Ric stepped from the dugout and looked at the bright blue sky. Not a cloud to be seen, and why not? This was one of his favorite holo-programs A perfecy day for baseball the announcer would say. The green infield and outfield grass cut precisely to the correct height. The dirt base paths had been sprayed with water to keep the dust from flying.

Life on the Olinski had been keeping him busy lately and he needed a way to de-stress. Usually, Xandra was his first go-to for relieving stress and pressure, but she was currently busy flying maneuvers with her squad of pilots. So, baseball was the his next best option. Taking some cuts and hitting the ball hard and deep always worked for him.

Currently, the stadium, Miller Park (https://ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/21f71b1/2147483647/strip/true/crop/4213x2370+0+219/resize/1280x720!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fewscripps.brightspotcdn.com%2F1b%2F3d%2Fda5b83f24750bf833a6827154f2e%2Fgettyimages-1052012258.jpg), was empty except for the holgraphic pitcher on the mound, tossing the ball up and down in preparation for Ric to step into the batter’s box.

Stepping up to the plate, he dug his cleats into the dirt in the right side batter’s box. He took a few practice swing before setting his feet, the right foot slightly closer to home plate. He nodded to the pitcher who then began his wind-up. A fraction of a second later and the ball was speeding toward the plate. . . . .

Ricochet (MLB wannabe)

The pitcher hologram flicked out and suddenly it was the Captain stepping into the CAGs holoprogram as a surprise. He was not a good baseball player but he had pitched a little as a kid. He did his best to throw Ric a 3 finger knuckle ball. He hoped the unpredictable pitch would catch him unawares.

Sidney

The flickering of the pitcher broke Ric’s concentration. He blinked a number of times as he tried to adjust, only to now see Captain Parker releasing the ball. Concentration and timing were no longer in synch as he tried to adjust to pitch.

His swing was so far ahead of the dancing knuckleball that he pretty nearly screwed himself into the ground and ending up on his posterior in the opposite batter’s box. After lifting the brim of the helmet which had fallen over his eyes, he looked back to the mound and started to chuckle.

“That was a dirty trick to pull, Skipper!!”

Ricochet (CAG)

“Are you ready for the fastball?” The Captain asked.

He threw a decent fastball and against lesser batters it would work. However it was rather predictable. He decided to go for it anyway. He waited for Ric to go through his pre pitch routine. He did the same. Then he lined it up, wound it up and let her rip straight down the plate.

Parker

Better prepared this time, Ric started his swing only to realize again, that he was way ahead of the pitch. Still, he was able to adjust and make contact with the ball. This time, he sent the ball screaming down the right field line as it hooked foul and bounced around the seats in section 408 of the upper deck.

He laughed again. “Fastball, skipper? I was expecting something up around 95-98 moh. Computer, how fast was the Captain’s ‘fastball’?”

96 mph

“I’ll give you this much, skipper–you can throw strikes, but I think I’ve got you’re timing down now.” Ric dug in and prepared for Sidney’s next pitch.

Ricochet (CAG)

“Well lets see what you do with this.” The Captain yelled back. Ric would notice that the uniform that the Captain was wearing was an old Earth team called the Texas Rangers.

This time he took his time and threw the ball just as Ric was ready at bat. He knew he did not have that much left in the bag so he decided the Sinker was the way to go. What Ric would see was this:

He brought his arm up high and then down as he released it. Putting the pressure on the ball with the middle finger, and then twisted his hand as he released.

He knew if Ric was smart and attentive enough he might catch what was coming and get under it. The only real way to light up a Sinker. Other than that it would be a swing and a miss.

Parker

This time, he was ready for anything the skipper threw. The trick was to pick up the seams and watch the rotation of the ball as it approached. He watched the spin and realized Sid tried to fool him with the sinker. He bent his knees a bit lower than normal as he stepped and popped his hips open. The final quick snap of the wrists resulted in a solid crack of the bat . . . . Ric watched the ball sail and rise to straight away center field, finally coming to a stop after it bounced around the seats about 12 rows behind the 400’ sign.

“You got me twice, skipper. No way I was gonna let you fool me three times.”

Ricochet (CAG)

Alexandra came into the stands of the ballpark and admired Ric’s hit. She didn’t know the Captain and CAG were baseball players.
