Schweitzer went through his first day routine and noted the last item on the list, the check-in with the counselor. Schweitzer had always had a positive and professional relationship with counselors at the Academy, so he was less concerned with this task than with checking in with the Commander.

He stepped to the door and knocked. “Lt. Schweitzer reporting for his counseling check-in, Sir.”

“You realize how hard it is to practice medicine after not doing so for five years?” Lieutenant Michaels asked as he stepped out from his closet. The Counselor waved his had to put a pause to his question and motioned for the junior Lieutenant to take a seat in front of his desk. “Lieutenant Schweitzer I presume?” Trevor asked as he sat in the chair behind his desk.

“Tell me, how was your time on the Challenger?” Michaels asked.

Schweitzer smiled as he had anticipated the question. “Never reported in, Sir. I was offered this position as I was on my way there from the Academy and I took it because it was an opportunity to lead a department.”

“In this office I’m not a sir, so you can call me Trevor, Counselor, or Michaels.” The Lieutenant said as he opened the new CMO’s file. “Though everywhere else it’s Lieutenant or sir.” Trevor laughed.

“So a Department Head right out of the Academy, eh?” Michaels asked rhetorically. “That must make you nervous. Usually it takes 3 to 4 years for anyone to become head of a department on a ship this size.”

CNS

Schweitzer swallowed and tried not to show any nervousness. “Yes. I know I’m somewhat ahead of the curve. That’s why I jumped at this assignment. I think I am ready for the challenge, Counselor.”

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“You’ve been told about our track record with Chief Medical Officers, yes?” The Counselor asked, trying to gauge the man’s stress factor. “Since my time here we’ve gone through about 4-5, not including myself or Doolittle as acting CMOs.”

CNS

Schweitzer swallowed and replied, “Really? Why so much turnover?”

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“I suggest you read up on the ship’s mission reports, Doc.” Trevor said with a grin. Michaels pushed back his chair some and placed the PaDD into his desk. After rolling his chair back into position, he continued speaking. “You’ll find that the shrinks out in space are a lot different from the those on academy cruises, Al.” The Counselor stated.

“I don’t have a list of questions that I need to check off, and I certainly will not invade your privacy with questions about your family or deep dark fears.” The Lieutenant added, as he folded his hands together on the desk in front of him. “I’ve learned a lot over the years to tell sane from loco by having a simple conversation with someone.”

CNS

Schweitzer kept a flat tone. “Thank you, Counselor. By the way, it’s Albert, never Al.”

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

Trevor made a note in the Doctor’s file about his preferred name and moved on. “So how was the academy, you must have done fantastic if you’re a junior Lieutenant green out?” Michaels asked.

CNS

Schweitzer shrugged. “I learned a great deal about medical practice in a forward position. Most of my prior experience was in laboratory medicine. I just hope I can help.” Schweitzer tried to maintain a friendly bearing while at the same time wondering where these questions were leading.

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“I’m sure you’ll be of help, Al-bert.” Trevor stated. The Counselor wasn’t finding any red flags, though it was possible that the doctor would find that life on a Starship was a lot more stressful than in a laboratory setting.

“Have you met Doctor Doolittle yet?” Trevor asked.

Michaels

Schweitzer shook his head. “No, Sir. Haven’t had the privilege. Anything I should know?”

Lt. (j.g.) Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

“Nothing too important.” The Counselor replied shaking his head. “He has a medical background, but like myself, has switched over to psychiatrics.” Trevor stated. “He’s the guy that temporarily took over after our most recent Doctor had to abruptly leave the Olinski.”
