=/\=As promised, six of these ships will join you in your defence of your borders against the Breen. The other two will escort the Torak back to Tholian space. Torak out.=/\=

GM

Kolar walked on the bridge in time to catch the last message. “Oh, so the enemy of my enemy and all.” He glanced over to the captain. “Keep the spinners in 3 pairs, so they are together if they want to do their web thing, but able to protect our flanks as well?”

Kolar

It took about three hours to reach SB 310. The Breen had not engaged them yet but they were moving about just outside the defences of the Starbase.

GM

“They are just hanging around out there…” He looked at the tactical screen. “They must be up to something… Science?”

The Captain did as his XO had suggested. As they neared the battle theater he sent the order to the CIC.

=^=CIC launch your birds. Your going to do it like the old cavalry did. Harass their flanks and rear guard. Do the damage you can.=^=

=^=Federation and Tholian fleet. Go to pattern Charlie.=^=

Pattern Charlie was a center with two extended flanks angled inward using the Starbase in the rear as the center point to form up on. The spinners were on the flanks of that formation. It would be a formidable formation to attack and they would have to look out for the fighters and bombers from the Wing.

Parker CO

Kolar

Even after Pattern Charlie was formed, the fighters halted just outside of weapons range. They seemed to be waiting for the Federation forces to fire the first volley …

GM

The Captain was a patient man when it came to his strategy. He much preferred to wait out the Breen and force them into attacking a strong defense.

“Scan the area CSO. I want to know if there is a cricket on an asteroid out past those Breen. I don’t want sudden reinforcements showing up,” He ordered.

=^=Breen ships. This is Captain Parker of the USS Olinski. You are in Federation space. Declare your intentions or depart. We do not want to engage you but will if necessary=^=-

He thought it was tough enough but also allowed room for them to get out of the fight if they were inclined to do so.

Parker CO

James, having taken his seat after returning to the bridge with the first officer, nodded “Cricket scans in effect Sir” He said with much too straight face but did as ordered, starting a general scan followed by a more detailed scan, focusing on areas giving little detail or any oddities.

CSO

There were no other ships in the vicinity. Even long range scans showed that there was two fleets of Breen ships, a total of 10 ships.

“Nothing new on sensors, Breen fleets consists of ten ships total” James announced from his station.

=/\=Captain Parker. Did your government send you to meet your death, seeing that your actions was a declaration of war against the Breen. Perhaps, with your death, the Federation might be able to beg for clemency.=/\=

GM

=^= Breen Leader. Stand down and leave Federations space. You are in violation of the Treaty of Bajor. =^=

Sid knew the Breen were ready for the fight and would not, in his opinion, now back down unless they were given a hard lesson. He knew they had no dampening tech that would currently work on the Federation. That old trick had seen its day. They were known to be excellent pilots and daring. Their ships were impressive. Long and dagger like however they had a weakness. It was heat. The organic nature of the ships systems and the Breen themselves were, by most intelligence reports, susceptible to high heat.

=/\=Your declaration of war first violated the treaty!=/\= came the reply.

“CSO the Breen are susceptible to heat as are their ships. Find me a weak point in their shielding. Engineering I want to modify the reaction in a photo torpedo spread. I dont want maximum damage. I want a set to have maximum heat yield. If we can punch through and then light them up it may be better than structural damage.” He ordered.

“Copy” James called from his station. He did as ordered, looking for a weak point in their shields, focusing on where Breen shielding had stress points in past altercations with Starfleet.

According to the sensors, the weakest parts of the shields (or the greatest stress points) was at the ventral part where the lateral wing emerge, both port and starboard, from the body of the ship. There was an exhaust close to the stern of the ship that is not connected to the engine. It was probably an exhaust linked to the environmental system of the ship.

“Kolar I want us to program in Charlie Delta. They will have to attack our formation and they think we will just absorb the blow and we will. Have the Tholians spin webs to their rear and the flanks spread outward a little. The fighters will make hit and run attacks while the Tholians web them in from the rear. We will trap them in an inverted triangle. Any ship that tries and escape the fighters have to keep them busy. ” He said looking at his XO and giving him that last chance to add to the plan.

