Repairs from recent battle were almost complete on the USS Brian A Olinski. The ship sat in drydock as repairs were conducted, and the crew roamed the starbase. From the far end of the observation deck overlooking the ship, a voice shouted “Admiral on deck!” and suddenly everyone stood to attention. A Bajoran man, who looked a bit young for an Admiral, walked across the deck. “As you were.” Everyone relaxed. “I am looking for Captain Parker, if anyone has seen him.”

-GM

He stood along with the rest of the room as the thought they seem to get younger and younger or I am getting older and older, ran through his mind.

Balfor sat back down at a corner table sipping a drink enjoying the moment of down time which was actually a myth when you were an XO. He might look like he was lazing the day away but in the hand not holding the drink was a PaDD filled with requisition orders and a multitide of questions that seemed to be coming from every department as the repairs were underway. He took a sip of his drink and waited to see if the Captain was around or if he would have to do the intial greeting of the young pup Admiral.

Balfor XO

The Captain was not a Lounge guy though he did make occasional drops in. When he was on the SB he spent a lot of time in his quarters or working out, reading, catching up on the multitude of messages and work related things. However on this occasion he had wandered in for a few minutes to look out on his ship.

“Sir. The Captain is by the observation window.” A very young Lt. said to the Admiral.

“Thank you Lieutenant.” The Admiral nodded and proceeded to the window.

The Captain had felt the change in the room but had not turned around. The Lounge was an At Ease, As You Were area. It was not required to come to attention no matter whom walked in. Out of the corner of his eye he saw his XO had followed the same course of action at his table and had ignored the younger crowd who had snapped to attention. Sid smiled to himself. Two salty dogs. He then waited for the Admiral to come to him.

Parker CO

“Captain Parker.” A voice said from next to Sidney. “My name is Admiral Brax. Your ship looks much better than it did when it arrived. Conflict with the Xindi, yes?”

-GM

The admiral looked back to Kolar and waved him over to join the conversation.

-GM
No thanks. I’m good, Kolar responded. Well responded in his mind. One did not exactly refuse an invitation from a higher ranking officer unless one chose to man an outpost in the middle of the armpit of space.

Picking up his drink, Kolar downed the last of it before standing up and making his way over to the only two men in the room that outranked him.

“Admiral. I don’t believe we had had the pleasure.” He said with respect.

“I don’t think we have.” Admiral Brax responded with a slight smile.

There was no salute or anything like that as they both knew they were in a comfortable setting and it was most likely not on accident the Admiral chose this setting to seek him out.

Parker CO

“Captain, Admiral, Commander Balfor Kolar, Sir.” he greeted both men before adding, “So what do we owe the pleasure of this visit.” Kolar had no desire for banter. One did not send the ‘big boys’ down unless it was bad news or worse news.

Kolar XO

“Very soon, the Olinski will be headed off on another mission. A small freighter carrying important cargo has gone missing.” Admiral Brax handed Captain Parker a PaDD. The PaDDhad location and cargo details for the missing SS Axis “Since this became public knowledge recently, we’re sending a top of the line ship to locate it. Should be as near a shakedown cruise as you’ve been on in recent years.”

-GM

“I’m assuming the cargo has to be very valuable for the Olinski to be called in for a small freighter.” He said in the way of a statement and a question.

Parker CO

Admiral Brax nodded. “Beyond a reasonable payload of dilithium, the ship was also carrying some experimental weapons. We made the mistake of trying to go outside traditional channels to transport these things. They were due to be delivered to Earth Spacedock, received as starship fuel and transferred to weapons testing. But with the ship missing, we don’t know if the weapons remain secure. That’s where you come in.”

-GM

“Question,” Balfor stated with a neutral expression. “If the shuttle we are looking for was carrying cargo important enough for you to send the Olinski to come looking for it, why was the cargo in such a minimally defensive ship to begin with?” Balfor assumed it was just another care of someone high in the food chain not knowing thier arse from their elbow when they planned the freighers mission.

Balfor XO

The exact thing the Captain was thinking.

Admiral Brax eyed Kolar up and down, expressing that he knew Kolar was suggesting incompetence and he might wish to reevaluate that tone. “The SS Axis has been under routine contract to transport dilithium supplies. Sending something else which Command preferred go unobserved served to keep it low profile. Their departure port is under investigation while we send the Olinski to find it. We will uncover what happened and why when this ship has travelled this route dozens of times before.”

-GM

“Well regardless the situation here we are. Ok Admiral we will be on our way as soon as all pertinent information is sent to me to include what “weapons” we are talking about.” The Captain said knowing the die was cast. It was going to be their mission they wanted it or not.

Parker CO

Balfor did not back down just continuing to look at the Admiral with the same innocent but curious face he always displayed. If anything he took on a more pleasant tone.

“So just circling back so that I understand it correctly because I am not the chain of command for this decision,” Balfor made a swirling motion with his hand, “Someone put secret weapons on the SS Axis because they thought no one would ever suspect that an unarmed freighter on a highly predictable flight path would have such an interesting payload and it allowed the contents of the interesting payload to bypass normal security checks and now has been lost. Is there any chance we might know more about these experimental weapons so that we don’t miss what we are looking for hen we find or encounter them? “

Balfor XO

Admiral Brax nodded. “They’re new types of phaser, in both pistol and rifle form. They’re very power efficient and can fire almost twice as many shots without requiring power. Or the output can be cranked so high they vaporize almost anything they hit. They look like old fashioned phase pistols from the days of Jonathan Archer.”

-GM

“Great so we won’t even see it coming when they fire on us,” Balfor said dryly. “Permission to be excused and recall the crew,” he asked the Admiral.

Balfor XO

“Mind your tone, Commander.” There was a pause as Brax made his immediate authority evident. “Dismissed.”

-GM

Sid knew Balfor overstepped himself a bit but let it pass. He was going to give the man he knew and trusted a lot more rope than he was going to an Admiral. Also technically the Admiral could not dismiss him to recall the crew, only the Captain could. The Admiral could dismiss him to “get out of my face” for sure but not for a command order on the Olinski.

Sid nodded to Balfor to get going and to acknowledge the request but not insult the Admiral. A Captain had to play many roles.

“Admiral. Are the development of that powerful of a had weapon allowed within our own guidelines and that of the treaties we have with all the other Federation Planets and other powers in the Galaxy?”

Parker CO

“They push the limits of treaties which the Federation has signed.” Admiral Brax responded. “However you’ll find them to be just within the law.”

-GM

” I see Admiral. Just like being a little pregnant.” The Captain said off handily. “If that is it Admiral I will take my leave and prepare the crew.”

The Captain made his way to the ship. He wondered if this Admiral had ever served on a front line ship. In the past it was always so. Now not so much.

Parker CO
