James was checking the ships records when he found something interesting. The crew have not been re-qualified for phasers for some time. He left his office and down to the halo deck and checked the programs. He input the command to run the program. As the doors opened he was in a sunny field, with a warm breeze blowing through his hair. A little ways away from the entrance was a table with a few phasers on it he went over to them and looked them over. He then straighten out his uniform and activate his com Badge

=A= attention crew this is Lt. James Hawkins the COS of this vessel. I have reviewed some logs in security and I found that a lot of us have not been recertified so when you have the time, please come down to HaloDeck 2 and I can get you re-certified. Thank you and have a good day. =A=

Now, all with James has to do is play the waiting game. He walked over to the table, picked up a phaser rifle and started to get some target practice.

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Steve heard this and wondered why the CoS didn’t just send out an email or something but it seemed important for him to do that. Afterall, if no one can shoot, then how can they save the ship from a boarding party or themselves on an away mission. pressing his com. =/\= Chief Engineer to Chief of Security. Understood. I will gather my engineers to report and have the ones on duty report to you after their shift. You will have to have multiple times and days just for my department to get through sir.=/\=

About 42 minutes pasted and Steve rolls up with 34 NE’s ready to qualify. “Chief Johnson and his off duty engineers reporting as ordered. Where do you want us?”

Lt. Steve Johnson, CE

“By the table with the hand helds and the phaser rifles” he said turning to them. He held up a type 2 phaser “Ok everyone this is a type 2 phaser. It has two settings. Lt Jonson what are the two settings” he asked to see if they we’re paying attention.

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

Ensign Wainwright had been given her duty roster the day before and it looked like she’d be doing a lot of shaddowing the CoS, however she didn’t think that would entail helping with phaser recert, she figured it might be one or two science officers or medics she certainly wans’t expecting this many engineers. It was going to be an interesting morning.

-Ensign Wainwright

OOC: Wainwright, can you please still teach us this class because the CoS has been removed.

Steve smiles at her. “Madam. Will you be our instructor today?”

Lt. Steve Johnson, CE

“Madam?” She almost laughed “Nah it’s just Ensign.” She corrected she could never see herself as a madam a Mrs, even having a rank was a stretch to her.

“Then I will call you that.”

She looked around releasing she was now the only security personnel here. This was suddenly less of a skive than she thought “Yes Sir I guess I am.” She said picking up the phaser.

“Okay listen up, I don’t want any accidental burns, loss of limbs or anything I have to later explain at any disciplinary hearing.” She began, she held up the phaser “You’re a smart bunch of engineers so I hope I don’t need to explain again that this end” she said pointing at the muzzle of the phaser “is the dangerous end, we do not point this at ourselves, friends or senior officers. This end is strictly for pointing at the bad guys.” She paused.

They all picked up the phasers and did not point them at anyone other than downrange and noticed the end that she spoke of.

“This nicely contoured end, see how well it fits in the hand, this is where we hold the phaser.” She put the phaser down “Any questions so far, anything new and or unusual from anything you’ve done before?”

-Ensign Wainwright

Still holding the phasers they all examined the handle portion and sat the phasers back down on the stands. Looking around and seeing that his crew was good to go Steve spoke up. “No ma’a…Ensign. We are good to go and that part. What’s next?” Steve asked

Lt. Steve Johnson CE

Abbie knew this was probably basic knowledge for them all, and they were smart, but common sense was often lacking in the smart so them not pointing phasers at anything other than down the range was a good start.

“Looking good, I think we can tick off ‘safely use a phaser’.” She said. “Right boring stuff over, time for the good bit.”

In the academy there had been endless discussions on what was an appropriate target to shoot at, it was always going to be an inflammatory subject. Which races it was okay to have as target, was it culturally appropriate, would someone have their feelings hurt. Abbie had decided it was far more ethical to put something truly terrifying as a target to save offending anyone.

“Computer, run Wainwright target practice one” she said as in each of the ranger lanes appeared cute fluffy unicorns. Each slightly different, but all with big eyes, rainbow manes, and pink fur. “The range is now hot. Two inch grouping, in your own time. Fire” she called out to the engineers.

-Ensign Wainwright

The targets appeared and a few of them laughed, even Steve. Steve then put the phaser down. “As a Brony, I cannot ethically fire at a My Little Pony target. But before that Ensign, do you mind teaching “How” to shoot before we shoot? Meaning, I haven’t touched a phaser in three years and I do not know which setting you want this on? I do not want to be a pain, but some of us have never fired since the Academy .”

Lt. Steve Johnson, CE

Abbie knew the target might get a few laughs it was partially ment to and partially ment to scare. But the Lt confused her. ” A who and a what Sir? This is just the scariest thing I could think of to use as a target.” Abbie looked down the range and shuddered “so much pink.”

I am a Brony. A grown man that loves the My Little Pony cartoons. A female adult fan is called a Pegisister. ” He smiled proudly at that.

Abbie tried to hide the look of total confusion, a cartoon, a cartoon she’d never heard of but clear something the chief was into, maybe it was an engineering thing, maybe it would be worth using the LCARS to find out what it was for futre reference. “Ahh…Err… Yes…Sir” was all Abbie could really say on the matter.

It had slipped Abbie’s mind that she might have to actually show them how to shoot. “Oh right of course.” She said grabbing a phaser. ” Okay chaps and chapesses, there are 16 settings on a type 2 phaser. If we are cranking it up past 11 things have gone really wrong and we can pretty much melt through bulkheads. Of which I know you’ll probably not want us security types doing. The reason we like the phaser is we can stun the bad guys instead of just killing them. And stunning means less paper work, which is exactly why security use the stun setting, we can hardly spell out names let alone do reels of paperwork.” She grinned she knew how people saw security officers, meatheads who weren’t smart enough for any other branch. “So unless ordered keep it on a setting between 3 and 5. Setting 2 is good for marshmallows and small animals.”

They all paid attention to her every word and move.

She moved over to the range, “So we know which way to point it, where to hold it and the setting today we’ll keep it at 3, now we just need to fire it. When you fire you aim first, I seriously can’t stress this enough, aim first, always aim first, then when you have the right target, take a breath, hold it and fire.” Abbie let the instructions sink in before demonstrating it herself. She took her usual firing stance and then sent five quick shots down the range and into the face of a unicorn forming a neat little grouping of scorch marks.

She looked smug at her handy work. Abbie turned and held the phaser out to the Engineering chief “All yours sir.”

-Ensign Wainwright

“Nice!” Steve picked up the phaser and aimed it at the target and let a few shots fly. Barely hitting it once. “Dang!” HE said while putting the phaser back down. Some others had the same results as him while some of the newer members where doing just fine.

Lt. Steve Johnson, CE

Abbie cast a critcal eye down the range. “If you don’t mind some feedback Sir,” she started, “You’re not aiming, taking an extra 30 seconds to aim will save you later on, slow down what you’re doing, take that moment and it’ll save your life some day, letting shots fly might look cool, but rarely works.” she watched as one engineer managed to almost get a grouping. “Have another go,” she paused “All of you, no one leaves till you hit the minimum requirement.” Watching one engineering ensign completly miss a target and scorch a wall at an almost impossible angle, Abbie wished she’d bought a book with her.
