One thing as good about a ship as large as the Olinski, he had a quality lounge and there was always people there. Kolar was a weird combination. Everyone liked the easy going quiet and friendly science officer, but no one was really a close friend. He was both very open and closed at the same time. He took an empty seat at the bar…

Kolar

nobody wants to play

OOC: Ouch.

OOC Hurts my feelings

IC: “Hey Kolar, want some company?” a masculine voice said behind him. To his left the tall and broad-shouldered Jason Harn managed to lift his leg over a barstool to sit beside him. Unlike Kolar Jason was a social animal, but his position of first officer and a complete lack of childhood friends had isolated him. To his credit, today Jason didn’t come off as ‘too eager’ right now.

Jason Harn

“You would think in a glorified can in space people would be more social.” He looked about. “Although the frequency of sexual couplings is a little higher than statistically probable.” He paused. “Yes I would like company.”

Kolar

“Sexual couplings?” Jason blinked before a mischievous gleam appeared in his eye. “Not that I’m not flattered, Kolar, but you have to remember that I was born in an earlier time.”

Jason Harn, revealing his age by making an inappropriate remark

“I’m certain there are individuals who match your sexual orientation that find you attractive Commander, whether I fall under that orientation or not, I am not one of them.” He took a sip of his drink. “Statistically speaking there is likely to be at least one on the ship… perhaps as many as two who find you desirable.”

Kolar (Statistics Burn)

“Yeah, but that whole ‘chain of command’ thing keeps gettin’ in my way,” Jason sighed. “I know there aren’t any regulations that strictly prohibit it, but between my size and my rank, coming on to a subordinate just seems creepy to me,” he admitted, withholding the colossal age difference between himself and every woman on the ship. His face was melancholy for a moment before becoming clever and mischievous. “Why mention sexual couplings in the first place Kolar?” he asked with a wicked smile. “Jealous?”

Jason Harn XO and too old for every woman on board

“I’m haven’t seen rank impact relationships on the ship too significantly, with the exception of the Captain, and perhaps myself which I attribute more to do with my personality rather than rank.” Kolar took a sip as he looked around the lounge. “I would surmise the same is true for you. It probably has far less to do with rank and more to do with your personal perception of what is happening.”

“Jealous isn’t an emotion I commonly feel. Its a waste of time and usually is evidence of a lack of character. I do desire more social and,” he nodded “sexual activity, but I’m not jealous of your… and didn’t you just say you your chain of command is getting in your way.”

Kolar

The entire time Kolar was speaking Jason was staring at the Bajoran as if he had grown a second head. “What? No! Not jealous of me!” he protested before bringing his voice back down to a more confidential volume. He glanced around and gestured at some young officers of different genders seated in a booth who seemed to be enjoying each other’s company. “I meant are you jealous of all of these younger officers who got plenty of peers and nothing to lose and aren’t afraid to play the game. You know, the class of Stardate 59000, that kind of thing. I just wondered if you found your promotion… isolating.”

As soon as he said it, he regretted it. It would have been better for Kolar to think that Jason thought he was jealous of the older man. Now he was projecting his own insecurities onto the Bajoran, and it wasn’t a good look. Maybe Kolar would take the tactful approach and pretend to share the old man’s anxieties, but Jason wasn’t counting on it.

Jason Harn, XO

Kolar shook his head. “No,” he said after very little thought, but didn’t respond to the jealousy part. “As I said earlier, my social isolation has more to do my own personality. It is my belief that I do not encourage social interaction due to my quiet nature and infrequent public appearances.” There was at least some truth to this, Kolar didn’t go out often and he rarely spoke when he was out. He didn’t say the second part of his thought which was he too smart for his own good.

He looked about, “Perhaps an exercise in non-isolation.”

Kolar

“Hey, it’s okay to want privacy Kolar,” the older man assured him. “If you really wanted lots of friends, you’d have them. Some people are more comfortable with their own thoughts. You ever want to try something different, the rest of us are here.”

Jason Harn, XO

Kolar smiled a bright smile… brighter that any Harn had ever seen cross his face…”Oh you misunderstand commander.” He paused. “This is an exercise of ‘non-isolation’” He looked about at pointed at a particularly attractive female in the astrometrics department. “You need to invite that female… I presume your orientation is heterosexual, to a meal. You have five minutes… following your attempt you get to challenge me to the same.”
