Ael was getting his gear together at his new locker in the Red Squad locker room. Starbuck came up next to him. “Chief. What’d you hear?”
“Same as you. Beloti system. Subspace mine field. Sweep a clear path for the mother bird to come through. Nothing big.”
“Apex. Come on, that’s gold, but there has to be more.” Ael sighed. “That’s all we have. If the assignment changes in air, that’s a different story.” As Red Squad assembled and got ready to fly, the room was slightly abuzz.

-Lt(j.g.) Ael Khev, Apex (Red Squad Leader)

Ric stepped into the hanger bay, having a discussion with one of the flight engineers. After nodding an acknowledgement, the CAG approached the gathered Red and Green Squad pilots.

“Here’s the 4-1-1, ladies and gentleman. The Cardassians have provided us with intel on a safe path through the minefield. Honestly, I still don’t trust the Cardassians. The path has been loaded into your onboard computers. We’ve got extra work, though. They’ve used subspace Houdinis in this area and I wouldn’t be surprised if they conveniently forgot to mention where some of those are. The sensors in your birds have been modified to detect those. You paint one, make sure everybody is clear, then light it up. Any questions?”

Ricochet (CAG)

Ensign Tessa Lance, callsign “Goldeneye” raised her hand. “Yes sir. Do we know how old these mines are? Are they from the Dominion War or the Cardassian Conflict that happened over a decade earlier?”

NE Tessa May Lance, callsign “Goldeneye” because R Smith needs to post every three days.

Ael chimed in. “Gravitic subspace mines were primarily used during the Cardassian war. They’re a little out of date for the Dominion.” How Ael knew what weapons were used at the time was unknown to the group. A covert intelligence operation looking into the Cardassians a couple decades ago.

A disembodied voice interrupted the proceedings. =^=Harn to Commander O’Shea, you and your fighters now have clearance to launch.=^=

Jason Harn, XO

=^=Copy that, Harn.=^= Ric began moving in the direction of his bird. “That’s our green light, people. Mount up. Keep an eye on your sensors. I don’t want to be bringing any body back in pieces,” the CAG replied.

Ael grabbed his flight suit helmet and stood up. “See you out there.” He said to Ric.

He gave Ael a thumbs-up as he climbed into the cockpit of his own fighter.

Ricochet (CAG)

Xandra listened silently to the briefing and acknowledged it with everyone else. She smiled as intelligent questions and answers went back and forth. This is is a good flight crew, she thought to herself.

As she and Ric headed for their birds, she gave him a slight nod the climbed into her fighter. They’d agreed long ago to leave the relationship in the halls and not bring it into the hangar. If you got in your cockpit thinking about your lover and not your wing man, people got hurt. They were professional in flight and kept it that way.

Ael walked backwards, guiding Red Squad to their fighters. “Subspace mines are tricky. Keep your engines hot, torpedoes loaded. If you have time to see it and get a good phaser lock, it’s too late. So, pull the mine, send in a torpedo, and get the hell out. Clear?” A collection of ‘yes sirs’ came back. “Alright. Get set in your birds, and let’s get out there.”

-Lt Ael Khev, Apex (Red Squad Leader)

As Green and Red Squad left the Hangar bay, Ric warned his pilots one final time. =^=Ladies and gentlemen, remember to keep your eyes on the sensors. That’s the only way you’ll spot the Houdinis. Set your radios to scan all subspace frequencies. If someone is calling for help, we’ll pick up an SOS, distress beacon, or some kind of communication from the Sierra.=^=

Ricochet (CAG)

Once out of the Oly, Xandra throttled back and took off above the rest of the wings. Making sure NE Bronson (Shadow) was on her six, she tapped her command. =^= Angel up, guys. I’ll keep a sweep ahead of you and try and talk you thru tough patches. No heroes today, please.=^=

Her job was to fly above the field the best she could and make sure the maps of the boobietraps was accurate. She was too far away to tag most of the mines, but she’d have them on sensors and ‘hopefully’ catch any that were accidentally missed in the Intel reports.

Xandra
“Little Sehlat”
Green Leader

=/\=Red Squad, form up. We’re headed in. Keep it tight, we just want to destroy the mines, not pull them.=/\= Ael watched his scope. Xandra was right. Heroics did not mix well with minefields. As the entered the minefied, the mild telepathy that came with being Romulan made the tension palpable. The wing glided along and searched for the first bogey.

-Lt Ael Khev, Apex (Red Squad Leader)
