Ko held her ground but couldn’t help the spark of annoyance with having to crane her neck to maintain eye contact with the Lt. jg. Sometimes being small was a literal pain in her neck. “I can smell you from a mile away, and I can tell, by smell, how long since a phaser discharged and at what strength. I can hear hostiles before long they come near me, not to mention all the other sounds that are beyond a human’s ability to hear. I can see in the dark and I can track a target across any environment, no matter how faint the trail. I’m fast and I got the endurance to match, which makes me ideal for long engagements. Do you need to hear more?”

Ensign Ko (Security)

“Humph.” Sigundson grunted.

At least she finally stood up for herself.

“COS office is over there. Then come back to me for your duty assignment.” Sigundson handed the PaDD back to her and turned away to address another ensign who seemed to look confused over some readouts on the security monitor.

OOC: OK COS its your turn to take over with the new JO.

Sigundson aka Sidney

Alexandra heard arguing outside her office. Not entirely unusual, she recognized one voice but not the other. Someone new was due to report. Sigundson is harassing the new recruit no doubt. She sat back in her chair, hoping the newbie wasn’t terribly scarred just yet.

-Lt Alexandra Drake

M’rahja’s ears flicked back at that little ‘humph’ but said no more. It seems she passed the test. Or said enough to appease the Lt. jg. “Yes, sir.” Ko said, happy to be away from this man, however temporary. She accepted her PaDD and made her way to the COS office . Her ‘new ship posting’ nerves had vanished, and were replaced by feeling a wary anticipation. The kind where you felt like a taunt wire waiting for the push. “Ensign Ko, reporting for duty.” She said and stood at attention. This time she won’t be caught off-guard. The Caitian stood straight and still while the tip of her tail flicked back and forth.

Ensign Ko (Security)

Alexandra stood. “At ease Ensign. I heard Lt Sigudson outside. I imagine he was welcoming you aboard with a friendly smile.” She said with a slight smile. “Have a seat, Ensign.” She gestured to a chair in front of her desk. “Something from the replicator?”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

M’rahja relaxed her stance. There was a flash of uncertainty across her face as she studied the COS for a quick moment. That taunt feeling in her chest loosened. “The friendliest I’ve seen.” She answered before taking her seat. At the offer of replicated food, M’rahja shook her head and spoke a simple, “no thank you.” She felt too tense still to think of eating or drinking.

Ensign Ko (Security)

“Very well Ensign.” Alexandra sat as well. “You’re reporting directly from the Academy, correct?”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

“That is correct,” Ko answered. Even though she was a fresh faced Ensign, M’rahja had faith in her skills and her education.

Ensign Ko (Security)

Alexandra nodded. “Excellent. To get assigned to a ship like this, you must’ve done quite well.” She rose from her seat, approaching the window and looking out. “Outside your basic security skills from the Academy, what are you bringing to the position? What do you add to this team that no one else does Ensign?”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

M’rahja sat straighter at the compliment while giving a nod of acknowledgement. She never quite knew how to respond to compliments. Then took a moment to consider her response to the next question posed. What did she contribute beyond her security training? Part of her knew she could repeat what she said earlier, about her natural abilities as a Caitian, but decided there was another way she stood out. “I know just about every diplomatic protocol by heart.” She answered. The Caitian had a (not so) secret love of diplomacy, the intricacies of trade agreements and the wonders and pitfalls of First Contacts. “Especially the protocols surrounding planetary treaties. And I regularly read through the latest public reports on diplomatic missions.”

Sure there were actual trained diplomats with the same (if not more) knowledge and understanding, but Ko was confident in her response. How many security personal knew the same? Or stayed up to date not just on the agreements themselves but also the details within?

Ensign Ko (security)

“Valuable skills. I will note that for the future.” Alexandra said. “Where do you see your Starfleet career going? Diplomatic Corps, Command, something else entirely?”

“Lastly, do you have any questions for me?”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

M’rahja nodded, and gave both questions a moment of thought. Command never really interested her and she never had big dreams of becoming a captain one day. “Diplomatic Corps, perhaps.” Her ears flicked back for a moment, expressing a wince in her own way. She honestly did not have any concrete goals for the future, her only goals were to serve proudly in the moment and see where her current path takes her. “No questions at the moment, ma’am.”
