The night shift, that normally dull shift that covered the late evening to early morning hours. Usually reserved for junior officers and crewmen on their first tour. Used as means of gaining valuable experience on ship operations during a time when less is likely to happen. Young officers sometimes had trouble staying awake at times, especially if they were on one of the few rotating shifts, or had to work another shift. The Saracen was out, going no particular direction while they awaited further orders.

Master Chief Gordon liked working the night shift. It allowed him to catch up on work and to help teach and guide the young crewmen and officers. He enjoyed Mentoring the young officers. He felt, especially since he was on his last tour of his career, that he needed to help pass on his knowledge and experience to the upcoming officers. He took pride in this, as it was his last duty to star fleet before retirement.

It was 0300 hours in the morning, Gordon had spent the last hour reviewing security information and crewmen evaluations. While tedious, it was necessary work and he enjoyed doing it. The bridge’s lights were at 80% of normal, the mood on the bridge was sleepy but focused. A beep at the tactical station brought everyone out of their midnight daze.

“Master Chief, A vessel just entered sensor range, it appears to be a light freighter. It’s stationary Master Chief.” A young NE reported from Tactical.

“Any life signs?” Gordon asked, putting down the padd in the empty first officers chair.

“I can’t tell at this distance sir.” She said, with a hint of nervousness.

“That’s alright Ensign, helm, set a course, full Impulse.”

“Aye sir, ETA, 49 Min to intercept.”

-CMDCM

30 min later, as the Saracen got closer to the freighter, scanners began to pick up more information.

“Master Chief, I am picking up two lifesigns on the freighter. They appear to be in good health.” The NE at tactical reported.

“On screen.” Gordon ordered, standing up to get a better look at ship. “What is their status?” he asked, turning to look at the NE.

OCC: A thought I had, if anyone wants to participate in this, we can all GM it together. Add something to the story for others to react and add too.

-CMDCM

“I don’t recognize the ship design Master Chief. However, I am picking up some damage to their engines. However, the hull is scattering some of our scans so I can’t get any more detailed then that.” The NE reported.

“Hail them.” Gordon ordered and took a couple steps towards the view screen.

“Sir, should we wake the captain?” the NE asked curiously.

“Not yet, let’s find out what we are dealing with first.”

-CMDCM

The Chief Operations Officer stepped onto the Bridge, yawning widely. His jaws stretched open widely, showing off the sharp teeth in his mouth. His tongue flicked up to wipe his eye, then he sat down at his station. “eev’nin” he muttered, looking through the viewscreen at the strange ship. “Well, what’s going on out there?” he wondered aloud, looking to the other officers present. The yellow stripes running up his nose and over his head reflected the lights of the room much better than the black scales that consisted of the rest of his coloration. He would often jokingly call those yellow bands “racing stripes.”

Gordon turned around when the COO entered the bridge. “Good Morning Sir, We have what looks like a stranded ship here. We are looking into it.” Gordon reported. “Our scans are unable to fully penetrate their hull. We are attempting to hail them. Would you like to take the Conn?” He asked, the COO outranked him in seniority and etiquette dictated that he at least offer.

-CMDCM

“As you were, Crewman,” Gavain said with a small nod, stepping over to the operations station and relieving the NE stationed there. “Go take a rest, Jin,” he said, putting his hand on the Bajoran officer’s shoulder for a moment. The young woman nodded, looking quite tired. “Looks like I’m going to have to give NE Patters another talking to about showing up on time… or at all,” he shook his head slightly. It wasn’t really a natural emote for him, but it seemed to help the humanoids better understand him, so he had gotten used to such a gesture. He sat at his station. “Could you fill me in on all the details thus far, besides the fact that there’s a stranded ship? Are we close enough to scan for life or automated beacons?”

Gavain

“We are picking up two life signs, but beyond that, our scanners are not able to read much. Their hull seems to be scattering some of our scans.” Gordon reported to the COO. He turned to tactical.

“Have they responded to our hail?” He asked the NE.

“Yes and no sir. They have acknowledged receipt of it, but are refusing to respond.” the NE reported.

“Interesting.” Gordon said, he turned back to the viewscreen. “Ok, Let’s give them a few minutes to figure out how to respond then.”

-CMDCM

“Is the vessel of known origin?” Gavain asked, scratching his snout for a moment. A few scales flaked off, and he looked at his hand for a moment. Was it shedding time already? He sighed silently and closed his eyes for a moment. He hated shedding season.

Gavain

The ship on the view screen looked like a miniature version of an early 23rd century federation freighter. Scans of the hull were being mostly reflected. The sensors were able to read life form readings, but nothing more specific then that. One of the 4 nacelles was venting what appeared to be drive plasma. Visually there were what appeared to be scorch marks on the hull.

“No Lieutenant. We don’t know much about them at this point.” Gordon turned to tactical. “Any response from our hails?”

-CMDCM

“No sir” the NE at tactical responded.

“Hmm, Lieutenant, do you think you can scan through their hull?” Gordon asked Gavain.

-CMDCM

“I can certainly try,” Gavain said with a small nod, stepping over to a different station and trying out the ship’s sensors to see if any of them could pierce the hull of the strange vessel.

Gavain.
