The trails that the sensors had traced indicated that the ships were still in Federation space and were moving closer to the Tholian space. Both were moving at warp 9.
“It appears the Tholians and Breen weren’t intending on making this area their battleground,” Trevor announced when he stepped back onto the Bridge. “When the Governor tried to contact the pair, the Tholians replied they didn’t have any issue with the planet.” The Counselor added.
Alexandra wasn’t far behind. “And unsurprisingly, the Breen didn’t deign to reply. It is curious that their conflict worked its way all the way here.”
-Lt Alexandra Drake, CoS
“We are trailing their warp signatures while they are in Federation space or neutral space. The Tholians are running like the solar wind at warp 9 and the Breen are right with them. At warp 6 we will be behind them by a bit if they stop now. However if they make it to Tholian space we wont follow.” The Captain said to the Bridge and then officers returning. Also it gave science and the helm their instructions.
“The math isn’t in our favor, we’d have to red line the engines or hope the engagement becomes a standing fight, which it doesn’t appear to be.”
At the moment, there was a communique from Starbase 214. The content revealed that the Starbase has detected the Tholian and Breen vessels altering course towards the edges of Cardassian space. They had travelled close to the Talarian border but did not enter it. From the trajectory at the moment, they will enter Cardassian space towards the planet Vitar.
The Navigator updated the Captain.
“Starbase 214 has detected the Tholian and Breen vessels altering course towards the edges of Cardassian space. They had travelled close to the Talarian border but did not enter it. From the trajectory at the moment, they will enter Cardassian space towards the planet Vitar.” He updated.
“Very well alter course to match.” The Captain ordered. “Chief Engineer Dal can we punch it up to Warp 8 without damaging the engines?” He then asked the CE.
OOC: There would be no problem with the engines.
“I’ll be surprised if the Cardassians even send out a ship to greet them,” Michaels stated. The Counselor was hoping as much since it would only make matters worse if they entered the playing field.
A check on the latest intelligence reports would show that the Cardassian presence in Vitar was not very strong after the Dominion War.
“The Cardassian Fleet is a mere shadow of itself since the war.” Even at its peak it wasn’t a match for the Federation. Which ironically was the part of the reason they joined the Dominion and now was in an even a worse position.
“Should I call ahead and get permission to enter Cardassian space? Even in ‘hot pursuit’ They aren’t to accepting of Star-ships cruising about there space.”
“No. Even if the Cardassians are weak in that zone it is still a foreign space of an independent power. we just don’t have the authority other than to monitor. If they stay on our side. well that is another matter.” The Captain answered.
The ETA for the Olinski to reach the Cardassian border at that warp speed (8) was at least 7 days.
“If the Tholians and Breen were at each other’s throats, wouldn’t we see more fleet movement from the two?” The Counselor asked, trying to piece together the information they already had.
“A dispute between Captains?, something they’d rather not have anyone notice with major fleet movements?” Alexandra pondered what two ships could be up to on their own.
-Lt Alexandra Drake, CoS
As they were speaking, Starbase sent an update. The Cardassians have sent two ships on an intercept course with the Tholians and Breen. If the ships do not change course, they will intercept in Cardassian space in two days.
“Well that means that the Cardassians are aware of what is going on, but two ships… that’s not going to make much of an impact.” Kolar sent a message back asking for names and classes of the Cardassian vessels.
<After some time>
The Olinski had reached within 8 hours of the Cardassian border when Starbase sent in an intelligence report.
At the border, the two Cardassian ships were incapacitated and the Tholian ship had sustained further damage. The Breen ships were now down to two. The Tholian ship remained outside Cardassian space whilst the Cardassian ships managed to stay within their own space. The Tholian ship is moving along the Cardassian border trying to shake off the Breen ships. It was also trying to get round Talarian space to get back to their own space. Meantime, sensors also indicate that there might be Breen reinforcements on the way.
Kolar snorted, a rare display of emotion. “I told you so,” Kolar glanced at the sensors, “we have more Breen working towards the fight.”
=^=Cardassian ships, this is the Olinski, are you in need of assistance?=^=
The Captain was worried. This could turn into a regional war.
