Alexandra sat in her office, assigning crew rotations for security teams. She tossed the duty roster PaDD on her desk and sat back. It’s been a long day. She got up and got in the turbolift, deciding to get a quiet drink before heading home.

As Alexandra entered the crew lounge, it was as busy as usual. She ordered a drink, found a table, and sat, putting her combadge on the table in front of her.

-Alexandra Drake

“Hard day?” a voice on the table next to the Security chief said, the accent was a soft Scottish one. A man in his middle years sat on the table nursing a drink filled with green liquid. Even seated down it was clear he was a tall man. He smiled a friendly smile and put a hand out “James Grey, Just got brought in to run the Science Department” He was still wearing his uniform and two full pips were attached to his collar.

James Grey

“Not an especially hard day, just a long one. I’m Alexandra Drake, Chief of Security.” Alexandra shook his hand. “I haven’t been onboard terribly long either.” She smiled gently. “How’re you liking the ship so far?”

-Alexandra Drake

Crewman NE Sideglances saw the DHs conversing. He was not in that level. Honestly it was as if the DHs lived on another plane of existence. Then the CO and XO above that plane. He tapped NE Drinksalot and nodded over toward them.

“The lower nobles have entered.” He said.

“Yea who are they. Dont recognize them.” Drinksalot said and it was apparent he was upholding his good name.

“That is your new boss idiot.” Sideglances said indicating to Grey. “The other one is the Chief of Security. My new boss.”

“She would toast them?” Drinksalot said starting to raise his glass.

“Put it down. We don’t even register on their scans.” Sides said and Drinks shrugged and lowered it.

OOC: Some lower level officers view point from afar.

NE’s with Names.

James took his hand back “It’s been interesting, haven’t served on a ship for a good while let alone a military craft like the Olinski. It’s been an interesting change. And you?”

CSO

“This is my first assignment to what could be described as a battleship. It’s different.” Alexandra replied. “Though not as different in the day to day as the Captain led me to believe. I still set duty rosters, deal with people complaining about their shift, handle the little squabbles and security details. It’s still better than a cargo ship” she laughed a little. “So where we’re you before this?”

-Alexandra Drake

James stood up and joined the Security Chief at her table, placing his drink down before answering “I spent a few years teaching at the Vulcan Science Academy then the last two years I spent on a handful of Starships before landing here” He answered with a slight smile at her joke “And you?” He asked.

CSO

“The Vulcan Science Academy. Very nice.” Alexandra raised her glass to this. “I think I’m here by accident. I was on some cargo ship, we got into a few scuffles and they decided I was battleship material. I’m grateful for the chance, but I do wonder if there’s some officer out there with my name wondering why her transfer orders never arrived.”

-Alexandra Drake

-bump-

“Hah!” James laughed “I sincerely doubt that Captain Parker would make such a mistake regarding the Security Chief on this particular vessel” He answered her raised glass with his own “From what I understand you’ve already got a reputation of your own. You have any specific ambitions in the fleet?”

CSO

“I’m sure the Captain doesn’t make such mistakes, it just feels very strange to be here. Someday, I’d like to have my own command. A small ship, that can work like a well oiled machine.” Alexandra almost lost herself in thought. “And what about yourself?”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

James nodded in approval of her ambition, it was good to know where you wanted to go. To her question, he shrugged “Twenty-Three years in Starfleet and I’ve done just about everything” He said with a smile, standing up and finally joining his conversational partner, grabbing his drink and slowly putting it on her table “Starbases, Think-Tanks, Embassies, teaching. I even served on the Federation Science council for a while” He said the last with amusement as if the concept was amusing “I never had any desire to sit in the Central chair, maybe when I’m old and infirm, well older and infirmer I’ll retire to one of those research stations, maybe grow a beard” He scratched his chin even more amused by the thought.

CSO

“A beard might suit you.” Alexandra chuckled. “What’s wrong with a research station? Maybe not as adventurous, but they do important work.”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

James laughed and shook his head “Nothing wrong with a research station lass, nothing at all. I’ve had my fair share of Adventures and I believe I’ll have more serving here. A research station is a good place for solitude, I have no doubt I’ll return to teach at some point but I think before I finally retire from service I’d like some place to just sit and do Science. Maybe someplace with plenty of Vulcans, They are the most entertaining species to prank of course.”

CSO

Alexandra laughed and nodded her agreement “And aside from an android, probably the easiest to prank.” She sighed the way people do when they remember good times. “Kind of makes me wish there was such a place for security personnel, other than teaching new cadets.”

-Alexandra Drake

James nodded “That’s a good point, Scientists can keep researching and Engineers can keep building, fixing or inventing, but your class doesn’t have many options. I know an old goat who used to be a marine who retired as a Police Chief on some Colony world in the Oed system, perhaps that’s something to do, find a quiet place and use your skills where they aren’t common.”

