Toki reminded Ael of his oldest nephew, always curious. “Yes. And it’s my job to tell that one” he pointed at his fighter “where to go. The other ones,” he indicated a drone “get their orders from someplace else. Hey, when the noise was still loud, and you were still going to school, what were you learning?”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“We learn to count and read and arithmetic,” said Toki still distracted by the flight machines. “We also lean about the plants we grow and the animals we eat. As we grow older, the teacher said we would learn how to build houses.”

GM

The COS began plotting their next course of action. If the locals were unaware of these tunnels it was best to keep it that way. He tapped his badge.

=^= COS to Olinski. The locals may not be aware of these tunnels. We have discerned that they were built using material from the planet itself, but the builder is unknown. At this time, I don’t believe there would be any benefit heading deeper into the network. Mr. Kolar has already gained access to the network and there are no life signs down there. At present a native child has entered the cave. We are going to return him to his village and report back =^=

Ch’zaolrirh looked back at Papa Bear, “I think its time to get the fighter wing out of here before more visitors show up. I would check with the CAG to see if you ought to maintain a patrol. I’d like to take Ael along to the village. He seems to have made a connection with the boy. Any ideas on what to do with his bird in the meantime?

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“Da,” Papa Bear replied, “I will have Olinski transport down other pilot to fly bird back for Apex. Then contact Ricochet to orders.’

Ael glanced back at Ch’zaolrirh. He turned back to the boy. “Tell me one last thing Toki. Why did the noise stopping mean you and the other kids didn’t have to go to school anymore? Back where I grew up, a place called Ch’Rihan, we went to school every day, conditions didn’t matter.” He smiled. “Teachers were strict like that.”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“Oh. We went to school like before. I saw things flying that I didn’t see before. I wanted to know what they are. So I left quietly. Praa saw me; Praa’s my friend that sits closest to me. Praa’s scared of the teacher and didn’t come out when I did. I don’t know why I suddenly was brave enough to run away from school but before, I was not that brave.”

GM

As the Russian made his way back to his bird, he received orders from the CAG for Banner and himself to continue to patrol the planet. The next call was to the ship and a moment later there was another pilot materializing next to Apex’ fighter.

Papa bear climbed into the cockpit and fired his bird up. =^=Red three (Banner), as per Ricochet’s orders, you and I, we continue to patrol planet, take out any repair drones we find, da?=^=

Papa Bear (pilot)

Responding to the order given, Banner exclaimed, “Alright....give me something to shoot at and I will show you liberty!” It was clear that Banner wanted to ‘fire his weapons’ at whatever needed to be blown up.

As the fighters left, Ael stopped asking Toki questions for a moment to let him enjoy the view. “We noticed something about the noise. It makes people do what they’re supposed to. So when it stopped, the real you came out. An explorer.” He looked at the remaining landing party. “Hey, these are my teammates.” He pointed to each in turn, introducing them by name without rank. He stood up. He whispered to Ch’Zaolrirh “Let’s keep this non-military.” He looked down at the boy and said “Toki, you think you could take us to your village?”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“Ok. They will be excited to have visitors like you!” he said excitedly.

Ch’zaolrirh knelt down for a moment and waved at the boy. He matched the motion of his hand with a wave of his antennae. It was a silly party trick, but it generally went over well with other species, “Hi there Toki, you can just call me Thell. Its my job to keep people safe.”

The COS allowed the boy to get acclimated to the group. They would leave the cavern on his mark.

COS Ch’zaolrirh

Toki’s eyes widened with Ch’zaolrirh’s wave. “Cool!’ he said. “Hi Threll. Is it dangerous in here?”

GM

The Andorian nodded, “Without any adults it can be… but it is mostly empty anyway. You’d have a better time exploring outside.” He stood up and put his hand out. “It looks like you will have to lead the way to the village!”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

Toki showed a little disappointment that he had to leave the cavern. However, he was not about to disappoint these cool people who could fly in their vehicles. He led them out of the cavern and about another 40 minutes later, reached his village.

“Toki!,” shouted an elderly lady from afar. “Where have you been? You should have been in school! Where did you go?! What did you do?!”

Her shouts caught the attention of a few adults who looked up to see Ch’zaolrirh.

“Who might you be?” one of them asked quietly. He seemed nervous and anxious. “Did you find Toki? We are grateful for your help.” His voice told the COS that he was afraid.

GM

“We’re scientists. Explorers.” Ael said. Close enough to the truth, given Starfleet’s mission statement. “We were exploring a cave tunnel nearby. Toki wandered in, we talked to him, how he happened to be in such a place, if he was ok, where he came from, all of that. And then we thought he’d be safer if he had an escort home. Enough adventure for one day.” He looked at Toki. “Which house is yours?”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

R Smith AKA Jason Harn

Toki pointed out in the direction where the elderly lady was. The man who spoke looked relieved, “I am sorry. With all the strange things that has been happening, we cannot be too careful.”

GM

“Go on home Toki. Never stop exploring though, but try to stay safe.” Ael said. “That’s completely understandable. A village like this, you can never be too safe. Especially with the children. I’m Ael Khev, by the way.” The Romulan smiled.

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“I am Doyle. My father is the head of this village. He is leading a team, looking for Toki. We imagined that Toki got distracted on the way back from school. So we decided to start there.” As he said this, he pointed in the direction that was on the opposite side of the village. “Three villages around here go to the school in the fourth village,” he explained. “It is about forty minutes distance.”

GM

The COS nodded as the man spoke. “Is the school open today?” The Andorian put a puzzled look on. He didn’t want to confront the man, but he also wanted to figure out if anyone on this planet was capable of telling the truth, “Toki seemed to think it wasn’t?”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“Why yes,” said Doyle. “The children get a break from school every 9 days. Their next break is in four days time. I wonder why the boy was not truthful?”

