He laughed. “What, you don’t know what pilots do? We drink, we fight, we drink some more, and try to hook up with anything that has a pulse. . . .at least that’s what our reputation is all about, but the truth is, I take care of all the boring stuff. . . going over pilots reports, maintenance reports, schedule training sessions, debriefings. . . .but the worst part? Notifying families when one of my pilots is KIA. That’s the part that I hate more than anything else. I’d rather file a million reports before having to write one of those letters to some kid’s parents, or wife. You never get use to that. Fortunately, I haven’t had to do that very often since coming back here as the CAG. The Olinski’s fighter wing has the highest pilot survival rates in the Fleet. I’d like to think I’ve got the best of best here.”

Ricochet (CAG)

Vega couldn’t imagine having to do the things he had been explaining, though a department head deaths within the ship were usually dealt by the XO, CO and counsellor and while she may time to time write a letter to express her condolences she never had to be the sole person responsible for notifying a family fo such. She was about to reply when another joined their little meeting.

Just then Xandra came around the corner and stuck up behind Ric. As he mentioned the highest survival rate, she reached around him and grabbed his tool from his hand. “We survive because we let ‘certified’ mechanics see to our birds.” She laughed and handed him back the rool as she nodded to the woman. “Hi, Xandra. One of the highly survivable pilots.” She offered her hand to Vega.

At five foot seven inches, she was slightly smaller than Ric. Blue green eyes were framed with dark hair that was plaited down her back. Her coveralls were tied around her waist with the arm sleeves, with her white tshirt showing signs of wear and grease stains, though clean. “I hope I’m not intruding. Actually heading to my own bird to double check some panel pins that were being replaced.”

Pilot

Ric raised an eyebrow. “Oh, really? When did you become a certified fighter tech?” Before she could respond, he jokingly added, “Yeah, that’s what I thought, you hypocrite!!”

Vega took the pilots hand with a smile, it was nice meeting new people and those especially outside of her own department. Too often she only found herself speaking to engineers, her daily routine seemed to eat, work sleep and repeat with little much in socialising. “Not intruding at all, if anything I’m the one intruding on your territory but the Commander… Rico here has been explaining how things work around here.” Vega took the woman in and decided quickly that she seemed friendly enough. “And that among dealing with your ships and flying you are rather diverse in drinking and” She looked to him to see if she got the word right “hooking up?”

Ric just snickered and looked away from Xandra.

Xandra laughed and turned to Ric giving him a you’re in trouble, Mister look. “Oh he did, did he? Giving away all our secrets.” She turned back to Vega. “Well, I’m sure you’re welcome to join us any time our drinking heads the way of ‘diversity’,” she laughed and nodded. “As to the rest, well… Yes, some of the pilots can be cads.” She gave Ric another glance. Looking back at Vega, she smiled. “Just be careful not to fall for one who won’t end it all for you, though.” She leaned in to half whisper though Ric would still hear her. “You have to be careful with pilots. Sometimes they don’t know a good thing when they have it.”

Again, Ric simply smirked. . .

Standing back up, she looked at them both. “Well, I think I have intruded quite enough. Vega, it’s been a pleasure. Find me anytime you want to plunk around the hanger. Always happy to show folks around.” She nodded once to Ric, “Commander…” a sly smile on her lips.

Xandra
Pilot

Vega couldn’t help but notice the sly smile and wondered if there was more than met the eyes but with little information and time spent with the two she didn’t want to jump to any conclusions. “It was nice meeting you Xandra, I’ll be sure to take a look at you fighter some time” She waved a goodbye.

“Later, Sehlat,” he called out as she walked away. When Xandra almost out of earshot, Ric continued. “You have to be careful who you take back to your quarters. Every once in a while, you’ll find one that doesn’t want to leave. . . “

Ricochet (CAG)

Vega was very close to saying something along the lines of not feeding the animals but she wasn’t the type to be so mean, even if it was as a joke. “Well, I’ll certainly take that under advisement, I hardly doubt it would be a problem for me though” She shrugged smiling, “Well perhaps I’ve intruded too long and should let you get back to your work?” She wasn’t sure why she formed it as a question, perhaps she hoped hed say ‘no stay lets fix ships together’ or ‘Let’s start the drinking early’ the later not exactly her idea of fun but she’d be willing to try if only to make new friends.