“COS get ready for boarding parties but prepare to do the same. Tactical gear and weapons. If we can get on one of their ships we will. Bring detonation devices. Medical there will be casualties. ”

Parker CO

CSO

Kolar started adding in the protocols in the tactical system and linked it with the Tholians as he did so he spoke. “They are waiting for a reason.” Kolar looked at the map. “Maybe they want us to attack them so they can claim to be the aggrieved party.” He tilted his head. “But i don’t think so. They aren’t looking for that. Perhaps a pincer trap… cloaked mine field?”

“Whatever it might be we shouldn’t fight in space of their choosing.”

Kolar

“I agree. If they want to fight they need to attack and that is squarely on our playing field.” He replied.

Sid was a study of old Earth battles and particularly those of the American Civil war. During that war most people admired General’s Robert E. Lee, Grant and Stonewall Jackson’s daring offensive maneuvers. He preferred James Longstreet. He always had the enemy attack his strong position and then execute a stronger counter attack when the offensive stalled.

Parker CO

=^=Olinski, this is Ricochet. Fighter squads are in position and ready to engage the enemy. Ready to defend Tholian Spinners and attack Breen ships. Just waiting on your green light.=^=

Ricochet (CAG)

30 minutes passed with both sides waiting. Then, suddenly, the Breen moved. They dipped, moving so that they would come in at the ventral tip of the starbase.

GM

James forwarded the information regarding the shields he’d gathered together to the tactical stations and to the Flight command to be sent to their fighters. “I’ve sent the data, Ventral side where the lateral wings emerge on either side. Some sort of environmental exhaust where the most stress is gathered” He called out.

CSO

“Like a pack of wolves.” Kolar read the ship positions. “Even a Bear can be taken down by a pack of wolves… They are moving to isolate and attack the weak point.” The only thing that confused him was targeting the sturdiest vessel. By time they did real damage to the Starbase they would be flanked by the Olinski and the fighters…

Kolar

A notification could be heard on the bridge from the airlock personnel that a newly minted Ensign has arrived aboard the USS Brian A. Olinski.

Whoever Is Responsible For The Airlock Security

As the Bren fighters moved, they suddenly split into two, diverging from what was their initial target. Four moving to the left wing of the formation and six moving towards the other wing.

GM

“Scan those fighters.” Kolar wanted to be sure they didn’t have any specialized weaponry.

The fighters had the usual Breen weaponry. (see https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Breen_ship)

=^=CAG leave a light coverage on the starboard wing. Mass and overwhelm the small unit and then take the larger.=&= It was a well known tactic to mass your forces to counter a superior number… which the Breen didn’t have in either case… so for them splitting their number was tactical suicide.

Kolar.

When the CAG fighters started to move, the four fighters took evasive action, retreating about 200 kilometres before turning to move towards the six other ships.

The six ships started firing on the fighters and the web spinners in the right wing. One of the fighters was disabled, taking heavy damage. Once drifting, the Breen ships took no notice of it, focussing on the others which were still active.

GM

The four Breen ships that had divided from the main group and was now about to join the six others made a sudden manoeuvre and fired two torpedoes each at the Olinski. They hit the shields bringing the shields down to 20%. Just as suddenly as they turned to fire at the Olinski, the suddenly turned to join with the other six attacking Breen ships.

“Geezus…” Kolar didn’t see that they could get so many torpedoes on target so quickly… That was some significant impacts… He wanted to order the Olinski to pull back but it wasn’t his call. But he could stand fast, and make a defensive move, “Rotate shields bring the less damaged arcs towards the enemy.”

The six Breen ships were now focussing their fire on one particular web spinner, the outermost one. Whilst not as manoeuvrable as the web spinners, the Breen ships did manage to bring down its shields down, whilst at the same time scoring hits against the Federation fighters. The Breen ships were not unscathed. Their shields took a beating as well from the weapons of the fighters and the web spinners. Despite taking the hits, none of their shields went offline, though.

