Abbie knew the way, deck 7 to deck 12 via one of the port turbo lifts for the quickest route from her new quarters. She’d never actually followed the route before, but knew the fastest route to the security Office, it had been a long and dull trip from San Francisco to her first proper posting on the USS Brian A. Olinski, so she’d had plenty of time to study the specs of her new home.

It certainly wasn’t the posting she was expecting, truthfully she didn’t know what sorting of posting she did expect but she honestly didn’t think she’d graduated high enough to get a decent posting.

The sights and sounds of a star ship were comforting, she had spent half her life on star ships, literally, growing up she lived with her Dad who had been a ship based counsellor for 6 months a year and then the following 6 months with her mother who lived in a traditionalist commune on Earth. Abbie had always preferred the 6 months she spent with her father, star ship life suited her more. Although until she’d actually dressed in her uniform and stepped on to the ship this morning she’d never believed she’d be a security officer. Abbie always knew she wanted to join Star Fleet, but security officer had been the surprise. Of course it had disappointed her father who’d wanted her to follow a more rewarding, read science based, occupation and her mother was horrified that she was in Star Fleet regardless of what branch. But after 4 years at the academy she had learnt she had to be her own person and do her own thing.

She entered the security office, it was quiet but her arrival gained a few glances, she ignored it she’d gone from being the cool upper classman to being the bottom of the food chain. New Ensigns were everyone’s favourite chew toy.

She pressed the chime on the Chief’s office and when the doors opened she stepped in. She straightened to attention, “Ensign Abbie Wainwright reporting for duty, Sir.” She said handing the Lt at the desk the Padd containing her transfer details.

  • Ensign Abbie Wainwright

Hawkins looked up from his desk “relax Ensign before you break something” he joked as he waved the pad to his computer and it transferred her files. “Take a set ensign. You need any water or tea” he asked.

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Abbie was glad to stand easy, they’d really drummed it into her class the ‘correct’ way to report for duty, Abbie suspected previous classes had drawn complaints or the instructors were playing an epic prank on them.

She was more than happy to take a seat, standing in from of any COS felt like you were about to get a bollocking, even when that COS was your boss.

“Thank you sir, a coffee would be better if you have one.” Abbie said, and then mentally began giving herself a kicking, of course he would have one, the ship had replicators.

-Ensign Wainwright

Hawkins grabbed a pot from the sink in his office and made some fresh warm Irish roast coffee. The coffee tasted amazing and it went down smooth. “ Better than that replicated stuff huh I grow the coffee beans myself.” He said putting the pot on his desk between them. “so ensign why security” he asked.

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Abbie was grateful of the coffee and the Lt. was right it was good coffee and she made a mental note of where to lurk when good coffee was called for. “I’ve never been able to grow more than cress.” She mused taking a sip.

Then she got the question she’d been dreading, ‘why security’. Abbie didn’t look like your usual security candidate. She was average, average height, average build (well for academy graduates). She held no martial arts trophies or athletic medals, and didn’t come from a long line of security officers unlike 80% of her class.

“Why security…well as I’ve mentioned sir botany was probably never going to be a career option, and as one of my highschool teachers said my chemistry projects were the leading cause of ship board fires. I’m just not science officer material. Similar issues around engineering.” She explained trying to explain the various disasters in the nicest way possible, that didn’t go into how those disasters came from gone wrong pranks to pushing every boundary possible.

“I entered the academy with the plan of becoming a helms woman or going into astronavigation as they were both things I enjoyed and had a lot of chances to experience growing up.” She paused thinking of the best way to explain the next bit. “But just before the end of my second year when I had to specialise I was told by one of my instructors that I would do well in security with some of my skills so I changed pathways and here I am” Abbie didn’t use the exact words of the wizened old Chief who’d come up through the enlisted ranks and was one of the weapons instructors and disciplinary coordinators at the academy, ‘Wainwright if you used your brains for security instead of attempted criminal activity you’d make one ‘ell of a security officer’. This was after yet another failed attempt to catch her in the act for some youthful expression of stupidity.

-Ensign Wainwright

James listened to what she had to say “so you are saying there was nothing left for you to do” he stated to look at her “the security career also carry’s into ships tactical systems. Is that a part of something you will like to try” he asked

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Abbie leaned back in her chair, “I wouldn’t say that Sir, it was just deemed that I was a better fit for a security pathway as opposed to the helm officer or astro nav specilisation.” Abbie hadn’t hated the secuity training, it kept her busy, she was good at the physical side and handing with most phase weapons. Plus she was pretty comfortable around forensic investiagtions and the more mundane aspects of the role were just a nice bonus.

Abbie smiled tactical and ship to ship combat was one of the more inticing parts of the job, “Sir, if you check my transcripts you’ll see I scored well in those classes, it’s an area I think I’d like to eventually specilise in.”

-Ensign Wainwright

Hawkins looked at her file “yes I can see that you scored in the mid 90’s. Tell me did you ever hear stories bout the Hawk of the academy who scored 100% on all technical training tests” he said a he looked at here other classes the showed low 80’s barely passing.

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Abbie thought quietly about her answer, now she had two choices. Of course she’d heard about someone aceing the test, there were always those stories the real high flyers the scores to beat. Abbie hadn’t been one of those. She had done enough to pass and used her energies else where. Sports had taken a higher place than academics. But right now she was smart enough to work out Hawk of the Academy probably meant Lt. Hawkins. And this gave her two options she could go with option A, the brown nose approach and gush how wonderful it was to meet the highest scorer or their was plan B, not suck up to the chief. Abbie always went with plan B.

“I’d heard bits but truthfully I never paid much attention.” She said calmly.

-Ensign Wainwright

James smiled “good answer. Sooo I am going to put you on the bridge to work at the tactical station when I am not there. how does that sound to you? And of course I will be giving you a little extra tactical training.” He said waiting for her answer so he can get the schedule processed. “You will spend 3 days working in a training simulator then you will spend 3 day as my shadow on the bridge”

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Abbie’s inital response was a raised eyebrow, her brother called it her thinking eyebrow, the eyebrow that said ‘am I right in thining you said what you just said’. She hadn’t expected much brifgr time outside of the graveyard shift when everyone else had called in sick, she’d expected details that largely consisted of patroling or standing watch on the most unpopulated areas of the ship. At least until she wasn’t the newbie anymore. But Abbie was no idiot and knew not to look a gift horse in the mouth. “Er … That sounds actually pretty decent Sir.” she finially decided. “Happy to do extra tactical training, Thank you Sir”

-Ensign Wainewright

James looked at her “I like every member of my team to have additional skills like field medic, demolition, tactical small arms tactics even advanced team tactics. And of course, there are sometimes still have to do graveyard shifts. Everyone plays there part here. Now, do you have any questions?

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Abbie tried to hide a grin at the thought of demolitions, she’d had fair to entertaining results with demolitions at the academy usually in the form of a prank war with some of the engineering cadets. “That makes sense, I tried to multiskill as much as I could, well as much as we were allowed to Sir.”

Then the Lt asked her if she had questions, she’d never really thought about that, there were plenty of dumb questions she could ask but she was going to try hard to avoid that. “I noticed that according to the ships manafest we carry a compliment of marines, how does that impact on us as security?”

-Ensign Wainwright
