SNIP

It wasn’t unusual for most of the pilots to be up all hours of the night. Most were on such strange rotation that there were usually nearly half a dozen around at any given time. This time, Xandra was one of those half dozen. Her head popped out of the cockpit as Ael and the Vulcan were speaking. “APEX!” She raised her voice with a half laugh. “You gonna tell me if the circuit tripped this time, or not?” Seeing he was speaking to someone else, she brushed an errant strand of dark hair behind her ear and smiled. She was standing enough to show she was well built and lean all at once. Her jumper was off on top and ties around her waist. Her white tshirt hugging her form as she nodded respectfully. “My apologies. I didn’t realize you were speaking to someone. Hi,” she said, suddenly a little more than embarrassed. “I’m Xandra. Sorry to interrupt.”

“Not interrupting much. Ensign Serok was just reminding me that I’m Romulan.” Ael replied with a half smile.

-Lt Ael Khev, Apex

Xandra feigned surprise. “Romulan? Are you really? Huh.” She laughed and winked at Serok. “And here with his manners is thought him Klingon this whole time.”

(Pasting to fix split)

Serok’s brow raised when Ael replied. Why would I remind him of that which he knows. That he is Romulan. He thought. Then he remembered an emotional response given called sarcasm he believed it was called. Being around only Vulcans for 70 years the nuances of communicating with other species he knew would be an adjustment.

As he turned to acknowledge the woman speaking his brow rose again. The sight of a woman wearing a tight fitting shirt and not completely in uniform was unexpected. Aside from uniforms and Vulcan robes this was the most he had seen of a woman’s body for a quite some time. He noticed the pigmentation turn red on her face. Blushing he thought it was referred to. “As the Lieutenant casually mentioned, I am Ensign Serok. Greetings Xandra. I was merely curious about the Lieutenants presence aboard this ship. I have been away for quite sometime and perhaps that has left me…out of touch I believe is the saying.” He explained almost awkwardly for a Vulcan.

Ensign Serok (Science)

“Well,” she laughed and winked at Ael. “I think we will get along just fine. I wonder about his presence on board all the time.”

“Indeed.” He replied as he glanced at Ael. He perceived this as “sarcasm” to the Romulan Lieutenant.

Hopping out of the cockpit, she slid easily to the deck and smiled coming to the two of them. “To be honest, he’s the other Wing Leader here. And a damned fine pilot. Though please don’t tell him I said so,” she made the comment in a whisper though it was loud enough for Apex to hear, “There won’t be any living with him if he knew.”

Serok watched as the woman approached with his hands behind his back. Her smile was pleasant he thought to himself. He leaned in closer as she began to whisper however he could tell his Romulan cousin could easily hear her comment. “I see.” He matched her whisper. “I shall not relay your observation of his piloting skills.” As he stood back upright, it was clear that they had a relationship. Wether it was professional or otherwise remained to be seen. Obviously he was a member of this crew and that was good enough for him. For now.

She brushed her hands on the turned down jumper legs. “So what brings you to the hanger, Serok? I’m sure it’s not to see the makeup of the crew is evenly distributed amongst those represented by the Federation.” She was smiling and teasing but completely at ease in her dress and manner as the pilot leaned back on the bird and glanced up at Ael beside her.

His initial assessment of Xandra was that she enjoyed “sarcasm”. He was a little pleased that he was able to pick up on it so quickly. “This is my first assignment after a 70 year absence from Starfleet. The hanger is of interest as starships only housed shuttle crafts last I served.

He then turned to Ael. “My apologies, Lieutenant You are clearly a part of this crew. Perhaps you would be willing to discuss your path that lead you to being a pilot for Starfleet at some point?” From what Serok could ascertain from reports the Romulan and Federation relations are tenuous at best.

Xandra laughed and reached under the craft into the tool box to put away a tool she had drawn from her back pocket and grab a smaller one. “Well, now you’ve gone and done it. He’s legit now.” She laughed and nodded towards Ael. Glancing back at Serok, she smiled and nodded, this time with a bit more respect. “Well, welcome back. We have several different craft on the ship now. I am happy to show you around, some time, if you want. You said seventy years? Seems a long time to be gone. Why did you leave and what brought you back? If I’m not poking where I’m not wanted.” She fiddled with the small screwdriver like tool between her fingers like a nervous twitch.

Serok turned his attention back to the young woman as she commented to Ael. He could see they had a relationship, to what extent was unknown. He nodded as she welcomed him back. “Indeed.” He said as he looked around the hanger bay at the other ships. “I would be agreeable of a tour to familiarize myself with this vessel. As for my long absence, it was a personal matter. Perhaps it would be better explained in a more informal setting.” He did not mind discussing his absence but it was a long story as well as getting to know more of the crew would be beneficial as well.

Ensign Serok (Science)

“Great,” she said with a smile and started to climb back up into the cockpit of the fighter. “If you want, you are welcome to hang around. Apex and I are just doing some parameter checks on the HUD system. Pleasure meeting you. And I look forward to seeing you around.” She smiled and nodded respectfully before disappearing back into the cockpit humming to herself.