GM

Kolar

OOC: I’m back and would like to jump in, how can the CMO be useful?
Rusty

OOC: I posted in another thread about an injury. ;)

Kenson

After the fighters engaged the Breen ships, the Breens’ shields were weakened considerably. The ten ships then focussed on their fire on the flank trying to get the more manoeuvrable fighters first before getting to the larger ships.

GM

That made more sense to Kolar. The smaller ships could be destroyed easier lowering the Federation firepower more easily then targeting the big ships first. “Helm course 048 mark 353. Push us in, give them something else to shoot at.” Kolar didn’t want the small fighters to get picked off if the Olinski could support them.

“Mass fire on the closest Breen.”

Kilar

The Captain sat back and allowed his XO to continue the fight. After all he was doing great.

Sidney

OOC: Without reading the whole thing can I get a bullet brief of what is happening?

Sidney

OOC: I hope this helps : There were 10 Breen ships . In the fight, one Red squad fighter was disabled. One spinner was in trouble and one Breen ship had lost her shields. What happens next is found below and the next thread.

IC: The closest Breen ship received heavy damage. The last shot of the phasers penetrated its hull at its weakest and there was a great explosion. The Olinski received torpedoes from the Breen ship before it exploded. The last torpedo had brought considerable damage to Deck 7 and there was extensive damage to the hull of the crew quarters and the phaser array situated at that deck.

GM

OOC: Perfect. Thanks.
IC:

“Damage report. Causality report” The Captain called out as the ship was rocked by the torpedos. He knew they had damage and most likely casualties.

Parker CO

Alexandra tapped at her console. “Torpedo hit on deck 7, phaser array damaged, and the hull has been severely damaged.” Casualty reports might take longer. She nonetheless looked for any injuries or worse.

-CoS

Kolar wasn’t the sort to curse, but one did come to his mind, he glanced over to the Parker to see if he wanted to take the battle away from Kolar. See no intent from him, “Pivot the big ‘O’ 180 degrees, so the dorsal decks, shield arc three and deck 7 facing away from the enemy. Bring us to 3,000 kilometers of the damaged Tholan.”

=^=XO to the CAG, we need a squadron to protect deck 7, ventral side., acknowledge.=^=

Kolar XO

=^=Copy that, X. Blue squad. Break off and cover mothers damagd side. She can’t take many more hits like that. Everybody else, keep hammering away.=^=

=^=Blue squad on it, CAG=^= came the reply from Blue Squad leader.

Ricochet (CAG)

Sid did not interfere. He saw Kolar had the handle of the battle. He was in the zone so to speak. He knew it well. He had been there many times. When decisions flowed to your mind naturally.

“Keep the pressure on them Kolar. They will break before we do.” He said between the two of them.

Parker CO

That was true, however pressure and casualties went hand in hand. Kolar didn’t like any casualties…

During the fire fight, another CAG fighter was lost and another Breen fighter was destroyed. The CAG fighters and the Tholian web spinners had sustained considerable damage, although still battle worthy. The Olinski herself was holding on splendidly despite the damaged Deck 7. The shields were keeping at 60% through the efforts of engineering but they had used up 60% of their torpedoes. Considerable energy were diverted from many non essential parts of the ship to shore up the shields.

There were only 8 Breen fighters left. 4 had lost shields and sustained considerable damage. The other 4 had weakened shields and had not sustained any damage.

OOC: Please see CAG post for the next part …

GM

The Captain knew they had the upper hand now. I brilliant execution of the plan by Kolar and Ric. He also knew they had lost good people and the final push would lose more. He had a choice of contacting the Breen and demanding surrender. He thought even the Breen would know this was over. However that is not what he ordered.

“Push hard Kolar. Give them everything we have. I don’t want a Breen ship left.” He ordered.

Maybe it sounded harsh but he knew that the message the Breen had to receive from this battle was that Fleet 5 was not an easy target and the Federation not the enemy they wanted. Anything short would only encourage them to reset and try again.

