“I got a letter yesterday from Tokyo, and a souvenir. A walky-talky wind-up little China doll, that says ‘Wish you were here.’ I always liked that part.” He joined in the verse and moved to her. “How was your shopping?” he asked her, “did you find anything that you needed? or did you find things that needed you?” His own smirk was wide, because her go-to excuse for buying what he considered needless items was that they needed her like they had a life of their own.

“I wanted you to not change the codes on your quarters and I forgot my red pen,” Natasha said flopping down on the bed hard. The red pen was a joke that lasted for about ten years. Natasha would often go shopping and when she found an item she was not sure was exactly in the budget but had to have, she simply drew a red line through the tag and marked it down. In theory, this worked. Dante if he had ever really been interested would see that the 100 credit pair of shoes was only 50 credits due to her red pen. Dante, like most men, probably never cared but it did ease the buyer’s guilt Natasha occasionally felt when she spent a wad shopping and then gave him grief for Banging.

“And I did find a few homeless items that needed a good home,” she winked at him as she raised her legs up in a pose showing off her newest pair of heels. Due to his height, Natasha was able to sport heels as high as she could handle. This newest edition was a summery pair of light blue wedges with a peep toe.

He looked back at his bag and turned to her once more. ‘Well, this time I’m choosing the destination” he said to Nat. “I have leave, and that means you and I, are going on a vacation. I’ve already arranged it. After the last few months, and after our talk a couple of days ago, we need this. Just us Tasia.” He turned back to the bed and moved his bag out of the way, on the bed behind it, was hers. Already opened, and with a selection of Dante’s favorite, things, of Nats ready to be packed. “You are going to need those” he told her, “we have quite a lot planned for our vacation.”

Captain Knight, CO

Normally Natasha would have jumped up and down with utter excitement at the idea of shore leave; however, she had no idea that they had the time for such a luxury with Dante now as a Captain. The several hundred credits she just dropped in luxury girl toys made her sit up a bit straighter. Oh rice and crackers, she said to herself. Dante never cared about credits, until they went from black to red in their savings account. Natasha knew Dante always had a bit stashed away so she never worried even when he huffed and puffed at the odd occasion. This time, however, he was talking vacation and vacations were not cheap especially when they could not bumm off a rich friend’s beach house.

“Our vacation,” she said slowly. “Wow....um…wow,” Natasha smiled but it was a bit forced as her mind raced with the planning how to ditch Dante and return half the crap she never needed. At least that way they could make it off the transporter pad at thier destination.

Lt. Natasha Daye, medical

“What?” Dante asked her, a grin spreading across his face. “Don’t tell me you aren’t excited, and even if you have just been on a shopping spree” he said, sitting on the edge of the bed now and reaching out to take hold of her hand and draw her in to him, “I got this. Trust me.”

“Trusting you was never the issue. The bank trusting me....that’s another story” she said playfully as she let him draw her towards him. Moving between his legs, Daye traced the hair along his brow with the tips of her fingers looking at him. The face might have a few more wrinkles and a couple of scars but it was still the face she had been in love with for the past fifteen years. It was older and wiser but still the face she wanted to go to bed looking at and the one she wanted to open her eyes and see first thing in the morning. “Are you sure ou have the time? You are the skipper now and not the swashbuckling XO with the devil may are smile and a girl in one port,” she winked at him. Turning serious she sighed some. “I know things are rough but we are okay right? You are not doubting our decision to serve on the same ship and this vacation is a way to break it to me gently?”

“I want us to get away and spend some time together” he told her, “and I couldn’t pass up this opportunity when I saw it. I’m going to take you on an adventure holiday Tasia, the type you like. No sitting down for lunch, no watching the birds fly around over the beach, just action, things to do and see, places to be, just you and me.” He bit his lip slightly as he looked up at her, the glint of something fun in his eyes “And who knows” he said to her, “you might find out just how much you really love me.”

Captain Knight, CO

“Oh, baby that was never a question. I was the one that broke you up with the red-headed devil remember,” she leaned down to kiss him. “Loving you has always been the easy part.” Daye leaned down and kissed him She held back only because the idea of getting away from everything sounded perfect. If she let the kiss go in the direction she was dreaming about they would not only miss their shuttle but might lose the next eight hours to boot. “So sailor, when do we ship out,” she said resting her forehead on his after through a sheer force of will she ended the kiss.

Lt. Natasha Daye, medical

“You have one hour to pack” he told her, “So pack your bags, we’re going on an adventure.” Dante stood up and lightly brushed her lips with his again, just a tease as he took her by the shoulders and faced her towards her bag. “Take only what you need, if you’re a good girl I’ll let you go shopping. If your not, well, you’ll probably get to go shopping with a bigger smile and extra credits” he gave her a wink and then retreated quickly to the doorway before leaning on the frame so he could make his escape.

