OOC: This is is a small prologue for the next sim …
IC:

“Your Honour,” said Commander Werex, “I would like to nominate my own counsel.”

“This is your right,” said Vice Admiral Linus Bell, who was the main judge in the courtroom.

“I would like Captain Sidney Parker to be my counsel.”

Checking his PaDD, the Admiral took a few moments before looking up. “He was your Department Head in the past. He has not been in contact with you for the last seven years, would he even accept being your counsel?”

“I believe he will,” Werex answered. “Despite not being a Tellarite, he was able to understand me and was impartial in his dealings with me. I believe he would be someone who would be able to represent my interests in this case.”

“Granted,” said the Admiral. “However, he was never part of the judicial arm of Starfleet. Your present counsel would be appointed to assist him. Is that satisfactory?”

“Yes,” said the Tellarite.

“If he refuses, then you will only have your original counsel to defend you,” stated the Admiral.

“I understand, sir,” said Werex.

“Court is adjourned until Stardate 19110.0. That would give you enough time to make arrangements for Captain Sidney Parker to arrive for the proceedings.”

When Sidney did receive the notice he was, to say it lightly, shocked. He was shocked that Werex was in this trouble. He was shocked that Werex was wanting him to represent him. He was even more shocked he was even considering it. When he was Werez DH he remembered him as a fine officer and dedicated. He would not and did not want to believe the charges against the man. Some would say 7 years is a long time and people changed. Sid knew this was true but not with Werez. He had enjoyed himself at the Black and White Ball and even found himself wanting a small break but not this. Still if Werez was calling him then he had thought it out. He needed his old DH and if you were not willing to be there for old crew members then what was all that bull you told them over and over all those years ago. Werez was not a close friend and this also troubled him and made him curious. He was a good subordinate and a loyal SF officer but not his best mate. It took him a few hours but he made a decision and called for Cmd Harn to his quarters.

Moments later the door chime rang. After Sidney told him the enter the door slid open and Commander Jason Harn entered the room. Jason Harn was tall and broad shouldered, with a muscular build. His light brown hair was parted in the middle, exposing a high forehead. His high cheekbones and cleft chin made him attractive to most anthropomorphic species, and his pinkish white skin indicatedd that his ancestors hailed from lands close to the poles of his homeworld, in this case, Earth. “Yes Captain what is it?” Jason Harn and Captain Parker were on a first name basis. Parker called his first officer “Jason,” and Jason called his commanding officer “Captain”.

OOC: I’m tempted to change Emma Ripley from a counselor to a JAG lawyer (or judge) just so we can do the old “Meanwhile with Sidney” scenes when the two of us find it challenging to find something to post every three days.

“Jason I have an interesting development that though my own will impact you significantly.” He started.

“I have an old subordinate that is in real legal trouble with SF. He has asked me to defend him in court. It seems it is a drastic and serious situation. I have experience in this area in the past with some judicial hearings but frankly I think he needs someone he can trust to do this. As it is I have spoken to SF Command and Fleet Command and both are willing to let me take some time to do this. I explained that I had a very high level of confidence in handing you the ship for the next mission while I take on this challenge. Given your unique history I must admit I had to sell this to them but they agreed. Your history on this ship speaks for itself. So unless you can find an argument to not accept the role of Acting Captain you’re going to have it for the next mission. IN fact I plan on leaving in a few days.” He finished.

“Not a problem sir, that’s what I’m here for,” Jason winked. “I’ve done this before Skipper, I should be able to manage,” he assured him as he shared the old joke. “Now, the question is, who’s my acting XO? Who’s got seniority?” he asked as he stroked his manly chin and mentally reviewed the personnel files on the department heads.

Jason Harn, XO

“Kolar is the 2nd Officer. So if you choose to go around that structure you need to have a conversation with him first. Of course Ric has the rank as well but divisionally we keep him out of the Bridge command loop so he can concentrate on his own division. The Air Group is a whole command to itself with the pilots and support staff.” Sid advised Harn.

“That’s what I figured,” Jason grinned, “I just wondered if Ric wanted some experience being an XO in case he decided to go for the command of a starship himself someday. At my age, I can’t shake the instinct to hold the doors open sometimes.” Although he had spoken in a cheerful tone, inwardly Jason was groaning at his own admission of old age. He had finally reached an age where he was looking out for the careers of his subordinates rather than his own. It was the proper way to grow up as well as grow old gracefully but for some strange reason it still stung. Oh well. He couldn’t think of a better person to admit something like this to on the whole ship and Sidney of all people understood better than anybody. “Clear skies and fair winds, Captain,” he shrugged as he invoked a sailor’s blessing that was old when his grandfather was young.
