Having been tied mostly to engineering most of the past few days she was scratching at the bit to get out and go see something more than the ships engineering room, usually, its where she felt at home but was suffering what her crewman described as cabin fever. They were the ones who suggested to go for a walk having noticed how dishevelled she looked. Heeding their advice she began wandering the corridors of the Olinksi until she finally found herself in the hangar bay. She had been here before but only briefly and she hadn’t been able to have a nose around, she moved over to one of the ship’s fighters and ran a hand along the hull.

As Vega touched the bird, she would feel it shift slightly from movement inside the cockpit. Looking up, she would notice a pair of boots extruding from the open canopy. She would also hear some grunts coming from inside before finally a triumphant “Got you, you little son of a. . . . .”

The boots disappeared and following more rustling from inside the upper half of the CAG appeared. In his hand he held a small component.

“Oh, hey,” he said to the Trill. He tossed her the small module he had and began to climb out of his bird. “Who’d have thought that getting a gauss induction regulator out would be such a pain in the —” Ric bit his tongue refusing to finish the statement. ‘Sorry, Lt. I’ve been struggling with that for over a half hour.”

She looked down to the component in her hand which she recognised to be, an albeit slightly smaller version of what she knew anyway to be a gauss induction regulator. Vega was about to anseer but he asked another question.

As Vega was dressed in engineering coverall, he asked, “You knew to the flight crew, Lt.? I don’t think I’ve seen you on the deck before.”

Ricochet (CAG)

This time she found her voice and said, “Oh no not flight crew, Engineering” She said simply, there was no need to explain she was the chief though she imagined that it wouldn’t matter here anyway, after all this was thier world she had stumbled into. “Are you?” She asked a little dumbly, like a new fresh out of the gate graduate her only reconcile was she’d never worked with a fligh wing before and thier rank and insignia different enough to make no sense of it.

Ric chuckled as he continued to remove the grease from his hands. “Oh, heck no. I know just enough about my bird to keep her flying and firing.”

Ric extended his right hand and introduced himself. “Ricochet, CAG. Officially Cmdr. O’Shea, but Ricochet to anyone that can keep my bird in the air and at 100%. That includes engineers.”

Vega reached out her own hand and met his, she knew that CAG stood for Commander Air Group which to her was the equivalent of a department head though maybe just as important as the Captain. That being said she was a little confused as to why he would be doing any maintenance, it would be similar to having the helmsman help repair the warp core, lord those guys knew how to fly but put them in an engineering room and they were lost.

He noticed her confusion as to what he was doing and cleared the air. “Usually, the pilots don’t do their own maintenance, but there boss had everbody doing something else. I wanted to get that replaced before I forgot. There’s a reason I fly them instead of fix them. First assignment on a carrier, Lt.?”

Ricochet (CAG)

“Oh that makes sense” She said with a smile understanding the situation a little better than before, “Yes actually” She paused and then quickly added, “And my first time as a senior officer so its all pretty overwhelming, the engineering crew are good to me though and don’t give me much to do which is kind of why I’m just wandering around exploring the ship, getting to know her” It was true that since becoming chief she found she did more people management than actual engineering work, that didn’t stop her completely but it did know come as a second part of the job.

Ric grinned at her comments. “That’s the worst part about being in charge. Sometimes the managing gets in the way of why you’re there. You do a good job–you get promoted. You get promoted–more responsibility. You get more responsibility–you learn to delegate. Then when you get everything delegated, either you have nothing to do orrrrrrrr you have no time to do it. It’s a vicious cycle .”

“You need to find the time to still get your hands dirty. During missions, I should be in the CIC coordinating everything, That’s why I made sure the people under my command can do that job as well. It allows me to get out into the blavk. I’d go crazy if I couldn’t.”

Ricochet (CAG)

Vega understood completely more often than not she found herself going stir crazy with either boredom or overworking herself, she was getting better at delegating but she as any natural engineer wanted to get her hands dirty all the time, and well sometimes a chief it just wasn’t possible, “I know the exact feeling, sometimes thought I would mind dealing with just like, I don’t know a little warp core breach or something” He chuckled, perhaps she had gone crazy. “So when you’re not coordinating everything in the CIC or working on your ships what else does the CAG do?” What she really wanted to know was what does he do in his downtime, if he even afforded himself any.
