“First Officer’s Log, Stardate 58060.27. The USS Brain A. Olinski is entering the Belogi system in order to search for the whereabouts of the USS Sierra. As a precaution we are slowing to one tenth impulse speed and letting Ric and his pilots fly ahead to determine if the ‘safe path’ through the system is as safe as its supposed to be.”

Jason Harn took his hand off the button on the armrest and gazed around the bridge, trying to go over anything he might have missed. He was perfectly aware that he probably overthinking things, but with lives on the line that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. As a matter of fact, he realized that there was one thing he had missed. “Mister Balfor, can you detect the Sierra’s neutrino trail?”

All starships left a trail of neutrinos behind them although the 24th century starship left such a small amount as to be almost negligible. Anything could erase the trail, from the gravity of nearby celestial bodies, to cosmic radiation, to a squadron of fighters being launched to search for subspace mines. And Ric’s squadron was literally seconds away from launching.

Jason Harn, aCO, wondering if he messed up

The science station was able to detect the neutrino trail. It ended in second of the planets closest to the star. It was a desert planet and had a maximum temperature of 47ºC at the equator and 15ºC at the poles. The axis of rotation was perpendicular to the revolutionary path.

Kolar looked up, “the second planet of the system. Its a hot one… max temp 47c. Wear something comfortable and hydrate.” He had the computer put a red line indicating the course of the ship, then adjusted for stellar drift. “Theoretically, that path should still be open… unless the mine field moves.” He scanned for a cloud of plasma. Engines using their impulse engines would burn fuel, the Federation uses the term plasma… other races use other names… what whatever the designation the remains of the solid fuel would be present if the mines moved on their own.

Ch’zaolrirh stood at the tactical station. The screen near his waist contained a star-fleet chart of the sector. The information provided by the Cardassians was laid in on top of it. Although it was his preference that the Olinski scout the safe path with probes before sending out the fighter squadron, it wasn’t his decision to make. He had given his recommendation, now all he could do was help carry out the mission.

As the COS of a carrier, the Andorian found himself in a tough position. Although he was responsible for the safety of the crew, his ability to protect the fighter wing was limited once they moved out of docking range. Coordination and communication helped, but ultimately the safety of the pilots were often in their own hands. As he awaited their launch, the COS ran a quick Level 5 diagnostic on the Olinski’s shields. Once the ship began to move in, he would need to be ready for anything.

The diagnostic would take a few minutes to complete. In the meantime, he tapped his comm badge =^= Mr. Callahan, I need you to work with the counselor to identify a secure block of quarters suitable for the passengers of the Sierra. I’m leaving the intake process in your hands. =^=

The sensors at the COS’s station still showed debris from the clearing of the mines. 95% were within the maps provided by the Cardassians.

=^=Lieutenant Michaels here, we have the entire marine’s quarters set aside for our intended guests, and we can use a few quarters from the mechanic’s wing as well Commander.=^= The Counselor called out to the XO’s personal comm.
