Xandra stepped from the lift and headed for the CIC. She never looked back to see if one or both of the Councilors were following her. They didn’t know what was wrong, or even if there was something wrong. She felt fine, was clear headed, had even run over the specs of every ship she had ever flown in her life. There was no mixing it up n her head, no crossing of the lines. No, it had to be the planet and whatever had happened during her blackout.

Stepping into the CIC she listened as Ric gave his orders to those on the away mission and stepped up beside him. “Permission to take a shuttle to the surface, Sir.” Her voice was confident and sure, though Ric would see the slight twitch of her fingers and the pulse racing at her neck as she stood toe to toe with the man who had permission to ground her for the rest of her career.

Ric caught the movement out of the corner of his eye as the trio entered CIC. “You want to what, Lt?”

“I believe the trouble I had was linked to the surface. I feel fine and even the Councilors can’t decide if there is anything wrong.” She wasn’t making excuses, merely stating facts. It was coming out as calculated facts and the emotions were, for the most part, being kept at bay. “I want to return to the surface, with whatever escort you deem necessary. And I will remain away from the mission so there is no need to worry about me putting anyone in jeapordy. One of two things will happen… nothing, in which case, you choose whatever measure of punishment, or medical care, or censorship you deem necessary. Or,” she took a deep breath,” returning to the surface and being subjected to whatever residue is left from those microwave emitters that have been used for years, will cause another reaction. If it’s the latter, then we know that whoever we rescue or bring up here from down there will need treatment. And we will know not to let them go back to the surface again… that includes me.”

She wasn’t sure if her assumption was right or not, but it was the only equation variable they hadn’t accounted for.

Xandra
Pilot (?)

The CAG had to hand it to her. She definitely sounded as if she had her confidence back. His gaze went from Doolittle and Sicnlair and back to Xandra a few times. He was upset that she disregarded his orders, but knew how badly she wanted to get back into the mix. “Did I not give you an order to stay in Sickbay until I could talk to one these doctors to figure out what’s wrong?”

Ric shook his head and sighed. He knew he was fighting a losing battle unless he could get some backing from the counselor or doctor. He looked at Doolittle and Sinclair again and asked, “Was this your idea or hers?”

“Actually the Captain.” Doolittle said. “Technically I think she should stay grounded but I cannot put that 100% on a diagnosis yet.”
“And you’re okay with it?’

“If I go with her then Yes.” Doolittle added.

Xandra looked at Ric. To her credit, she wasn’t all doey eyed and pleading. “I will remain away from the rescue and away teams. And I give my word to only stay long enough to see if I am affected again. I will see to the ship being on auto return in case something happens and promise to come back either once I prove one way or the other the planet affects me,” she nodded over her shoulder, “or the Doc orders me back.”

She had thought it thru. It seemed a sound request and a safe one, in her mind, since she wouldn’t be assisting or putting anyone else in danger. Her only fear, and the reason her pulse was slightly elevated, was a fear she was right. As well as equal fear she was wrong…

Xandra
Grounded pilot

Ric wasn’t sure how to respond. He was worried about her, as well, as the other pilot’s in the wing. They were at risk every time they climbed into the cockpit. If Xandra was still feeling the effects of the wave, he was putting them at even more risk. He had even more concerns for her personally. He loved her and the fact that was controlled scared the hell out of him. He knew she was an excellent pilot, tactician, and squad leader. Her skills were never a question with him when she climbed in the cockpit. Ric had every confidence Xandra would return from every mission, no matter the danger–she would come out on top.

But, this was different. She wasn’t in control, and from an outside influence, nonetheless. Still, if he didn’t let her put her theory to the test, it could further damage her, at this moment, fragile confidence. She could easily fall into the trap that Ric has lost confidence in her as well.

Finally, after long, tense, moments, Ric replied, “Fine, but I’m going along. I was there when this happened before. I know what to look for, Doc. No arguments, Lt. I am riding shotgun. I want to get you back on top as soon as possible. Understood?”

A very slight grin passed over his face as he wondered if Xandra would catch the Freudian slip.

Ricochet (CAG)

Doolittle was to say the least a little nervous. He had not been in a hot zone or whatever they called it, before. He was now going in with his patient. However this was like a test tube. He might never get a chance to study not only this patient in a live scenario but probably others as well.