GM

“He mentioned a continuous noise. And when it stopped, his need to stick to regimented routine went away.” Ael paused and chuckled a little. “Normally that would sound like the… tall tale of a child trying to stay out of trouble. However, being explorers ourselves, we encountered something similar not far from where we encountered Toki. And it had an effect on one of our own, she lost her free will. Couldn’t act on her own impulses, but was seemingly almost controlled. It’s possible Toki’s inner explorer only now had the chance to come out.”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

=^= Captain to Away Team. Can we call the situation under control or are there still active threats?=^=

Parker CO

“Control?” asked the man. “I don’t really know. I don’t know about the rest, but as soon as the noised disappeared I felt I could think clearer but I just went about my daily chores as per normal. Chores needed to be done and we just had to do them.”

GM

“That’s almost exactly what Toki said. At least about thinking clearer.” Ael turned to Ch’zaolrirh. He whispered “You’re security. Why don’t you go somewhere a little farther from the prime directive and update the Captain? I’ll keep them busy.” Looking back now to the natives, he asked “So, you feel you can think more freely. But you have to sustain your way of life and this way has worked so far, why change it? And all this came about when the noises stopped? Does anyone know when the noises started?”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

The man thought for a while and said, “Now that you ask, I don’t know. Until it stopped I didn’t know it was there … Strange, don’t your think ?”

GM

The Andorian walked away from the group, leaving Callahan with Ael. He tapped his comm badge:

=^= No threats remain. I am uploading scans of the drones we encountered now. It looks like they were built using raw materials from the planet. We can also confirm that the locals were affected by the microwaves as well… they are describing it as having clouded their minds. We are having a rough time pulling any real answers out of them… perhaps its task better suited for the ship’s counselor =^=

He glanced back at the group. It was probably time to return to the Olinski…

COS Ch’zaolrirh

=^=Captain to Ch’zaolrirh affirmed. The CNS will be sent down. These survivors may be Iconian or descended from them. We have to tread carefully. If they are open to it we can send down teams to assist them in anyway we can. Our main goal is to be sure if they were to remain that no threats exist other than those nature might throw their way.=^=

Parker CO

A puzzled look washed over the Andorian’s face… Iconians?

=^= Understood =^=

Walking back to the group, he caught the tail end of the man’s question, “I don’t mean to interrupt, but perhaps there are others in your village who remember. I am working on getting a few more members of our team here. They can assist with making sure everyone is safe and accounted for now that the noise has stopped.”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

The Counselor had beamed down a few meters from the away team, and just made his way over to the group. “Ch’Zaolrirh, what are we working with?” Lieutenant Michaels asked, hoping to get a quick report before he went to work.

Trevor wasn’t exactly sure what he’d find out from those in the village, but he was known to be able to get the answers he needed.

CNS

Ch’zaolrirh looked back at the villager “That was quicker than I thought.” Looking back at the counselor he decided that it was probably best to brief him out in the open to gain some trust with the villagers, “Mr. Michaels its good to see you. This is Doyle, he and his son Toki live in this village. The villagers were just telling us that they were affected by the same hum that our pilots encountered in space. Doyle describes it as having clouded his mind. We were just trying to help the villagers figure out its origin and account for any missing persons.”

COS Ch’zaolrirh

“Though I wonder if it goes back generations. That’s why the cave tunnel was empty All that was left was automated defences. Mr Michaels May be able to help you remember, or remember a story you were told in your youth.”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“Stories?” Doyle repeated. “There is an ancient story that is part of our annual village festival. It is so old that no one has any idea how long it was ago. The gods came from the sky to sow seeds on the earth. Some of the seeds became the plants, some became the animals and some became people. The gods stayed for one age to be sure that the plan they had for the world would continue. At the end of that age, the gods became part of the world and continue to help us to survive in our world. They guide us in our planting, our rearing of animals for food, and in the multiplication of the the peoples.”

GM

Trevor tried to hide a slight smile at the thought of a god guiding someone in the art of procreation. “Is there anything else said in this story?” The Counselor asked. “Or any story related to this?” Lieutenant Michaels could conclude that the gods could be extraterrestrial beings which guided the creation of life on Earth. Had this been said 200 years ago, it wouldn’t be taken so seriously… but obviously things have changed in the past 200 or so years.

CNS

=^=Apex, there is beingk number of lifeforms to east of your 20. Am not sure if they are friendlies or hostiles. We are going in for a closer look and maybe flush them out.=^=

Papa Bear (pilot)

=/\=Copy.=/\= Ael replied. “Looking to the villagers, he asked “Where exactly is the search party you sent for Toki?”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“They’re still out,” replied Doyle. “I have sent someone to try to get the message to them that Toki has been found.”

GM

“Do you know what direction they would be in? East? West?” Ael asked.

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

“They searched the route between the village and the school,” replied Doyle. As he was speaking, looked beyond the officer and waved his arm. “I believe that they are back now,” he said.

GM

Ch’zaolrirh turned around and started counting. He wanted to make sure that the fighter squad had picked up the same group. As he counted, one of his hands moved slyly towards his phaser just in case something was amiss.

COS Ch’zaolrir

There were about 15 people who returned. After some talking, Doyle brought two of the party to meet Ael.

“This is Ael Khev,” Doyle introduced the Starfleet officer. It was obvious that they had never seen a Romulan with pointed ears before. However, like Doyle, they were polite and did not show too much fear. “He and his friends brought Toki back.” Then turning to Ael, he said. “These are Roland and Nicholas. They led the search for Toki.”

GM

“It is a pleasure to meet you.” Ael said. “I apologise for asking a question of you so immediately, but do you know of another group out there to the east? Some of our party saw… people. They weren’t sure who it was.”

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex
