The Captain saw the notice and again felt the weight of command and the years in the seat. Ric had announced to him that he was leaving for an extended absence from Starfleet. It was not unexpected. He had served a long time and the last battle saw a lot of pilots lose their lives and suffer severe trauma. Ric had done his for Starfleet and he deserved a successful battle as the end cap to his career. No one wanted to lose crew but a pilot was a risk taker and he went out of the service the way he came in, all guns blazing.

After reviewing his options the Captain made a decision and called Lt. Primage to this office. He now awaited her arrival.

Xandra had put the most recent set of birds to bed and the next Squadron was on deck for the next duty. Hearing from the Deck Chief that the Captain wanted to see her, she headed straight for his office. No doubt he wanted a report of their recent flight. It seemed odd that Ric hadn’t called her for debriefing first. Perhaps they would do it together, the Captain and the CAG.

Still in her flight suite, Xandra arrived at the Captain’s office and tapped the chime to announce her arrival. She looked a bit haggard around the edges and her usually pristine coifed, regulation hairdo was not a tattered mess of loose tendrils still barely coiled around her head. More of it was wisping in her face. She brushed some errants strands behind her ears and tried to make herself presentable.

“Enter.” He called out as the doors opened.

“Lt. please come in and have a seat.” He said.

“Lt. I have some news for you. Ric has decided to take a leave of absence from Starfleet. It was a sudden decision but I also know it was something he was pondering. A lot of hours in that seat. He is due.” He explained.

“Thank you, Sir,” the younger pilot sat down and began formulating her debrief in her head to be sure she had it straight. But as the Captain made the announcement about Ric, her heart stopped. Sure he’d talked about needing a break. He’d said things were bad enough he’s been seeing a counselor and he even confided in her that he felt himself slipping. He’d been too long without vacation and it had taken its toll.

But to leave… suddenly… without word to her? She could only hope he’s left a comm for her in their quarters.

It took nearly a minute for her to compose herself before she replied. “Yes, he ummm…,” she physically shook herself and locked the pain into the far reaches of her mind. She’s deal with it later. When she woke next, she was once more the composed pilot and Wing Leader the Captain knew. “Yes, Sir. It was due. I’m glad he’ll get his rest. Shall I give you the debrief then?” She had just assumed that was what he’d called her in here for. No doubt Red Leader was standing by to give his report. So she wasn’t going to waffle and stammer and take up the Captain’s valuable time. She squared her jaw and lifted her chin slightly. She would do her job as she always had. Nothing else mattered right now.

“Yes Lt. You can give me a department debrief. As of this date, unless you tell me otherwise I am promoting you to CAG with the rank of Lt. Commander.” He said directly. “I need someone who can carry on Ric’s leadership and you have proven yourself at the Squad level and beyond. I can look around the Fleet but we both know experienced combat air wing leaders are rare.”

Parker CO

Xandra was a little stunned, but recovered quick enough. “I, thank you, Sir. Thank you. I will do my best to fill his shoes. Ric was, is an amazing CAG. I’ll find another Green Squad Leader by tomorrow, as well. Green Squad is down for the next forty eight hours. So there wouldn’t be any interruption in rotation schedules while the changes are made.”

She then spent the next five minutes, or so, giving him the pilot’s view of their mission. He already knew the losers from both sides. But she also gave him the rundown on which pilots had performed within duty parameters, which had performed above then, and also which had performed below. She asked about sending one or pilots into Red Squad to even the squads out in regards to their losses. And she asked about promoting one of the newest and brightest Ensigns to Lieutenant JG.

Taking a breath she concluded. “I think that’s everything, Sir. I’ll have to check the duty roster to be sure everything is set. And I’d like a glance at the mission briefing from the current activities as well. I want to be sure the reports and numbers are in order since Ric won’t be doing the end reviews and jacket entries.” Despite her heart being in pain, she bucked up and stepped straight into the expected duties. She wasn’t gonna let personal feelings interfere or put lives in jeopardy.
