The lounge of the Olinski was similar to that of any other lounge in the fleet. Certain elements were always present. A couple sat off to the side sitting close enough for one to surmise the table was reserved and you should not saunter over. A group of pilots back from patrol that were probably drinking too much and would be slightly late to the morning debriefing took up the largest table in the space. The smattering of people in smaller groups spreading gossip from the ship or what they overheard about other ships filled in the spaces in-between.

Kolar surveyed the room and debated where to sit. As the XO it was always tricky. Sitting at the bar alone made one look depressed and sullen. Joining a group meant the conversational dynamic would be interrupted because no one really wanted to relax with the 2iC at their table. Finally deciding on a table out of the way but not hidden in a corner ended up being his final destination. It gave the impression someone could approach but was far enough out of the room’s entry path no one would feel obligated to say hi as they passed through.

As Balfor sat and waited for his food, his mind drifted to the upcoming weekend. For the first time in weeks he had scored a full two days off. It was rare being the XO that something wasn’t scheduled. He had never been the type to spend his off duty carousing and drinking. He was calmer phase of his life. Picking up his PaDD after hearing a beep, a smile curled the very edges of his lips. The quartermaster had promised his item would be delivered before the weekend and true to his word it had arrived. This at least would solve what he was going to do for the weekend.

Science officer Ensign Copecky was a brash and new officer to the Olinski. He felt he had all the answers and was not shy to tell anyone what they were. He saw the XO and former somewhat famous in his own right as a Science Officer in the Lounge. Almost an unheard-of event. So he made his way over not having a really good gauge of the fact it may or may not be in his place to just walk up to the XO.

“Greetings Sir. If I may sit, I am sure you can enlighten me on some points I have been pondering.” He said forgetting wholly to even introduce himself.

NPC Ensign Copecky

Raising his eyes from the PaDD, Balfor looked up at the Ensign standing before him. The greenness of his time in Starfleet made him look positively like the potted fichus next to the door. All new officers had that aura about them: shoes so shiny you could look down and shave in the reflection, uniform with seams so crisp you could get a papercut, and the look in their eye indicating they were ready to polish a bulkhead or take on a Cardassian at a moments notice. Right now however he was looking to take on the XO.

“Depends on what points need enlightening,” he gestured to the chair across from him. “Ensign Copecky.” Kolar knew the name of every member of the over thousand crew.

OOC: Hope you don’t mind me popping in.

IC: As the XO spoke tot he ensign the doors to the lounge opened and Rebecca walked in. She had changed pout of her uniform and into soet9ng mor comfortable, to say she was happy to be out her monkey suit, would be a massive understatement. Rebecca wore urban camo cargo trousers, black combat boot, a black crop top and an old style leather bomber jacket.

Surveying the room she head over to the bar and took a seat “Give me the strongest thing you’ve got” she said simply as she watched the room.

Lieut Lane (CIO)

“If Multiphasic scanning is by all accounts effective then why do we not employ them more often?” He asked as he eagerly sat down.

Copecky NPC

OPs wonderkind, or so he believed he might be, Ensign Corbin Dallas strode in. He looked around and saw the interesting if not rough looking new CIO. He swung himself into the chair next to her.

“How did you end up in a place like this?” He asked cheerfully if not overly optimistic.

Dallas

Rebecca rolled her eyes as Dallas approached her, Luckily the bartender had come back with her drink “Leave the bottle” she said coldly ass he took a swig of the drink from the glass.

“If you mean t this room I walked” she said sarcashi clear in he voice “If you mean working on this ship. The usual way, kill a few people get noticed by star fleet, kill a few star fleet officers who try to arrest you, work for Starfleet, don’t die when they try to get ya killed. You know the usual” she said simply, it was hard to tell if se joking or not.

“Well as long as I am not the one being killed I guess I can live with that.” He said rolling with the joke, if indeed it was.

“Yea I meant here on the Olinski.” He added. “I mean its a combat ship and you look like you are ready for that. I mean in a good way. However the CO is a strict one and I’m thinking you have a fly by your seat of the pants who cares about rules mindset.”

