Abel looked conflicted for a moment, but then said “Ardana itself is quite beautiful. It is most known for the floating city of Stratos, where I grew up. In centuries past, there was a great social divide between those that lived in the city, and those that lived under it. Those above thought themselves above. Those below were viewed as ‘less’ than. Stratos dwellers called them ‘Troglodytes’ and told horror stories to their children. ‘If you don’t behave, the Troy’s will come from below and eat you!’ kind of propaganda.” It was obvious from his tone and expression he was not a fan of this. “After we joined the Federation, members of Star Fleet discovered this caste system, and the Andarian government was force to let those living below to move up or be censured and removed from the Federation. So they acquiesced. It took a few generations, but now there is a level of equality amongst everyone. Although there are still some adherents to the older way of thinking. But fortunately they are fading.”

The server arrived with their orders and set it down. Abel thanked them. He then looked back at Xandra. “So where have you been that you do want to go back to?” and he began to prepare a bite of gagh.

Abel, CMO

Xandra thought for a long moment, her pasta set before her idly being tapped by her fork as she thought. “I would say Rosseau V was pretty amazing. The harmonics in its nebula actually make sound. Pretty incredible, at least to me. I wouldn’t say Risa,” her lip curled slightly as she shook her head. “That’s more like just going home to a resort.” She smiled and nodded to his gagh. “I did enjoy the Klingon Temple on Boreth. But I honestly can’t think of any place I pine for, honestly. No real memories built anywhere, I guess. I think I’ve spent so long in space, it’s probably just a cockpit away from the ship that I ‘go to’ most often.”

Taking a bite of her pasta, she laughed. “Pretty sad, huh? That the place I want to be most is in a tiny metal box in space more than a hand’s length from safety. Wonder what the Counselor would say to that?”

Abel shrugged while looking at he food. “Probably that you are a product of your environment. And you should consider that your perspective may be a boon to someone in your line of work.” He stabbed a particularly long worm and twirled it onto his fork. He looked at her and shrugged again with a slight smile and said “But I am no Counselor.” and he took a bite.

Abel, CMO

Watching him eat didn’t bother her as she took another stab at her own food. “Which is a good thing. Getting chastised for getting hurt in a holo program is one thing. Getting grilled about why right afterwards, not sure I could handle you doing both. And if you’re CMO, then you’re a damned, fine doctor and should stay there.”

She laughed finishing her mouthful. “I guess being content out in space is a good thing for a pilot. Thank you for not making a big negative deal about it.” He’d get the feeling, from the almost tired tone of her voice, that most folks did just that.

“So on to more cheerful things, shall we? How do you like to spend your spare time? Apparently neither of us travel much. And both our down times are semi plentiful, though short. Sometimes it’s only the mere down time of shifts between getting off and back on duty. I enjoy random holo programs of places we can’t actually go. Nebulas, super novas, most of the beautiful places in space.” She blushed at the admissions then became super intrigued by what was on her plate.

Abel chewed thoughtfully for a moment. He was not prone to lying to people, but he also valued his privacy about his ‘spare time’. So he said “Unfortunately for me,I don’t really have free time even when I have free time. I’m, um, on the board of several different charities-“, which was absolutely true,”- and I usually am assisting them or related organizations when I’m not on duty.” That was also true. So ther than the glaring omission of his ‘other’ work, he technically told the truth… at least as much as easing his conscious required.

Abel, CMO

Xandra had been glancing at her food and missed the subtle changed of features as his words warred with him before he spoke.

At the mention of charities, Xandra smiled and nodded. “That’s a noble thing. Probably better than staring at him programs. Good for you. If you ever need donations of stuff, lemme know. Between being a pilot and a CAG, there are occasional strings I can pull.” She laughed and finished her mouthful.

“But I would think you should sometimes get a moment or three for yourself. Even if just to sit in your quarters and just let your mind wander.” It wasn’t in her nature to press about what kind of charity work he worked with. She knew from the file times she been part of something like that, that most folks preferred anonymity. And being on boards meant he probably preferred background support and anonymity.

Abel smiled and said “On the rare instance of such quiet times, I do enjoy reading. I find philosophies very intriguing so I have a fairly robust collection of such, some even in book form.”

Changing the subject, she glanced at him with curiosity. “Ever been in a aircraft besides ships and shuttles?”

Abel nodded as he took another bite and chewed. “Oh yes. Every year in my home city, there is a celebration of the anniversary of it opening. Zeppelins make up a large part of the celebration; and every year my parents would reserve space in the dining car of one. It was always a lot of fun.” and he took a drink. “What about you? Do you think you could fly a zeppelin?”

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed. “I don’t know. I admit I never considered it. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to know what kind of controls it has.” Nodding out the window, she laughed. “Perhaps next time you go there, you will let me know so I can check it out? Sounds amazing, to be sure.” She had heard of Zeppelins, but had never seen one or been near one in person. It was an intriguing opportunity idea.

As a thought, she countered. “Have you been ‘out there’ in a fighter?” A smile lit her lips as the unspoken invitation sat there behind her eyes.

Abel smiled and shook his head. “No. And I will admit the thought is not a pleasant one. Too small for my tastes.” and he laughed softly. “Although I do like roller coasters, so maybe it would be fun.” and he laughed again. “But I think, for now at least, I will stay within the confines of things like the Olinksi and maybe a shuttle or runabout.” He took a bite and there was chirp on his comm badge. =/\= Commander, you have a subspace call from Tyrin VII. =/\= Abel took a deep breath and then held up a finger to Xandra as he dabbed his mouth with a napkin and swallowed. “Excuse me a moment.” and he stood up and walked away for a moment, said something, and then returned to the table. Smiling, he said “Now. Where were we? Ah yes, zeppelins and star fighters.” and he smiled as he took a drink.

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed that he liked roller coasters but not the idea of a fighter. She had been about to comment when he got the comm. Nodding to let him take it, she nodded to one of the passing waiters to tell their drinks and clear whatever dishes were empty.

As he came back and took his seat with the comment, she laughed, “And roller coasters. If a fighter is too confined, I’ll have to invite you to enjoy my personal holo program sometime. Especially if you love roller coasters.”

Taking a sip of her refilled drink she asked, “Everything all right, I hope. From the comm, I mean. I don’t mean to keep you if you have things you need to do.”

He shook his head and said “No no… one of those boards I was telling you about. I will contact them later. Nothing that can’t wait an hour or two. So tell me about your holo program. What is it based on?”