“Helm open coms to Starfleet Command.” The Captain ordered.
Mirri nodded “Comms open Captain. Star Fleet Command.” She said turning to face Sidney.
=^=Captain Parker to Star Fleet Command. The Tholian and Breen fight has escalated to a Tholian, Cardassian and Brren fight with the Breen looking like the aggressors. If we intervene we risk getting involved. If we do not we risk an interstellar war. Advise as you can. Meanwhile we will be moving to support a peaceful negotiation. However Breen ships are possibly reinforcing near Talarian space. I am obliged to engage the Breen if I receive no other orders.=^=
“XO get with the CIO and COS. I want a tactical plan in front of me in 10 minutes.” He said to Kolar.
=^=Lieutenant Turcio and Drake please report to conference room 1 on the double.=^= Kolar nodded to the Captain before he left the bridge.
=^=Understood.” Toro said as she left her office to head to the conference room. She had several data padds with her.
“I think this would be time for the enemy of our enemy to be our friends, Captain.” The Counselor said, speaking up. “Obviously, the Tholian ship is no match for the Breen, especially with more on their way.” Lieutenant Michaels added. “Maybe we can open up a dialogue with the Tholians to see what all this ruckus is about?”
“Thats not a bad suggestion Counselor. ” The Captain answered. “Mirri open a new com for the Tholian ship.”
=^=Tholian ship under attack by the Breen. Report your status and why you are under attack in Federation space.=^=
As he waited for the reply he hoped to come he analyzed the situation. They were on the cusp of an interstellar war. The Breen were not known for laying down the sword once they picked it up. He had three options. One was to do nothing and let the individual combatant’s play it out. Second was to try and negotiate it out until something changed that would indicate a course of action. Which of course again the Breen were not known for negotiating. If the Telarites became involved they were the take action and ask questions later kind of species. The third was pick a side, hit the other side hard and fast. Eliminate the threat and then figure it out. The obvious downsides were many but it was decisive and if more Breen were coming it would be better to end the threat, leave the zone and prepare or remain and take them out as well.
Crazy as it sounded he was leaning toward the last option. He wanted to see what Kolar put in front of him before he made a decision.
=/\=We were in neutral space when the Breen attacked and forced us to escape into Federation space. We are attempting to return to Tholian space but Breen is preventing it.=/\=
=^=What’s your damage and do you have any idea why they attacked?=^=
The Captain was suspicious that the Breen just decided to go hunting Tholians today. Especially since Tholians were not easy prey.
=/\=To steal, of course,=/\= came the reply. =/\=We have precious cargo on board.=/\= It was evident that the Tholians were not willing to share what they were carrying.
“Is it possible they have something or someone on board that the Breen are after?” Michaels asked, trying to find a more out of the box theory. Both the Breen and Tholians were sometimes unpredictable so, at this point, there’s no telling what the Tholians did to provoke this.
“Counselor your guess is as good as mine.” The Captain said. “Unfortunately were going to have to take an action and no matter what its going to put us into the middle of this.”
Starfleet Command had taken some time to reply. They hailed the Olinski. Rear Admiral Ra’ash, an Andorian who was in the Strategy arm of Starfleet appeared on the screen. After the usual greetings and pleasantries, he continued, =/\=Captain Parker, we will have four ships on the way to the Cardassian border. We will accept your suggestion of a negotiation. We will alert the Talarians and inform both them and the Cardassians what has been happening. You will have command of the the fleet formed, your ship as lead, the four ships are the Marin and the Veracruz, which are of the same class as the Brian Olinski, the Concord class USS Springfield, and the Memorial class USS Chronicle. We await a good result from your endeavours.=/\=
The Captain wondered how many war hawks were in SF these days. Sending this many ships would signal a willingness to start something. Oh it might be seen as an overwhelming show of force he knew the Breen were unlikely to back down. This may have committed them to a fight.
Sid hit his com.
=^= Captain to Kolar. Come back to the Bridge. We have an update=^=
=^=Aye sir,=^=Kolar tapped and responded automatically.
He needed ideas because his was singular. Jump out of warp, hammer the Breen and wait for the Breen reinforces to arrive. He doubted his own task force would arrive on time to immediately join the fight so one less Breen ship in action might be a good thing.
