After stowing his gear in his berth, Schweitzer checked his uniform in the mirror and stepped out into the passageway. Schweitzer nervously approached the XO’s office to check in for his first assignment as a department head on a ship of the line. He wondered what adventures lay in store. He knocked on the door.

“Come in,” a masculine voice called.

As the door opened, Schweitzer gathered his courage and said, “Lt. Schweitzer reporting as ordered, Sir.”

“Lieutenant,” the first officer smiled as stood up to reach across his desk and extend his hand. Commander Jason Harn had the distinction of being one of few people aboard that was as tall as Lieutenant Albert Schweitzer. Jason Harn was broad shouldered, and the firm handshake he gave the new doctor indicated that any extra pounds he had over Al Schweitzer was likely to be muscle, although a physical examination or a perusal of his medical records would be necessary to prove it. Commander Harn was a fit and hearty man in his mid-fifties. Thanks to the life extending medical advances of the modern age Jason Harn would appear decades younger to anyone born before the founding the United Federation of Planets, but to Doctor Schweitzer’s eyes the commander’s true age was visible. “Welcome aboard. Where’d yuh serve?” he asked in a friendly and conversational manner.

Jason Harn, XO

Schweitzer took in the commanding bearing of the XO and smiled. “First posting, Sir. I’m straight out of the Academy. I’m excited for the opportunity to serve on a ship of the line and lead a department.”

Lt. (j.g.) Schweitzer, Medical

“Graduated with honors I see,” Jason smiled wistfully as his thoughts briefly went into the distant past. “Congratulations Doc. We’re lucky to have you. Um, sit down and stay a while won’t you?” he asked uncomfortably as he ran his hand through his light brown hair. “I um, got something to share, and we’re probably going to be playing questions and answers for a bit. Want anything from the replicator?”

Schweitzer replied, “Just a black coffee would be great, Sir. What did you need to share?”

Lt. (j.g) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“Ah, well…” Jason went to the replicator installed in the back left corner of the room in order to stall. “Hot coffee, black,” he commanded. A cup and saucer appeared in the replicator tray in a shower of sparks. Jason picked up the cup by the saucer and walked back to his desk to lean across and set it on Albert’s side. The light steam rising from the cup did not obscure sight of the fresh black coffee in the slightest. “I’m going to reveal something deeply personal, is it all right if I ask you a personal question first?” he asked the new doctor as he lowered his frame into his chair. “‘None of your business’ is a perfectly acceptable answer,” he smiled reassuringly at the younger man.

Jason Harn, aCO stalling and apparently uncomfortable around medical doctors

Schweitzer tried to keep the puzzled look off of his face.
“Sure. What did you want to know?”

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“Your glasses, that is, your spectacles,” Jason clarified, not knowing the 24th century term for it. “It’s not something you see in this century, and not something I’d expect to see on the face of someone who just learned the most advanced medical procedures that Starfleet Medical can offer. Is there a story behind them?” he smiled sheepishly.

Jason Harn, aCO

Schweitzer nodded slightly and replied, “Not really. I just don’t believe in unnecessary surgery. Correcting my vision would require a procedure and I’ve just never seen the need for it.” He looked at the Commander with an even but friendly expression.

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“Darn, I was hoping that was a personal question,” Jason grinned sheepishly. “It’s just that I’ve got a personal secret myself. It’s not classified but its not something I want spread around. Command staff, department heads and medical personnel can technically look it up any time they want, but its not something I want to be replicator gossip in sick bay. Don’t worry, you’ll know what it is when you see it. In the meantime, enough about me, tell me about YOU. Who is Albert Schweitzer and what does he stand for? What skills does he bring to mix? What experience? And what does he like to do on his time off, I’ve been looking for a fellow rock climber for my holodeck hours, but hey, I’ll try something new,” he shrugged as he did his best to keep the meeting informal.

Jason Harn had developed an informal, almost self deprecating command style in order to mitigate the intimidation factor that a man of his size and strength could project on his subordinates. This was completely unnecessary with the towering young doctor seated across the desk, but old habits died hard, and in any case the difference in rank and age could be just has intimidating as a difference in size. To his credit Albert Schweitzer didn’t seem discomforted by the commander’s unusual manner nor did he seem distracted or irritated by Jason beating around the bush about the unclassified secret that he wished to keep from the crew that Doctor Schweitzer couldn’t fail to note. Apparently the young man had put in more intern hours than he needed to and had already developed a bedside manner in order to put his patients at ease. Perhaps Al Schweitzer was also aware that his height could seem intimidating when combined with the mild phobia so many people had with medical professionals. More power to him. It looked like Al Schweitzer was going to be a good fit for this ship.

Jason Harn, aCO, making a big deal out of nothing when alone with a medical doctor like so many do

OOC: (I’m sorry. I didn’t see any response before I posted earlier.)

Schweitzer swallowed hard.

“I just want to do a good job and help where I can. My namesake went to Africa to practice medicine and I am going to deep space which is the frontier of my time. My speciality is infectious disease so I want to learn about disease process in alien species. As for my off hours, I read a lot and enjoy gourmet food.”