James Grey

“Hm. I’d never really considered police work. But that’s some time from now anyway.” Alexandra sipped her drink. “I thought about joining the sciences division, when I was entering the academy. Didn’t seem adventurous enough at the time.”

-Lt Alexandra Drake

-bump-

James laughed loudly at that “Hah! It’s true that it’s not the most adventurous of the services in the fleet but we see our fair share of excitement. It doesn’t take a Phaser to make an adventure. Spending a week beating down a virus into submission before it can ravage a planet or figure out the right equation to skim past a black hole, that’s real adventure” He said mirthfully.

James Grey

“Ah true.” Alexandra nodded “They don’t put that in enough Academy pamphlets. They may have just been pushing for security recruits when I rolled through. ‘Adventure, Excitement! or you can sit in a lab and do math, whatever.’”

-Alexandra Drake

James sniffed at that “There are other things to life than excitement, although Starfleet isn’t that place, most people are happy with what they do in their spare time but I don’t think anyone here would be happy doing anything else.”

CSO

Alexandra laughed. “There certainly is more to life than excitement, but try to remember being seventeen and if someone told you that in one department you could go anywhere in the known universe and in another… there’s very fine lab equipment. Maybe it just appealed to my sensibilities.”

-Alexandra Drake

James snorted and smiled widely “What do you think seventeen year old me got most excited for” He said in an amused tone “But you are correct, to each their own. But what besides adventure and excitement do you do, a hobby or something to fill in your sparetime?” He asked

CSO

“I play the violin, and I’m very fond of really terrible holonovels.” Alexandra laughed at herself. “How about yourself?”

-Alexandra Drake

James shrugged “I like to solve Maths problems or puzzles, I also used to enjoy boxing quite a bit but there’s not much boxing on Vulcan” He answered.

CSO

“I suppose there are more ‘logical’ ways to exercise than boxing. Though not as much fun.” Alexandra sipped her drink. “What’s it like living on Vulcan, especially not being Vulcan yourself?”

-Alexandra Drake

“Hot and Damp” James laughed at that “But it’s beautiful in its own way, peaceful. There’s a certain school of thought with their architectural designs, functional and logical but in a way that entices the eye, they have well-kept gardens and despite a lot of it being desert-like they have so much green. Great place for quiet contemplation and deep thought, any philosopher worth his salt should spend time in the Vulcan mountains.”

CSO

“Sounds lovely. Might have to take some leave there sometime. Nice way to get some perspective.” Alexandra considered what vacation on Vulcan might look like. “Sounds like the kind of place a culture based in logic would spring from for certain.”

-Alexandra Drake

James snorted in amusement “The logic didn’t come from the place, I mean sure they built it into a place of Logicical beauty, but the culture of logic was a survival mechanic much like their seeming lack of emotion” He waved an apologetic hand “Apologies, it’s not something they tend to spread out, Let’s just say that their World War Three was a hell of a lot worse than ours and they didn’t have friendly pointy-eared space-faring aliens to come and help them, Logic did that”

CSO

“Every spacefaring society seems to have a tragedy right before they start walking among the stars. I don’t know if that’s true, it just seems to be a pattern.” Alexandra sipped her drink. “Maybe emerging from tragic circumstances encourages the kind of innovation that takes people out into deep space.”

-Alexandra Drake

James laughed “You’re not wrong, it is a common enough occurrence. Not the Ferengi though, If what some Ferengi merchant told me they hadn’t even had a war in their history, I think they even bought Warp travel from a neighbour” He laughed at that, each species had a unique way of getting out there, some more different than others.

CSO

“I wonder what they traded for it?” Alexandra mused. “Third rule of acquisition: never spend more for an acquisition than you have to.” She paused and chuckled lightly “My next door neighbor at the Academy was ferengi. You hear things.”

-Alexandra Drake

James nodded “Yes I’ve heard of those rules, never had much interest in commerce or rules regarding it. But it is an interesting question, what could be the monetary value of something as important as Warp travel. I understand that not everyone follows General Order one but what could a pre-warp civilization have to barter with someone who has already achieved warp travel” he posed the question seriously, there were many things of interest developed on different worlds but monetary value was not a concept that came easily to humans.

CSO

It was certainly an interesting question. “Maybe there’s something of significant value in their home system, a dilithium supply or somesuch that a warp capable society would need.”

-Alexandra Drake

James shrugged “Perhaps, maybe a look at their historical files would help. Although I’m fairly certain that you have to use gold-pressed latinum as currency to read any of their files, probably metered by each second you spend reading multiplied by every word consumed” He laughed at that as if it were a grand joke “Dickering is a way of life there I suppose”

CSO

Alexandra laughed as well. “I’ll be sure to go to the bank before I search it up.” She laughed again. “I’m a little bit surprised they haven’t tried to replicate their success by selling warp for a profit.”

