Walking through the ship brought back many memories for the Midasian. She’d been away for a long while, but was excited to be returning. When the assignment packet came through and she saw she was being assigned to the Olinski, Shirazi almost called in a favor to make the offer go away. However, she’d never been one to back down from a fight or a difficult situation, so she made the decision to face the problem head on. As she crossed the bridge and stood at the Ready Room door, she prepared herself by taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, because the ‘problem’ was sitting at the desk on the other side of the door. Her lover from a life time ago. What would he look like now? How would he receive her? Good questions—time to find out the answers…

She palmed the chime, alerting the Capt he had a visitor.

—Thorne, CMO

The Captain was busy. So busy in fact he had not looked closely at the orders for the new CMO. A job that changed hands a lot and as it was he had stopped putting much attention on the next one who rotated through, saw combat and then left. The Olinski was not an exploration vessel by nature even though it did its share of that too. It was the tip of a very long spear that was used to take on the problems that other ships did not. A very sharp tip he may add. He knew one was coming but for him this could just be another repair report from the recent battle.

“Enter.” He called out.

The man behind the desk was older but basically still the same. Gray had overtaken the sides of his head and the top had lost its brown color and was now a mixed shade of brownish, blackish. grayish.

The doors parted and there he was. Older…probably wiser too, but still the man who had made her heart flutter a few years ago. There was gray at his temples now and a few wrinkles at the corners of his eyes, but it was Sid. Surprised that he wasn’t already looking up, curious about what she looked like now, Shirazi stepped into the room. “Sid…”

As soon as his head snapped up and those green eyes caught her in their sights, she felt her heart rate quicken. So, that answered one of the questions she’d asked herself—did she still feel something for him? Apparently so, but what it was and what she would do with it were still mysteries.

“I apologize, Captain. Cmdr Shirazi Thorne reporting in as the new Chief Medical Officer.”

OOC: You didn’t fix the rank problem I addressed in my email.

—Thorne, CMO

Sid was shocked for a second and did not understand. In fact he said nothing and looked at the orders and then right in his face he saw the name.

“Shirazi?” He questioned. “I mean Commander Thorne. CMO?”

It comforted her to know her appearance was a shock to him too. “Yes, Sir. Since leaving the Olinski several years ago, I pursued a degree in medicine. Since I carried certification in both psychology and medicine, I concentrated on learning everything I could about the latter. I’m perfectly capable of running Sickbay in case you’re having any doubts.” She kept her voice as neutral as she could. Her assignment on the ship didn’t come without a couple of red flags. One was her past relationship with Sid and the other was that she used to XO there. She had to be careful not to upset the delicate balance that would exist until the crew accepted her as the Chief Medical Officer.

“I must admit this has caught me back. I am surprised I was not given more notification but given our situation with CMO’s its not unexpected.” He said. “I have no doubts you cannot carry out your duties and are an excellent CMO. I just did not see that path for you. Ok no use and making this more awkward so I will treat you as if you are just another CMO hitting my ship. Please set up your operations and get with Cmd. Kolar to check in too.”

He straightened in his chair and took on the more stoic role many of the crew saw him as nowaways.

Looking at him through the blue wrap around glasses she wore to cut the brightness of the lighting, Shirazi watched as Sid made a point to pull back from acknowledging anything they’d shared in the past. It hurt her deeply, but she didn’t let on. It was something for her to think about later in the quiet of her quarters with a drink in her hand. “Thank you, Sir. I’ll go see the First Officer now.” She turned and headed for the door. Somehow she’d thought her return to the Olinski would be met with a little more warmth than what the Captain exhibited. Lesson learned.

—Thorne, CMO

Sid let her go and then slumped into his chair slightly. What on earth did Shirazi think? A warning maybe? Hey its been a long time and I know we were lovers and you my Captain and I your XO but I was thinking about coming back as your CMO. I mean he was still reeling from it. He had reacted maybe not his best but then also how else was the Captain going to do when meeting his new CMO. He would have time to think on it. If she was upset or expected more he did not have it to give in the moment. After all the Sid of those days was long gone. That was 3 XO’s ago and a lot of things in between. In many ways two strangers had just met with a haunting familiarity between them.