“Oh really where,” she said excitedly flopping back on the bed and toying with the handle on his bag. “In reality, she did not care if it was the guest quarters on the starbase. She and Dante needed some time to Natasha and Dante. They had spent too much time being Captain Knight and Lt. Daye or Captain Knight and his sexy live in as some of the crew deemed it. They were always better away from Starfleet and its rules and regulations. The simple things most couples took for granted like holding hands when walking or giving silly kisses was not acceptable when your street was a ship’s corridor or your door was the entrance to a public turbo. Maybe that was why they connected so well on a shore leave and liberty. They just had the chance to be themselves. “You know I am going to be crazy and annoying until you tell me where. I mean I have no idea what to pack.”

“I have a couple of final little things to arrange Nat” he said as he smiled at her happily, “One hour, and then we head to the dock.” Turning, he headed out into the living room of their quarters and glanced at Bruce, who was sitting, sulking really, quietly off to one side in his pen. “No, no you can’t come Bruce” Dante told the lizard, “Nat I need this time away, you’ll be fine, I promise, you’ll love where you are going. A Tropical getaway with an all you can eat buffet, just don’t touch the brightly colored frogs.”

Captain Knight, CO

If Bruce had ears they would have been dragging the floor. Uncharacteristically, his mouth opened enough to let the red ball fall from it and roll across the floor. Finding Natasha in the room, Bruce made a beeline for her. His dad may think he was staying but Bruce knew his mom would cave like rockslide with a few simple tricks that always worked. Yes, his fellow lizard brethren might shame him and steal his lizard card but it was a shore leave and a chance to find a way off the ship. For the past few weeks that had been Bruce’s sole purpose: to find the back door. To no avail was this purpose achieved....until today. Moving swiftly Bruce closed the distance between Dante and Natasha making it to the bed on which she was laying. Getting on the bed was hard. It was just about as tall as he was but Bruce had determination in spades. Moving to the area between the night table and bed, Bruce wedged himself into the crack and began to shimmy up. Three hundred and twenty million years had taught him and his ancestors a few things. One minute later a snout appeared on Dante’s pillow as Bruce pulled himself on the bed through a combination of sheer willpower and friction. Making his way over to Natasha, he laid his head on her chest staring up at her.

“Oh buddy, I wish I could take,” Nat said before Bruce reacted. Scurrying over to the bag he stuck his head in one of the straps and moved his tail back and forth rapidly. This was not a common lizard trick but he met a black and white collie once that showed him all sorts of tricks. The tail the Collie said was a deal sealer. Bruce had experimented with this and the Collie was correct. While annoying, Bruce had figured out a method to wiggling his butt so that his tail achieved a motion that made most humans say aww and wear the expression his mother was wearing now.

“Daaaaaaahnteeeeee. We can’t leave Bruce,” Nat said turning her face to look in his direction but moving her head to Bruce’s head. “God he is being so stinking cute. He so wants to go. Can we take him,” Natasha said sighing a bit? It was the sigh of defeatism only parents knew. It was the sigh of a mom finally crumbling to the pressure of her kids begging. “The poor guy has to be ship crazy,” Daye began.

Bruce, if he could smile outwardly, would have been wearing the ‘oh yeah take that. I got mom on my side and you are going down’ smile all while still appearing innocent and hurt at the revelation they were being excluded from something. Humans were so easy to predict. Maybe in another three hundred and twenty million years, the humans could be as complex as the reptiles but Bruce was not laying any money on that.

Lt. Natasha Daye and Bruce

“What? No, Bruce can’t exactly come” Dante said, although he himself was smiling as he reached over and scratched the large reptile behind the ears. “Bruce we haven’t got room for you on the shuttle, and I’ve already arranged for somewhere for you to stay.”

One of the downsides to having a large lizard waggling his butt was that he tended to slide all over the place, and Bruce wasn’t really too concerned with where exactly his tail was swinging. Sliding slowly towards the edge of the bed on Dante’s side, he pushed the big creature more into the middle and then put his hand on his tail to stop the motion.

“We leave soon Nat” he told her, “I know Bruce would love to come but not this time, I promise we can take him on an away team the next suitable planet we meet, okey big guy?” he said as he leaned over and looked in the lizards eye. “Pinky promise okey.”

Captain Knight, CO

You know my pinky doesn’t bend exactly like that you heathen, Bruce said as his expression remained neutral. Only the occasional flicker of his tongue changed his expression as he and Dante talked.

In the shuttle.......

Daye sat with her feet propped up on the console as Dante flew the ship reading her galactic social media holozine. “Huh,” she said as she finished reading the article.

“Turns out that rich billionare Aedan Teller is trying to buy Outpost 42. Rumor has it he wants to own the station. Do you think that is even possible,” Natasha posed the question in a rhetorical manner. She knew it was not possible yet with civilians this obvious was not exactly what you might expect.

“Shuttle Gerault you are clear for landing,” a voice said through the comm line ending the empty chatter Daye had been filling the room with.

Daye immediately put down her holozine and leaned forward taking in the view. She had no idea where Dante was taking her until this moment. The view made her sign happily. The surface was covered with archipelago style islands. The planet had the feel of one large beach which was right up Nat’s alley.