“That’s why I’m here. Star fleet has a knack of getting its self almost completely destroyed on regular basis. So someone with a brain started asking why is that. And they came to the conclusion. Order and rules re good and all day to day, but strict adherence to the rules of combat and fighting styles. Leads to the enemy knowing what you’re going to do next. Which leads to captains with a stick up their back sides, leading more and more people to pointless painful death.” Rebecca said coldly

“Me on the other hand, well I’m unpredictable, I use weapons people don’t know how to combat and I’m as likely to shoot you as I am to let you go.” she said her tone unchanging as she took a swig of her drink. “Which means I am a rouge element I combat. It’s either that or the stuff shirt admiral that run star fleet hope being on a combat ship will actually, finally get me killed.” she added.

Lieut Lane (CIO)

‘Well here is to not getting killed, as I am a big fan of not doing that.” He said and raised his glass as if to clink them together.

“At any rate the CO damn well busted me down and would have if I had a lower rank to be busted down to. Apparently making a command decision is well for those in command. Lesson learned.” He said thinking of his recent dismissal from the bridge and short term confined to hsi quarters.

“There might not be lower ranks.” Kolar commented unhelpfully. “But when they run out of ranks the start looking at discharges. Clearly you were too valuable to discard so that is something.”

“Do you know how much power and time you have to spend to do a multi-phasic scan. Then you correlate the scan with each other scan of each phase. That implies both you and the object are stationary or moving in a predictable fashion so the computer can make the adjustments.” He looked at the ensign.

“It also illuminates the ship doing the scan like a flashlight in a night sky so there are many minuses… many.”

Kolar

“Yes but using multiple scans as in layers rapidly and asking the advanced computer on the Olinski cannot we overcome this by using predictive scanning technology?” He asked. If he was being honest he was reaching a little now. The Commander had hit him with a good response.

Copecky
Kolar stared at Copecky as he took a long draw on his drink. letting out a sigh he looked that the eager young man in front of him. “Copecky....How many men does it take to pop popcorn?”

“Uhh Sir? Not sure what that is Sir?” He half asked and half stated.

He waited a brief second before answering. “Three. One to hold the pan and two others to show off and shake the stove.” The joke wasn’t all that funny but a decent segway into a new topic.

Copecky smiled nervously.

“I think I get the er joke Sir. Very funny.” He said but looked more confused and scared now than anything else. His bravery now completely leaving him.

“So are engineering problems something you really love to do in your off hours or are you trying to impress me and waiting for your two buddies to come shake the stove.”

Kolar

Lieut Lane (CIO)

“I like Science Sir and of course Engineering is a part of that. I don’t have two friends coming over Sir.” He said with a half smile.

“I err find your report on wormhole mechanics in Starfleet Science the best I have ever seen.” Copecky said. This time it was not trying to ingratiate himself. This time he actually meant it.

Copecky Science

Dallas Ops

“Thanks,” Kolar nodded. While Balfor was not arrogant he was intelligent and self confident about his skills. The report on wormhole mechanics was solid. “It took me weeks to find triangulate the Starboard Photonic Transition Transmitter with the Forward Phase Node to make sure that when you are coasting the wave you don’t run the risk of getting tossed out so far from home even your great great grandkids wouldn’t be around when you got back. Are you interested in testing theories about wormholes or postulating them. I am the XO. Give me a few more of these,” he held up his drink, “and I could be stupid enough to take a shuttle out for a spin and test the theories.” It might have been just fun booze banter but then again maybe it wasn’t.

Copecky suddenly looked like a kid on the old Christmas celebration day.

“I would very much but uh can you actually get authorization to do that?” He said doubtfully. Then again he was not a Commander either so Commanders probably could.

“I mean if transference harmonics don’t get in the way. One frequency change and a wave collapses. That point of extra information is detected at the quantum level and can change the wave to just a lot of independent particles.” Copecky added considering that he still had doubts about wormhole quantum stability.

Copecky

Dallas

“Data suggests when a wormhole collapses whatever inside gets kicked out into real space.” He thought about the Bajorian wormhole which he was most familiar with. “Most of the time.” He still remembered the 2100 Jem Hadar ships that never showed up after leaving the Beta Quadrant and not showing up in the Alpha.

Kolar

“Until it doesn’t.” Copecky said tilting his head. “Sir I want to thank you for giving me a few minutes of your time to talk.”

Copecky was a little cocky and nerdy at the same time but he did consider the Commander one of his idols in SF.

Copecky

“No thanks necessary. Science was my first passion before I turned it in for paperwork and headaches,” Kolar joked taking a sip of his drink.
