Even after materializing aboard the USS Brian A. Olinski, M’rahja Ko couldn’t quite shake the awe and thrill of her first posting beyond the Academy. Every cadet on the Security track knew of the Olinski. Several of her academy cohorts had the single, passionate goal of being posted aboard this very ship. M’rahja had no posting goals, but neither had she imagined a posting here! The pressure to work hard and earn her place here rested upon her like a second skin. Maybe it mingled with her nerves as a fresh officer. She was an ensign now, and all the responsibilities that came with it.

She checked her appearance in the reflection of a blank computer screen. Her hair stayed in it’s tight braid and her uniform crisp and well-fitted. After taking a deep, calming breath, M’rahja Ko announced her presence by pressing the door chime and waited for permission to enter.

Ensign Ko (Security)

Yvasgard Sigundson was the officer in charge at the moment in the Security room. He looked at the new ensign and gave a gruff look. He was not a fan of new security officers or Caitians for that matter.

“Well stop standing there and get in here.” He said to her. Her tail unnerved him.

“I am Lt. jg Sigundson and as far as you know I am your new boss. Don’t waste my time and I will not waste yours.” He siad and snatched her PaDD from her hand. He checked it to make sure she was not some spy getting on board and saw it was in order.

“What are you good at Ensign other than pacing and purring.” He asked. He knew the CoS would want to meet her but he could care less. He had holes in his roster to fill as the duty officer.

Nameless Ensign with a name , Lt jg Sigundson

Ko blinked, and held herself unnaturally still in the face of. . . whatever this was. Hostility? Unfriendliness? She didn’t have a name for it and she didn’t think she could ever find the right word. Ko stepped inside and moved to hand over her PaDD, only to have it snatched away instead. The Ensign blinked, but otherwise made no sound or protest. If it wasn’t for the slight twitch in her tail, she could have been mistaken for a statue in that moment.

“Plenty of things.” Ko said, her tone as flat as the floor they stood on. “I specialized in hand to hand combat and survival. I’m small but I had good teachers at the Academy and I know how to use my size to my advantage and I’m agile. I’m a practiced shot with any phaser or rifle. In short, put me in front of a hostile and I’ll know what to do.” Not to mention her claws, though not sharp, were still pointed enough to deal some damage if given the chance.

Ensign Ko (Security)

“Any green recruit can shoot and fight. That’s it?” He asked dismissively.

If the Ensign was thinking she was going to get the happy team meeting her she was in the wrong place. Sigundson was not a nice guy, most would not him at a family dinner but most would also say that he was good at what he did. Apparently in his past he had a negative encounter with a Caitian but it was not clear if he disliked them anymore than any other species.

Sigundson

That’s it? Ko faltered, suddenly unsure of herself and her purpose here. She recalled a memory of standing outside one of the simulation rooms at the Academy while her partner yelled at her for making the cold and calculated choice to leave one of their own behind so that they could save more civilians. Ko was familiar with people not liking her, but when she thought it about it she thought that it would be different enlisted. “Are you asking for a demonstration?” She asked, keeping that flat tone in her voice. Ko knew how to keep her emotions in check, but she decided would not slink out of here with her tail between her legs either.

Ensign Ko (Security)

Sigundson stepped within inches of the ensign.

“The Olinski is a combat vessel. We get sent where other ships can’t and don’t want to go. Maybe not every mission but if the heat is on we are first in line. Security boards ships, take on hostiles, interviews killers on top of all the daily things we have to do. We lose people. What do you bring to the table Ensign?” Sigundson was being hard but then if the COS was not around this was his preferred way to introduce new boots to the Olinski.

Sigundson

Ko held her ground but couldn’t help the spark of annoyance with having to crane her neck to maintain eye contact with the Lt. jg. Sometimes being small was a literal pain in her neck. “I can smell you from a mile away, and I can tell, by smell, how long since a phaser discharged and at what strength. I can hear hostiles before long they come near me, not to mention all the other sounds that are beyond a human’s ability to hear. I can see in the dark and I can track a target across any environment, no matter how faint the trail. I’m fast and I got the endurance to match, which makes me ideal for long engagements. Do you need to hear more?”

Ensign Ko (Security)

“Humph.” Sigundson grunted.

At least she finally stood up for herself.

“COS office is over there. Then come back to me for your duty assignment.” Sigundson handed the PaDD back to her and turned away to address another ensign who seemed to look confused over some readouts on the security monitor.

OOC: OK COS its your turn to take over with the new JO.

Sigundson aka Sidney

Alexandra heard arguing outside her office. Not entirely unusual, she recognized one voice but not the other. Someone new was due to report. Sigundson is harassing the new recruit no doubt. She sat back in her chair, hoping the newbie wasn’t terribly scarred just yet.

-Lt Alexandra Drake

M’rahja’s ears flicked back at that little ‘humph’ but said no more. It seems she passed the test. Or said enough to appease the Lt. jg. “Yes, sir.” Ko said, happy to be away from this man, however temporary. She accepted her PaDD and made her way to the COS office . Her ‘new ship posting’ nerves had vanished, and were replaced by feeling a wary anticipation. The kind where you felt like a taunt wire waiting for the push. “Ensign Ko, reporting for duty.” She said and stood at attention. This time she won’t be caught off-guard. The Caitian stood straight and still while the tip of her tail flicked back and forth.
