down the Ranger’s weapons, he said to Xandra, “Sehlat take us back to the Olinski. I want to monitor things from CIC.”

Of course, that wasn’t the only reason he wanted to go back. Xandra was NOT okay to be back in the field yet. He had some butt to be chewing on. It was either the person in sickbay that HAD cleared her for duty, or, she had lied about being cleared for duty. Hopefully, it was the former. The CAG would feel much better about giving a dressing down to a medic than he would to her.

“Take us home, Sehlat.”

Xandra began the functions to remove them from the planet but there was a frown on her face. She had been close enough to Ric, for long enough, that something was bothering him. She also knew him well enough not to ask. If he wanted to share, he would. “Yes, Sir.” She tapped the comm, =^=Sehlat to Olinski, Ricochet and myself heading back.=^= She glanced back at him to be sure no one else was joining them.

With no further instructions, her hands automatically did what was necessary to get them off the planet and headed back to the ship. Whatever was bugging him, she hoped it wasn’t serious.

Whatever else had fogged her mind, her flying skills were certainly not in question. She did everything by the book, to her excellent usual skill level and without hesitation or even a ruffle of her brow.

At that moment the discussion was interrupted by a transmission from the Dragoon. “Attention Olinski and away team,” Jason announced in his ‘stage voice’. “We’re detecting a massive energy surge coming from a hill approximately one kilometer from where the fighters are now. The energy is channeling to the destroyed emitters and we don’t know what’s going to happen when it gets there. We’re sending exact coordinates now. Over.”

Jason Harn, XO

As the transmission came in, Ch’zaolrirh took a look at the new data coming in from the Olinski’s bridge. His antennae peaked as he turned to Kolar, “Mr. Kolar, it looks like the energy surge is coming from within the hill itself. I suggest that we make our way there now and investigate.”

“We might have two directions…” He nodded.

The COS knew that it was a risky proposition, but the risk of those local emitters coming back on line worried him far more.

Strapping his tricorder over his shoulder, he made one more suggestion. “From a security standpoint, I’d also suggest that we get the members of the Dragoon crew off planet for further questioning. Things might become unstable depending on the path that energy takes.”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“Ch’zaolrirh, good calls, contact the Dragoon. Have them brought to a safe location and have the questioning continue with an officer there.”

=^=CAG this is Balfor, we need eyes on… hill to our southwest… observe and report. I don’t want those emitters coming back on line…=^=

Balfor Kolar.

Chattwan waited patiently for Balfor to finish what he was doing so that he could start his recitation whilst bringing them to Minvillage.

GM

While trying to follow Balfor’s orders, Ch’zaolrirh was greeted with comm chatter. =^=Olinski, Dragoon, you’re not going to believe what I have eyes on,=^= the masculine voice of Lieutenant (junior grade) Ael Khev, callsign Apex reported. =^=Automated repair drones. They seem to be equipped with replicators. New parts are being replicated real fast. Should we take these things out?=^=

=^=Acknowledged Apex,=^= Jason’s voice replied. =^=Harn to Olinski, requesting permission to train the Dragoon’s phasers on the emitters. It’s not a permanent fix but it will buy us some time.=^=

Jason Harn, XO, posting far too early

=^=Commander, If I may suggest, fire one volley off target, before targeting the emitters. That should give the repair drones time to retreat to their base. The Red Squadron can follow them home, destroy the repair hanger - Then we’ll follow on foot and investigate the home base. =^=

Balfor cSO

Ric broke into the conversation from CIC. =^=Harn, I concur with Kolar. Whoever is running this show has got an underground base and we need to get access to it to put these mind-controlling zombie makers out of business. Apex, do you copy on those orders?”

Ricochet (CAG)
