Xandra had been glancing at her food and missed the subtle changed of features as his words warred with him before he spoke.

At the mention of charities, Xandra smiled and nodded. “That’s a noble thing. Probably better than staring at him programs. Good for you. If you ever need donations of stuff, lemme know. Between being a pilot and a CAG, there are occasional strings I can pull.” She laughed and finished her mouthful.

“But I would think you should sometimes get a moment or three for yourself. Even if just to sit in your quarters and just let your mind wander.” It wasn’t in her nature to press about what kind of charity work he worked with. She knew from the file times she been part of something like that, that most folks preferred anonymity. And being on boards meant he probably preferred background support and anonymity.

Abel smiled and said “On the rare instance of such quiet times, I do enjoy reading. I find philosophies very intriguing so I have a fairly robust collection of such, some even in book form.”

Changing the subject, she glanced at him with curiosity. “Ever been in a aircraft besides ships and shuttles?”

Abel nodded as he took another bite and chewed. “Oh yes. Every year in my home city, there is a celebration of the anniversary of it opening. Zeppelins make up a large part of the celebration; and every year my parents would reserve space in the dining car of one. It was always a lot of fun.” and he took a drink. “What about you? Do you think you could fly a zeppelin?”

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed. “I don’t know. I admit I never considered it. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to know what kind of controls it has.” Nodding out the window, she laughed. “Perhaps next time you go there, you will let me know so I can check it out? Sounds amazing, to be sure.” She had heard of Zeppelins, but had never seen one or been near one in person. It was an intriguing opportunity idea.

As a thought, she countered. “Have you been ‘out there’ in a fighter?” A smile lit her lips as the unspoken invitation sat there behind her eyes.

Xandra
CAG

Abel smiled and shook his head. “No. And I will admit the thought is not a pleasant one. Too small for my tastes.” and he laughed softly. “Although I do like roller coasters, so maybe it would be fun.” and he laughed again. “But I think, for now at least, I will stay within the confines of things like the Olinksi and maybe a shuttle or runabout.” He took a bite and there was chirp on his comm badge. =/\= Commander, you have a subspace call from Tyrin VII. =/\= Abel took a deep breath and then held up a finger to Xandra as he dabbed his mouth with a napkin and swallowed. “Excuse me a moment.” and he stood up and walked away for a moment, said something, and then returned to the table. Smiling, he said “Now. Where were we? Ah yes, zeppelins and star fighters.” and he smiled as he took a drink.

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed that he liked roller coasters but not the idea of a fighter. She had been about to comment when he got the comm. Nodding to let him take it, she nodded to one of the passing waiters to tell their drinks and clear whatever dishes were empty.

As he came back and took his seat with the comment, she laughed, “And roller coasters. If a fighter is too confined, I’ll have to invite you to enjoy my personal holo program sometime. Especially if you love roller coasters.”

Taking a sip of her refilled drink she asked, “Everything all right, I hope. From the comm, I mean. I don’t mean to keep you if you have things you need to do.”

Xandra
CAG

He shook his head and said “No no… one of those boards I was telling you about. I will contact them later. Nothing that can’t wait an hour or two. So tell me about your holo program. What is it based on?”

Abel, CMO

Xandra smiled. “Well, I have always loved flying in the fighters but one thing I do miss is the view.” She laughed lightly. “Hard to look around in a firefight. And when you are out on patrol, more than half your vision is blocked because of mobility and the airframe itself. So I made a simulation without the barriers. So no canopy, no restricting harness, and a seat that moves to allow for three hundred and sixty visibility. So it’s similar to your roller coaster,” her head nodded to him in acknowledgement, “but it’s still a fighter simulator if I want it to be. Helps in that regard because I can pause at any time and reconcile my HUD with actual positioning of other craft.”

She took a sip of her drink and smiled brighter. “I imagine you haven’t had a roller coaster ride like that before.”

Xandra
CAG

“No I have not.” he said with a laugh. “So other than flying, what else do you enjoy, Commander?”

Abel, CMO

The question actually caught her off guard and it took her a moment. She glanced outside then back at the Doc. A small half shrug preceded her answer as she tried to laugh, but it sounded almost forced.

“You know what? It’s been so long since I’ve done anything else, or had time for anything else, that I honestly don’t know anymore. I’m sure the Counselor would love to drive into that deeper.”

Xandra
CAG

Abel laughed and said “And here I thought I was the one with issues over-extending myself.” and he shook his head. “Well, when you remember, let me know.”

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed. “I thought that was par for the course for Doctors. You always overextend. It seems an occupational hazard for most Department Heads, apparently. Well, I am more than happy to try and intervene, if you wish. I shall see to it you eat, and get at least an occasional partial shift off. Far be it for me to temp death expecting a whole shift from someone who could knock me out with a hypo.” She laughed and smiled.

It felt strange to relax with someone and not have anything to worry about. At least at the moment…

Xandra
CAG

Abel smiled and said “I appreciate the offer. But I wouldn’t expect you to make sure I eat. The time off is a different story.” and he laughed. “But I am always open to a meal with a friend.”

Abel, CMO

Xandra smiled. “Well it’s two fold, honestly. Remembering to comm you to see if you ate will remind me I need to, as well. Who knows, maybe I can find time to steal you away and try my holo program. I never considered it a roller coaster. But I guess, in a way, it is.”

Xandra
CAG

“Look at that. Our very own mutual aid society.” Abel said with a laugh. “Done. You make sure I eat. I make sure you take time for yourself. Between the two of us, maybe one of us will actually have a life outside of work.” Just then his comms chirped again. =/\= Commander, incoming comm from Halasian VI sir. They say it is urgent. =/\= Abel sighed heavily. “Now that is a call I must take. I’m sorry. Do you want to wait? Or should we call it an evening?” he asked.

Abel, CMO

Xandra smiled and nodded her head. “You’ve eaten and I’ve taken a rest. I think we’re good. Please, take your comm. I don’t wish you to rush because I’m waiting.” She rose to depart and nodded once more.

“And don’t forget, Doc.. I’m merely a comm away. I’ve enjoyed this and look forward to next time.” She waited for his reply before heading for the door.

Xandra
CAG

“Likewise.” He rose and began walking. “Have a good evening. I hope next time is not too long in coming.” and he smiled and waved.

Abel, CMO
