After stowing his gear in his berth, Schweitzer checked his uniform in the mirror and stepped out into the passageway. Schweitzer nervously approached the XO’s office to check in for his first assignment as a department head on a ship of the line. He wondered what adventures lay in store. He knocked on the door.

“Come in,” a masculine voice called.

As the door opened, Schweitzer gathered his courage and said, “Lt. Schweitzer reporting as ordered, Sir.”

“Lieutenant,” the first officer smiled as stood up to reach across his desk and extend his hand. Commander Jason Harn had the distinction of being one of few people aboard that was as tall as Lieutenant Albert Schweitzer. Jason Harn was broad shouldered, and the firm handshake he gave the new doctor indicated that any extra pounds he had over Al Schweitzer was likely to be muscle, although a physical examination or a perusal of his medical records would be necessary to prove it. Commander Harn was a fit and hearty man in his mid-fifties. Thanks to the life extending medical advances of the modern age Jason Harn would appear decades younger to anyone born before the founding the United Federation of Planets, but to Doctor Schweitzer’s eyes the commander’s true age was visible. “Welcome aboard. Where’d yuh serve?” he asked in a friendly and conversational manner.

Jason Harn, XO

Schweitzer took in the commanding bearing of the XO and smiled. “First posting, Sir. I’m straight out of the Academy. I’m excited for the opportunity to serve on a ship of the line and lead a department.”

“Graduated with honors I see,” Jason smiled wistfully as his thoughts briefly went into the distant past. “Congratulations Doc. We’re lucky to have you. Um, sit down and stay a while won’t you?” he asked uncomfortably as he ran his hand through his light brown hair. “I um, got something to share, and we’re probably going to be playing questions and answers for a bit. Want anything from the replicator?”