-Alexandra Drake

James shrugged “Starfleet doesn’t take kindly to that, besides they aren’t exactly known as great explorers. Perhaps there isn’t as much profit in it as one would imagine”

CSO

“Perhaps. You know, I’ve been very concerned since I got here with getting things done. Doing my job as well as I can so Captain Parker doesn’t regret accepting my transfer. But that hasn’t left much time to get to know the rest of the crew. Right now that seems quite a shame.”

-Alexandra Drake

James nodded “I agree, it’s quite the duties to perform on a vessel such as this and for you, I don’t doubt that they are magnified for someone in charge of Security of a battleship” He laughed softly “At least all I have to do is make sure we don’t go blind to what’s out there and avoid blowing up my labs…” He lifted his glass and said into it rather gently “Again”

CSO

“Wait wait wait. Again? There’s a story there and I’m very much interested.” Alexandra sipped her drink and wondered to herself if it was completely unintentional or something that just got out of hand. As science often does.

-Alexandra Drake

A new face popped into the lounge as if apparently looking for someone.

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James blinked in surprise as if he’d just realised what he said, he grinned sheepishly and rubbed the back of his head “I have unusually bad luck on occasion whenever the upper brass shows interest in my work, usually it’s just an innocent mixing of chemicals or moderately complex mathematical formulas. However, a wrong drop placed where it shouldn’t and kabloom” He chuckled “I almost blew up an entire wing of the embassy on Corvan V when I was stationed there because the computer couldn’t handle a simple logic paradox, that was after I tricked the Starfleet Commandant to throw a pie in his own face when he got a little too nosy” He tapped his nose and his grin widened “But no worries, I hardly blew anything up on Vulcan…” He finally whispered “Accidentally”

CSO

“Well if the science lab mysteriously explodes, I know who to look for.” Alexandra said with a light smile. “Though I don’t know if you get the kind of interference here that makes you want to blow up a lab.” She noted the appearance of Ensign Suana. “Isn’t that one of yours? New arrival?”

-Alexandra Drake

James laughed at her first comment then turned around to look at the Ensign “Yes. Ensign Suana, a recent Academy graduate. Haven’t had a chance to see what he’s capable of but I don’t doubt he’s qualified getting stationed here.”

James Grey

Ensign Suana would then spot his superior Lieutenant Grey. He’d visibly smile and approach the table where he was sitting.

‘’Ensign Rudolf Suana. Science section. I believe that you are my superior, lieutenant…”

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

“You would be correct” James said before turning around, a bemused grin on his face “You look like you’re looking for someone son”

CSO

“Correct. I wouldn’t be talking to you if I didn’t know who that person is.”

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James stared at the Ensign with a very confused grin “You wouldn’t would you?” His voice was very amused “And pray tell then why speaking to me may alleviate the suffering of looking for this mysterious stranger?” He asked in a flowery voice

James Grey

‘’You’re my commanding officer. I’m here to introduce myself to you, sir.’‘

Ensign Ruby Suana - Science Officer

Alexandra smiled. “Well, welcome to the ship. Who exactly are you looking for?” She inquired, taking a gentle sip of her drink.

-Alexandra Drake

Rudy’s eyes jumped to James as if insinuating he was wanting to talk to him.

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James shot the Security Chief an amused glance before returning his gaze to the young ensign “Well lad, speak your mind” He said.

CSO

“May I use the laboratory facilities?”

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James raised an eyebrow “Yes son you can, when you reported to me you started your duties. You are welcome to use your free time in the labs so long as you don’t interfere with official duties of course.”

CSO

‘’Understood sir. May I take a seat?’‘

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James cocked an eyebrow then turned to Alexandra “Do you mind if the young man joins us?” He asked.

CSO

“Not at all. Have a seat, ensign.” Alexandra smiled kindly. “We’re just swapping stories.”

-Alexandra Drake

‘’Thank you,’‘ Rudy said, sitting down. “So! Who wants to learn about astro-geography!’‘

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James laughed at that “If you have a story regarding that then fine but a classroom this is not” He said raising his glass and sipping “Unless of course that suits your fancy Lieutenant?” He asked Alexandra, his amusement clear.

CSO

Alexandra looked out the window. “I don’t see the Golden Gate Bridge…” she laughed. “I’m glad you enjoy your work so much, but we’re off duty. Just relax and have a drink with us.”

-Alexandra Drake

Rudy would comply and get a drink without adding another word.

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer

James chuckled “You can still speak, son. Come on, tell us a little about yourself.” He’d already had the interview with the young officer but an interview did not a man make.

CSO

‘’I’m human, as you can note, and I am from Canada. That’s a start, isn’t it?’‘

Ensign Rudy Suana - Science Officer
