Ric acknowledged Xandra as she slid into her seat, then turned his attention back to the Romulan. “That’s great news, Ael I’m happy for you, and I’m happy to grant you a leave whenever your ready to take one and go see her. This thing with the Iconians is just about wrapped up, but I want to go through this debrief before I cut you loose. There are a few things that need to be taken care of first.”

Ricochet (CAG)

“Right. Well, if I remember right, every agency in the Federation is going to want a look at her. So I have time before I’ll get visitation rights.” Ael walked over into the briefing room. As he took his seat, he couldn’t help but think about what Lena’s future would be. She had no home, no money, and she was Romulan. But she did have family.

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

He was sure it probably hadn’t been easy for Ael to adjust to the Federation when he crossed the border, but Ric wanted to make sure he would do whatever was possible for his pilot to reconnect with his sister. But first things first: The mission debrief.

The CAG stepped to the podium and called for attention. He began running through the itemized list of mission points to bring to the attention to his air wing.

“Item 9: I’m sure y’all are aware that Lt. Primage was affected by the microwaves surrounding the planet. The results could have been disastrous, but thankfully, after observations from medical and the counselor, she’s been given the green light to fly again. It’s still unclear how it affected her to the degree that it did. With that being said, I am making it mandatory for every pilot, co-pilot, weapons tech, and flight engineers to get re-certified with a physical and psych eval that clears them for flight duty. This WILL be dome before anybody gets back in a bird. No arguments, no excuses! I will be subjecting myself to this evaluation as well. I’ve taken the liberty to schedule each and every one of you for these appoints. I repeat, you will not be flying until you are cleared. Any question?”

Ricochet (CAG)

Most of the squad were stifling groans and less than kind remarks. Ael remembered doing similarly unpopular things back in his commanding days. He chuckled a little as especially the younger pilots whined.

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex

Despite having slid into a back seat in the room, Xandra still managed to grab a look from nearly every pilot and mech in the room a the announcement of the mandatory physical and psych evals. Her already somber face turned red and she waited till Ric made sure there were no more questions. Once he claimed they were done, the young woman rose and swiftly left thru the back door. Most would go thru the front doors since they were closer to the lift that would take them to quarters, drinks, or more fun aspects of being on the ship. The back door was closer to the halls near the outer hull and more of a circuitous route to other places.

Figuring no one would follow her direction, she let the door slide shut behind her then leaned on the wall to the right of the door and shook her head. Why had it affected her so much? Surely there were others who had flown as close as her. Why had no one else lost themselves to that extent? It occurred to her that she had dinner plans with Ric tonight and he would surely wonder as well. The question on her mind now was, how would she respond?

Xandra
Pilot

Ric was a bit dismayed as he saw Xandra slip out of the briefing room. His comments weren’t made to embarrass her. She had passed all the tgests the doctors and counselors had put her through with flying colors, yet was she still having self-doubts? Maybe there was some thing in her own body chemistry that made her more susceptible to the waves. Perhaps she had a higher ESPer rating than most humans? It was worth looking into.

“One more order of business to take care of,” Ric said to stifle the groans. “You may have noticed the absence of Lt. Cmdr. Vance “Goldilocks” Golding at this briefing. As off 0600 hours, he was on his way to the USS Annapolis to take on the position of the Annie’s CAG as well as a promotion to full commander. He apologies for not offering goodbyes, but you know how he hates having his own horn tooted. I wished him best of luck from all of us. With that being said, I need to fill the opening he left as Red Squad Leader. After his performance, on the last mission, as well as his experience, I can’t think of anyone more deserving of that position than now FULL Lt. Ael “Apex” Khev.”

A round of applause went up from the pilots as Ric motioned to Apex to come up to the stage. From behind the podium, Ric withdrew a small box. When opened, it contained a set of full Lt. pips that would be attached to the collar new leader of Red Squad.

Ricochet (CAG)

Ael stepped up and accepted his new pips. After feeling the metal of his full second pip for a second, he extended his hand to Ric. “Commander. Thank you.”

Ric shook Ael’s and smiled.

“I barely got into Starfleet because of where I was born. I had to take the piloting qualification tests. The instructor told me that ‘someone like me would be lucky to make junior grade.’ Well, with the support of a great squad, I did that and more. Red Squad, it’s an honour.”

-Lt Ael Khev, Apex (Red Squad Leader)

“You’ve proved yourself time and time again, not only as a competent and capable pilot, but you stepped up a took the lead when you needed. I believe the wing, not just the squad respects you. And, you’ve proved yourself a loyal Starfleet officer.”

As the CAG snapped a salute to the now full Lt., he added, “You can be my wing man anytime.”

Ricochet (CAG)

After now Lt. Khev returned to his seat, Ric turned back to the microphone and addressed all the pilots once again.

“Sorry, one more thing. Once we return to the starbase, Captain Parker has issued an invitation for ALL personnel to attend a black tie affair while we have a short break. This has been a long standing tradition on the Olinski that has slipped awa in the past few years. The Captain wants to reinstate this event. You all have down time, so I expect everyone to make an appearance.”

He gazed around the briefing room gauging responses before finishing with, “If there’s nothing else, you’re dismissed.”