It didn’t take him a minute to go from the conference room to the Bridge. Kolar first looked at the tactical board to be sure that something emergent didn’t occur. “What’s the situation Captain?”
“The Breen have taken out and badly damaged several of the Cardassian ships. The Tholians are almost done. We have no idea why this started. SFC is sending us a battle group consisting of 2 more Olinski class and a Concord.” The Captain answered.
“That’s an inordinate amount of firepower. In the condition the Cardassians are in, we could go halfway to Cardassia Prime with those four ships.” It was an exaggeration, but Olinski Battleships were fleet flagships, he wasn’t certain there were too many battles in the war that had this many of this class of ship present. “Do you think that command knows something we don’t....”
“I’m not sure, if they knew what the Cardassians were after they would have given us some clue whether or not we should take it.”
As the Olinski got nearer, the sensors told them that the Cardassian ships had lost both comms and life support. There were a total of about 120 life signs still present in the two Cardassian ships. The Breen reinforcements would take another 24 hours to reach the Tholian ship. The Olinski was merely 20 minutes away.
“Damn it.” The Captain said as he looked at the new data.
“We have to rescue those crew members first. Have Medical be ready for casualties. Unless you have another idea Number One we will drop out of warp at Red Alert. Hit the Breen with a heavy volley of torpedo’s and phasers. Swing around and beam the Cardassians off those ships and get ready to hit the Breen again if they have any fight left in them.” He said in quick succession.
“Helm increase speed. To hell with 20 minutes. I want to be there in five.” He ordered.
Kolar looked at the situation. He looked at Parker and said something stunning from this pacifist. “120 people can be rescued by our shuttle wing without lowering the shields.” He looked back at the tactical board. “If we intend to fight, then we warp in over the Cardassians… start the rescue with the shuttles… they wont know our intentions and won’t engage us, After the shuttles are deployed. We should execute your plan… placing the Olinski between them and our shuttles. No need to alert them to fire on us before the rescue starts.” Just because he didn’t like fighting didn’t mean he didn’t know how.
“Make it so but put the fighter wing as the pilots of the shuttles. I want the best we have flying them.” The Captain agreed and added.
OOC: I am assuming that engineering heard the call and started to do something … :)
IC: The Olinski dropped out of warp and saw that the Breen were still engaging the Tholian ship, which seemed to be moving away from the Cardassian border. The Breen reinforcements were still several hours away. The Breen ships did not even bother to engage the Olinski.
=^=CAG this is the XO. We have two Cadassian cruisers with casualties that are going to need an evac. We want fighter pilots in the shuttles to do the people moving… about 120 on the two vessels. Following that we are going to engage the Breen… maybe the Tholians too so the remaining fighters might be needed as well.=^=
=^=Roger, X. We’ll be ready,=^= replied Ricochet.
As the Onliski dropped out of warp the shuttles were deployed with the fighter pilots. As they started the rescue the Olisnki moved into position.
=^=This is Captain Parker of the USS Olinski to Breen ships. Disengage the Tholian ship and stand down. You have ten seconds to comply.=^=
“Tactical load firing sequence Delta 1 Parker and prepare to fire on my order.” He ordered.
Delta 1 Parker was a spread of 4 quantum torpedos with two splitting and targeting different ships. The trajectory was that one torpedo hit and the second one followed to the same exact location. Making a double impact on the ship it engaged. In this case the Engines were the target on both ships. This followed with a 5 second target to the same area with phasers on full. It was a devastating attack that could bring a ship to a standstill and damage it badly if not destroy it.
=/\=If you want the risk of a war between the Breen Confederacy and the Federation, you can fire the first volley!=/\= came a very smug reply.
“They are fighting … or about to enter Federation Space. That’s their violation… ”
“Have the ceased their attack on the Tholian vessel?” The Captain asked.
“They are already in violation of Federation space and attacked the Tholians in our space so your right Commander. The right side of this is conflict is squarely in our favor. I am not sure if that will matter or not but its good enough for me.” The Captain said.
OOC: I just need to know if they complied or not GM before bombs away.
