Kalani stood outside the CSO’s office and let out a deep breath she had been holding. The Captain had agreed to let her have her vivarium as long as she could get the big boss man of the science department to sign off. Already having the Captain’s approval and the engineering chief promise to help her build it solved two of the three problems in actually seeing it up and running. She hoped that her new boss would be just as easy to convince that she really needed this and it was more than a hobby. Reaching out and activating the door chime, Kalani waited until she was granted permission to enter.

Ensign Kalani Kane, Science

OOC: Whoops

“Come,” Came a half bellow. Teller always wondered what was just the right volume to yell through a star-fleet door. Too low and the sound proofing would prevent the noise from transmitting, too loud and it would seem that your were ill tempered....

The CSO office was unremarkable but it did seem lived in. There were a few indistinct photos on the walls and a clutter of incomplete paperwork on assorted PaDDS on the desk in front of the fairly young looking Chief Science Officer. His head was down as he continued to work on whatever project that was on his computer, before he picked up his head and looked at the ensign before him....

“Ensign....”

CSO

“Lieutenant,” Kalani said in a happy tone crossing the room towards his desk. She extended her hand once she reached the desk. Ensign Kalani ane ready for duty and ready to already beg, borrow, and steal for lab space,” she added the end silently to herself. She was a bit surprised to see her commanding officer was so young. The last three had been stodgy academic types who were riding out retirement and signed anything put in front of them. This Teller would be different but bad or good different was the question. Young minds tended to take riskier chances. Pushed the limits with new thoughts and perspectives. Older officers were more cautious unless this officer just received his commission. If that was the case he might be a bit more regulated since it was his first command. Kalani would just have to wait and see what type of guy he would be.

He glanced up and assessed the Ensign for a moment. He hated being shallow but she was pretty easy on the eyes. “Do you have your orders with you?” He reached out with a hand. He made a quick assessment, given the ensigns uniform age and the fact he never had seen her before lead him to the conclusion that she was reporting for duty to him.

“Ensign Kalani Kane. Biological division with my specialization in climatology and evolutionary biology,” she introduced herself handing over her PaDD. “My most recent assignment was on the USS. Ark Angel. I transferred here for a change of pace. The Mythology class was almost too big a ship for me. It was like a city within a few other cities,” she laughed.

“Six hundred Officers and Crew, it isn’t much of a step down.” He glanced at the information on the PaDD. “The Ark Angel is a good ship, good crew, there wouldn’t happen to be another reason why you wanted off?” Graham wasn’t emphatic, but something seemed off about the story. Not to mention jumping ships could be counterproductive to one’s career unless you switched ship due to a promotion.

“Drudoc is an amazing commanding officer. I was sad to leave her command but I have heard nothing but good things about Captain Knight. Life is all about change right. You either change or stagnate.” Kalani did believe what she had just told Teller, however, her words did feel somewhat hollow. He had the file. He obviously had read it but was looking for more than the excerpt in her file which read:

OOC: Didn’t really notice that part.

Based on a review of all information available, this disciplinary committee has decided that partially due to your negligence on shore leave, you are being demoted to Ensign effective October 12, 2017. This disciplinary action will remain active in your personnel file until (not to exceed 18 months). The demotion and any resulting reduction in pay remain in effect until you move to a position at a higher grade.

“I did not leave the Ark Angel for any other reason than I wanted a change of scenery. The crew and Drudoc were more supportive than I had any right to expect. The incident was officially an accident but there had to be some ramification over the events.” Kalani cleared her throat and looked at her hands for a second before turning her attention back to Teller waiting for him to speak.

Teller looked down at the PaDD for the moment and read the note quickly before he looked up. “I can’t say I don’t care about an incident that cost you a grade in rank. On the other hand, I’m all about what you do going forward.” He put down the PaDD with some firmness.

“Lets ignore that for a moment, what can I expect from you Kalani?”
