“So… Doctor Doolittle,” Jason began as he idly wondered if either of his 24th century shipmates had ever heard of the fictitious Doctor Doolittle from 20th century literature. That character was ancient when Jason was a boy, so it was unlikely that anybody aboard the Olinski had heard of the character in this century. “I understand you came aboard during our little pit stop at Deep Space Five. Where did you serve before that?”

Jason Harn, XO, professional fossil

“Well I received my education at Harvard. From there I decided to take a road less traveled approach and joined SF in order to really practice psychiatric and medical care in challenging environments. I was at the several Earth bound post for a little while. Then SF Academy in San Francisco for a year. My first non Earth posting was on the science research vessel USS Hubble. A sought after posting that I was lucky to get. From there on the USS Winfield Scott and now the Olinski.” Doolittle said.

Doolittle

“The Winfield Scott, that’s Captain Rab’s ship isn’t it?” Jason nodded. “I knew him when he was still lieutenant commander.” He glanced at Michael. “Tell me Mike, did you ever know Captain Rab?”

OOC: This is a chance to fill in some details on Gould’s character page.

Jason Harn, XO

“I was never assigned to the Winfield Scott, but I was at Earth Spacedock for about a year. I remember she came in, in pretty bad shape. I was Chief of my repair unit, so I got to know Captain Rab a little while we fixed up his ship. He had some ideas for improvements that could be made along the way.”

Mirri walked into the lounge and took in those that were there as well. She stopped at the bar and ordered a klingon coffee and took a seat leaning back in the chair and looking over some of the star charts that she had uploaded to her data padd. She was always looking for ways to challenge herself when it came to getting the Olinski out of tight spots.

Michael chuckled a little. “Commander, I have to say, you are the only person in the galaxy that calls me Mike. Even my best friends have always called me Michael. Reminds me of that old earth movie, The Producers. When Leo gives his whole speech about Max Bialystok being the only person ever to call him Leo. ‘Even in my kindergarten class they always called me Bloom.’” Michael looked down at his drink. “So I watched a lot of classic cinema when I was young.”

The waiter returned with a wine glass of Napa Valley Red and served the doctor.

Kenson

Jason blinked in surprise. “I didn’t think anybody else on this ship knew what movie was. And if you don’t like being called ‘Mike’, just let me know,” he said as he reached up to his collar and removed the three rank pips that were there. “I’m just ‘Jason’ or ‘Harn’ right now. Commander Harn won’t be back until I finish my dinner,” he winked.

“You’d be surprised what sticks around. I know ‘holovids’ are more popular, but there’s something about movies…”

“Yeah sometimes those holovids cam be >too< real,” Jason agreed.

Inside, Jason was glad that Michael had changed the subject. Asking his shipmates to share their personal histories was risky for someone who wanted to keep his past before the Dominion War private. The last thing that he wanted was for everybody to know that Jason Harn was the oldest man on the ship, chronologically as well as biologically. Unfortunately, keeping one’s past a secret kept one from ever getting close enough to anyone else to know someone really well, which was fine for most first officers but constraining for a social animal like Jason. Sooner or later he’d have to find a circle of friends aboard this ship he could be honest with so he could bore them with tales of the Earth Romulan War and his life from the 22nd century.

But he’d have to feel things out and find out who wouldn’t treat him as a specimen or a historical artifact first. Michael seemed like a good candidate. He didn’t seem to have much of a social life and should be able to keep a secret. And as for Doolittle, well, it was impossible to keep a secret from someone with access to your medical records. If he didn’t know right now he soon would.

Jason Harn, XO

The scent of steaks just off the grill wafted in the group’s direction. The waiter set down the steaks that they had ordered. “Enjoy your meal, sirs!” the waited said.

Kenson

Jason thanked the waiter as he cut into his steak.

“As to Mike… I don’t really have a problem with it so much as it’s a shock to the system.”

-Michael Gould

Doolittle smelled the bouquet of the wine. Swirled it in his glass and then took a sip. He seemed to approve. As the steaks arrived he remarked.

“Gentlemen you should try this with the wine. Adds to the experience.”

Doolittle

“Absolutely,” Jason nodded. “In particular, red wine goes with steak and they each release its each other’s flavor. I heard somewhere that a glass of wine with steak releases antioxidants, or maybe they reduce antioxidants,” he corrected himself, “something about antioxidants, that’s all I remember. Anyway, a glass of wine with steak is supposed to be good for you.”

Jason Harn, XO

Michael agreed. “It would be rude of me to turn down free, I mean wine offered by a colleague.” He joked. “So you’re the late tour commander,” He pointed to Harn “I played with Iconian tech and everybody and their brother wants a report on it.” He turned to Doolittle. “So what keeps you up to all hours?”

-Michael Gould
