Michael’s torment continued as Emma brought their discussion to the worst, most cringe inducing topic of all time: She began to talk about her child. “My daughter has got me into gothic holonovels,” the lanky woman continued. “There’s nothing that makes you appreciate the present than reflecting on how dreary things were in the past.”

“Really?” He was surprised that little paper wasn’t frequently read and he had never been asked about it. He remembered the Doctor that edited it calling it the most boring thing that had ever been committed to paper. “I’m a Earth Scientist by training… biology, geology, agriculture and the like. I thought the wormhole being a natural stellar phenomena would have similarities to things more common in the earth that in space.” He shrugged a little sheepishly. “I used the correlation of radiation spikes common to wormholes to the Fibonacci sequence and its similarity to the Tellarite grain worm. Needless to say, it is a little dense for a night time read.”

“Then I shall read it during the day,” Maya replied with perfect candor.

Kolar laughed out loud. It was only an average joke but it had double value coming from the Vulcan.

Kolar tilted his head as he took in the Vulcan a little more closely. “It is a little outside your field, Is there something that drew you to this particular topic?” He couldn’t imagine why Maya would be interested in wormholes. “You aren’t planning on using my theory to trigger a micro wormhole of your own?” It was his version of a science joke.

“I assure you that is not my intention,” the greenblooded physician assured him. “It is just that I have always found the wormhole phenomenon to be a very difficult concept to grasp,” Maya explained, “along with time travel.”

Jason grinned at the little Vulcan’s enthusiasm, well, enthusiasm for Maya at least. She was still speaking perfectly calm with her almost painful formality. But Jason recognized the gleam in her large hazel eyes as she peered at him with that blank catlike stare she affected. It was then that Jason noticed Mirri eating quietly by herself. Since Maya appeared to actually be able to handle this social occasion for once he decided to head over to the British helmswoman and see if she wanted company.

“Skip lunch?” he teased when he reached her table. “You know I’ve been serving aboard the Olinski for months now, but I don’t think we’ve ever shared a conversation that wasn’t on the bridge,” he mused thoughtfully.

Mirri accepted the plate of food that was brought to her and she sipped a glass of wine. She was not a big dancer, this was more of a time for her to people watch.

“Mirri?” Jason prodded gently. “You still with us?”

Mirri looked at Jason “Sorry, I was lost in thought. What were you saying?” She asked the XO feeling very embarassed that she had not heard what Jason was saying.

“Just saying hi,” Jason smiled. “I was just commenting that we’ve serving together for months now but I don’t think we’ve ever had a conversation that wasn’t on the bridge.” He glanced over at Sidney who was dancing with Toro.

The Captain was enjoying the dance very much. To his surprise Toro was a good dancer. She was also an easy woman to hold. Fit and curvy at the same time.

Parker CO

Toro smiled at Parker “Are you enjoying your evening?” She asked as they moved around the dance floor. Toro was definitely light on her feet and could handle herself in pretty much any situation.

In the meantime Counselor Emma Ripley couldn’t resist teasing Michael. “Don’t tell me I dance that badly?” she smiled knowingly.

Jason Harn and his army of NPCs

Michael knew she had been teasing him since the moment they met. “No, no. I’m not much of a conversationalist.” One dance. That’s it. “It’s been a while since I’ve been to an event like this.”

Kolar rolled his eyes, “I have on two occasions dis-proven time travel backwards and once forward… but here we are.” Kolar shrugged. The Olinski had already traveled through time and the XO did so as well. He paused for moment, looked at her sidelong, an evaluating glance… she seemed to be angling her body in a fashion that would make it more attractive. He then scanned the crowd.. there was no one directly looking at her… that would imply she was doing it for him.

He smiled as he laughed at himself, a Vulcan Woman flirting with a non-Vulcan the odds of that was one in… he started doing the math… “One in one hundred twenty seven thousand nine hundred and fourteen.” He accidentally said aloud. It wasn’t quite as unlikely as he thought it would be. He had to submit mentally he was a pretty good match and his features were symmetrical.

The little Vulcan was giving him a blank catlike stare. “Are those the odds of time travel being possible? Or practical? I had assumed that the reality of time travel has been well documented in this century.”

As the dance ended the Captain asked Toro if she was interested in leaving. He would let her figure out what he meant. Of all the women on the boat he knew she was the more likely not to be offended. She had done the same thing to many a good man herself. If it surprised her then he would blame it on the whiskey and put the moment away forever and move on.

Parker CO

“Where would you like to go?” Toro asked slipping her arm through Sidney’s arm, her green eyes sparkling. She was having fun and she enjoyed spending time with Sidney, even though this was their first out of uniform encounter that they had.

“Oh, my,” Kolar continued aloud. “No.. its.. not that. Of course its been proven by multiple actual temporal incursions… the fact is the math isn’t really there.” It should be virtually impossible for her to figure out what he was calculating from the result his offered unless she was thinking along the exact same lines he was.

Kolar

Maya tilted her head to right. “The math isn’t there? I don’t understand.”

Jason Harn’s NPC’s, beating this dead horse

Meanwhile, back at Mirri’s table, Jason was trying to figure out how to make conversation without coming off as too pushy. Or creepy. Sexual harassment (real or otherwise) was not the way to get the best out of your officers and didn’t do your career any favors either. At the same time he couldn’t be too inquisitive or he’d be forced to share information about his past, what with the whole “living relic from the Romulan War” thing and all. Although Mirri gave the impression of someone who could take a secret to her grave, she could have a whole network of officers she gossiped with and he wouldn’t know. To be honest, he didn’t know anything about her that wasn’t in her file and it had been a while since he had read her file.

“That looks good. I should get something to eat myself,” he commented easily. Sharing a meal at a party was a good way to get to know Miranda Lawrence. Not too pushy, almost zero sexual connotation, and perfectly casual.

Jason Harn, XO, beating this dead horse until it drops

Mirri chuckled “It is delicious.” She said and motioned for the waiter to bring over a plate of what she had ordered. “So…what do you like to do in your free time?” She asked “I personally like a good book or sitting in the lounge watching people.” She said finishing a bite of her food.
