After getting things moving in Sickbay, Abel made his way to the second deck and the Captaon’s office. He made sure his uniform was presentable and then pressed the chime. He rocked on his heels momentarily and cleared his throat somewhat nervously, and then tookna deep breath.

Abel, CMO

To say the Captain was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new CMO was un understatement. He had not had a CMO, on a regular basis, in so long they had just gotten used to doing things on the temporary permanent basis. So when he was told the CMO was at his door he hoped against hope this CMO would remain. The Olinski was not an easy post for the Chief Medical Officer. You see SF in these days had not been a rea war in some time and the Olinski was still one of those rare ships that was thrust into combat situations or at least ones that tended to see a battle when others did not.

“Enter.” He called out as the door swooshed open.

A bright smile on a handsome face led the way into the room. “Captain Parker? Lieutenant Commander Siegfried Abel, your new Chief Medical Officer. A pleasure, sir.” and he held out his hand to his new CO.

Abel, CMO

“Lt. Cmd please come in and have a seat.” He responded as he shook the extended hand firmly.

He then sat down himself and smiled.

“Well I would be lying if I told you this post has been sought after. A lot want it but few stay at it Abel.” He added putting his cards on the table.

Abel nodded and a small smile spread across his face. “From what I can tell from the state of the medical records, Captain, I won’t argue that point with you.” and he chuckled slightly. “But I can say that not only did I request this posting, I am excited by it. My last ship, the Odin, was a wonderful place to be. But here I believe I can find not only the chance to provide support and care to a notable crew; but I can hopefully find a place that will allow me to have a certain amount of… well… anonymity.” and he paused for a moment and then said “I am hoping that you have had the chance to review my file and are aware of my… extracurricular engagement, sir? And I can assure you, it will not distract or detract from me providing the best care I can to the crew. They are my priority, I want to be very clear on that.”

Abel, CMO

“Lt. Cmd you are not the first person on this ship to be wealthy. In fact I have a new Ops officer who has enjoyed a life of luxury and now is the lowest man on the pole on the Bridge. So its not altogether unique. However I am impressed what you have chosen to do with that wealth. As it is and as you say the ship has to come first and its crew. How you manage that balance is up to you.” The Captain replied.

Abel nodded, and the said “I appreciate that level of candor, Captain. I will also add that there is a positive aspect to my other work. We will, from time to time, be able to receive new equipment and such from the Foundation. Nothing without Star Fleet approval, of course; but we can, with your approval, act as the final testing phase of these new projects. We found that to be quite beneficial on the Odin, sir.”

Abel, CMO

“Of course I am open to any advantage we can get but lets cross that bridge later. Right now I am more interested in what you will bring to the CMO role. Even though we are in dire straights for a CMO we have also functioned without one. So what is it that you bring more than others that makes you a fit for the Olinski?” He asked.

He had a good feeling for the man and his record was solid but he had seen that before as well.

Parker CO

Abel smiled slightly and said “Well first of all, I am a stickler for record keeping. And while the ship’s medical backlog is… well… let us just say ‘significant’.. I am undaunted. I also demand a good deal from the medical staff, but I balance that with skill assessments and extra training I design to make sure the staff is not only functioning here well… but that my people know that I want them to be successful no matter where they go. I believe my greatest achievement as a Medical Officer is to have my junior officers promoted and transferred to positions of more authority and responsibility.” Abel paused a moment and then said “I also hate moving. Hopefully that translates into a longer tenure here than my predecessors.”

Abel, CMO

“I support and encourage your officer development mindset as it is mine as well. I sincerely hope you are here for some time too. The Olinski needs someone in this role. However I would be remiss to tell you that you will find yourself in dangers way at times and this ship has a combat first profile so sometimes your more combat medic and CMO after the fact. Are you ok with that?” The Captain asked.

Parker CO

Abel looked at Parker and said “If I was afraid of getting bloody, Captain, I wouldn’t be a very good doctor. And I would be an even worse excuse for a Star Fleet doctor. We aren’t known for not getting into trouble.”

Abel, CMO

Bump

“Well I am sure you have seen a lot already. However at times the Olinski is put into combat and its not three or four injured crew but dozens and that is if we are not called on to give back more than we took. Then we must also assist even our enemies and sometimes that is tough. I have rotated through a number of veteran Doctors as CMO who thought they were up to it and instead chose a more tranquil posting.” The Captain said as if to clarify.

He did not doubt Abel’s expertise but resolve had little to do with expertise. The man sounded the part that was for sure.