Parker CO

James turned around in his chair and looked at the Captain, his face had turned very still and emotionless. For a moment he considered saying something then turned back to his duties, scanning and relaying information from his console to the Tactical console and the CIC. He understood the necessary of battle upon occasion but there was no way he could agree with not giving quarter, but he wouldn’t speak out, The Captain had given his orders and made his decision. He used a portion of his attention to give a silent prayer for the fallen.

CSO

One disabled ship was drifting towards the Olinksi but not on collision course.

“Maneuvering thrusters, Keep that ship at range.” There was a slim possibility of detonation. “Photon torpedoes, all launchers make ready.” Kolar was going to do a rotating photon spin… that would be risky but very damaging. “Helm, prep for 360 spin to expose all weapons on Breen at 114.”

About five minutes later, the fighters and the Olinski manage to reduce the Breen ships to three. One was being trapped by the Tholian web spinners and the other two were about to make a retreat.

GM
Kolar

The Captain almost fist pumped the air. Kolar was executing the battle perfectly and the crew responding just as well. The Breen had made a mistake to take on the Olinski but this was the Breen. He knew he was going to draw criticism for not making a play for peace when he had the Breen on the ropes and instead of going for the jugular but he also knew it was the best way to keep the Breen from coming back for more.

“Take out any ship that can be offensive.” He reiterated his no quarter order. He was not going to take a ship out that was dead in the water but any ship that could be used offensively was a target. That included ramming capabilities.

Parker CO

Sensors showed that the disabled ship was actually offline totally, even life support. There were life signs but if they wanted to self destruct, they would have to do it by manually (not via computer) detonating the weapons they have on board.

The other two ships were heading out of Federations space at full impulse and would probably engage warp within the minute.

OOC: Sorry for the AWOL, work was kicking my A$$
Luke

=^=Disregard the disabled ship. All ships that can, fire on the retreating Breen ships=^=

The Captain gave the order himself this time. He knew they would not stop them from leaving but he wanted them to know this would be the cost of engaging in the first place.

“Put room between us and that disabled Breen ship. I don’t want a surprise.” He quietly ordered to Kolar.

Parker CO

“Course 081 mark 12, two thirds impulse power,” Kolar nodded towards the helm officer.

The fighters and the Olinski began firing and the barrage caused the shields of both the Breen ships to fail. Their rear torpedo tubes returned fire. Some of the fighters took out some of the torpedoes before they could hit the Olinski, but the Olinski had their shields reduced to just 5%.

GM

The ship rocked as the torpedos that made it through hit the ship. Sidney eased back down into his chair. He saw the Breen retreating into the distance and knew they would go to warp. However that last hit made sure they would not turn back to fight or even think about it in the near future. He looked over a Kolar.

“Fine job XO.” He said. “Lets get repairs underway with shields a priority. Its unlikely any will return but I don’t want to have no shields if they did.” He ordered.

=^=Damage reports to the XO station.=^= Kolar looked over at his panel… the bad news would roll in soon. =^=Causalities to medical=^=

=^=See what ships need the most help and lets get it to them. Recall all the fighters. Recall all fighters but the ones with some torpedo’s left and in good enough shape to do a perimeter control. See what we can do for the Tholians.=^=

He said all of this on all coms.

“I want department status reports as fast as is possible.” He added to the Bridge crew.

Parker CO

Kolar

“Helm issue a surrender order to the damaged Breen ships. They are to stand down. Disarm and drop any shields. We will treat them within the confines of Galactic treaties.” He ordered.

“Aye Sir.” The Helm officer said.

=^=Breen ships still in Federation space. Stand down. Drop Shields if any, Disarm weapon systems. You are prisoner of the Federation of Planets will be treated according to all treaties and conventions.=^=

Parker CO

The two Breen ships’ weapons systems went offline and a message of surrender was sent to the Olinski.

GM

“I wished the demonstrated this level of wisdom, before they invaded our space and fired on us.”

As the fighting subsided James started going over his systems for the report. He relayed orders to his teams to go over them with a fine-tooth comb as he himself focused on keeping an eye on the senors making sure that nothing crept up on them.
